c'est quoi ca?
Albeit about 9 years ago, Pulp were headlining...
Tips? Watch out for the Jersey kids, they'll steal your watch.
Oh and spend some time in St Malo, it's very pretty.
Leave 'em Jersey kids alone.
I have been several times.
What do you want to know? I can tell you it is the highlight of my festival summer, but alas I haven't been for one reason or another last year, and I can't go this year either.
The best thing? It's in a fucking french fort. The worst thing? They've got these ridiculous policies like
a) you can't buy anything with money, you have to buy tokens, and you use the tokens to buy things - this it to reduce the queues at the bars / eateries etc, but alas the huge queues are at the token place.
b) no cameras.
c) Once you're in the arena, they stamp your ticket, and you can't re-enter if you leave (i know, ridiculous).
But I've always had a great time there, discovered loads of cool bands, seen some amazing acts (Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth, !!!, and TV on the Radio spring to mind).
Questions, set them forth. Where are you travelling from? The UK?
seems to be the case for most European festivals.
Fair enough. It is a good policy, once you *have* the tokens. It's just that obtaining the tokens has been poorly excuted in my experience of RdR.
to get my jacket, and they wouldn't let me back in, wristband or no wristband.
that's all i have to say about this festival.
St.Malo is lovely though.
i'm so pleased you rate it as i know next to nothing about it.
there are 8 of us driving to portsmouth then getting an overnight sleeper ferry to st malo. we have organised camping for 3 nights close by i think.
i literally know nothing else.
is camping ok?
how far away are the different venues?
is it literally 1 band after another or are there clashes?
how can i guarantee the best time ever?
there's only one stage. the other things are actually in town (ie a bus/car ride away), but they're during the day, and the best stuff is on at night in the fort (well, is was last year)
sort of stuff did you get up to in the day?
any good places to eat?
we've got a car so can venture. can we drive from the town to the fort and leave it there overnight??
you have to get a taxi or the overly-subscribed shuttle bus to the town (30mins? can't remember now).
the main arena is just one stage at the fort.
routine for the day then?
gig in town
when did you go to the fort?
something like that. We worked around the bands. Drove to the supermarket on day 1 to stock up on food/beers, then depending on who was on where/weather went to beach and sat around the beach cafe (drinking from a crate under the table - nay beer on the beach), then came back in on the bus. It's quite a trek between the two tho, maybe 30-45mins?
parking'll be fine as it's tiny, there's only about 5-10000 people or something (and most of them are English)
...the premium ticket. it was only about 20EUR more last year, but you got a tshirt, a CD and unlimited trips to/from the site. Especially good for popping back to grab an ultra cheap beer from the tent, and drinking it on the way back to the arena. Go to the beach - it's gorgeous and has a high diving board. It's a brilliant little festival, small and last year had flushing toilets (!) that were cleaned EVERY day (!!) oh, and get there early if you;re camping cos the comfy spots go quickly, and the camping field is like ploughed lead. vive la route du rock! (or something)
basicially, there's two or three bands on the beach in St Malo, then another couple in a casino just outside the city walls, then all the bands in the fort. There's free shuttle buses, which are always busy and always late. There's always taxis, I guess.
During the day, we all used to go hang out in St Malo. It's a lovely place, pretty touristy, but very picturesque all the same. There's also the hypermarche which the bus stops at on the way back from st malo. I can assure you you can get lost in there.
Another tip would be to buy breakfast in the little village nearby the campsite. There's a small bar along the main street on the left (not the first one you come to, but the second one) which does a cracking little breakfast for v cheap. And the toilet's free, too ;)
Have a blast - I'm actually really gutted I can't go this year, mostly because I will have moved to the UK to start a new job that weekend (I live in Jersey), but also cuz all my friends are also in jobs that tie them down. And the line-up looks cool too.
Places to go see = St Malo, Dinard, Dinan, if you really fancy a long drive, go to see Mont St Michel.
Though, to be fair, if you're anything like me you'll probably be spending most of of your day sleeping on the beach since the bands don't finish til 4am.
away is the fort from the town? are there any campsites nearer the fort? i think we are meant to be camping in the town. is this a bad shout?
is in the same place, which is close to the Arena and close to a small town, ie 2 bars and little else. The bug town St Malo is further away but thats what buses, taxis or if your lucky enough to have a car are for.
The diving board in St Malo is fucking terrifying.
This is the most enjoyable festival in my calender, this year will be my 7th consecutive RDR which goes to show how good it is. The atmosphere is like nothing else.
Plus I love St Malo and Moules Frites.
It will be strange flying to France this year rather than getting a boat though.
Literally can't wait.
