is, after a few listens, on the verge of becoming an absolute classic
I like how he suddenly jumps so far out of his vocal range. I think the walkmen will always be cursed by the rat, such a perfect song nothing can live up to it
have a real bash at their back catalogue.
You are right though. It is a shame that people by and large only seem to know them by this and, more criminally, think The Rat is the only notable thing they've done!
Still, I'm quite glad in a selfish way that they remain a low-key outfit and a well kept secret; and not everybody's favourite band.
This a fucking great song.
<3 everything they've done. And the new album is brilliant!
What are they like live?
because I'll sound like some groupie or something.
But a friend of mine and i did a year abroad in NY for our degree and we saw them at the Bowery Ballroom and they were really, really good! They were simultaneously really tight and a bit shambolic - they really captured the barroom feel of the records, and his voice was great live.
They played about 6 new songs in a row from opener onwards and the crowd were totally on it.
Then by the end of the gig they were throwing out classics like candy; The Rat, Bows + Arrows, Rue The Day, Thinking Of A Dream I Had, Little House Of Savages and they did a second encore of We've Been Had. Amazing stuff.
But.. ironically, we saw them in the bar afterwards and they were the most miserable group of blokes you could hope to meet.
Anyway, I hope they tour the UK soon.
I got really carried away
and like them both, but the rat is just in a different league, I actually think it is possible they might have had more success with out it because those who get the album expecting more of the same wont have got it, and its success may have put off fickle ultra indie types, an underated band forsure
My favourite of theirs is their debut, but I can understand why The Rat is their calling card- it's a force of nature, one of the most furious songs I've ever heard.
