LAST.FM
So, it's just after 12, it's Sunday, post your most listened tracks of the past seven days. This should keep the purists and the progressives happy.
1) Descendents 102
2) The Clean 85
3) Harvey Milk 52
4) Death Cab for Cutie 41
5) The Hold Steady 21
6) Howlin Rain 16
7) Chrome 14
8) Wu-Tang Clan 12
8) Lightning Bolt 12
10) Dead Prez 11
1) Milo Goes To College is so many kinds of awesome that it hurts.
3) The new album. Shitting awesome, probably contender for album of the year. Death Goes To The Winner is absolutely, completely massive.
4) The Pearl Jam replacement this week. I revisited Transatlanticism. It's not as good as I remembered, but I'm not AN INDIE anymore really.
5) Fuck me, how did I think these guys were boring? I decided to listen Boys And Girls In America last night and this morning, after downloading it on emusic. I'm a stupid idiot, who is choking on his own words now. They're so fun!
6) I like the S/T better than Magnificent Fiend. Sweet band though as you'd expect from a Sunburned Hand of The Man/Comets on Fire combo.
7) Anthology is great, even if a little hard listening at time. All their riffs sound backwards or something. Thanks Tristan and JGJug and Mug x3.
NOW YOU.

Hey hey hey
this is the week I discovered I actually LOVE indie pop and "indie" a lot more than I thought I did, having attended the last ever NPL on friday my mind has totally been changed.
I really like belle and sebastian now, a long time "dislike" band for me.
Any recommendations for more stuff like that or related to c86 or whatever would be much appreciated. I like wordy stuff like the smiths and B+S but also punkier stuff

Also, you loved The Smiths longtime. That's as indie pop as it gets.
SELL OUT
national pop league
itsa indie pop club in glasgow
aren't you going to rip on me for Death Cab For Emos
And changing my mind about The Hold Steady
I was braced for a slew of insults.
we live in savage times
i mighta done i have to fill out some forms today though so i got distracted :(
not any more it's not
I only went once before but it was the last ever on friday and it was brilliant. I really feel like i've missed something.
And seeing poptimusgrime headbang to freak scene was something special.
poptimus sounds like a man after my own heart
both of you are coming down to my 21st/Zonino yes?
man hopefully
it'll be about february or something right? I'll be at uni but will hopefully have a job by then so I can get the train or something. Mint.
January!
24th Zonino, 25th is my 21st, but I'm probably going to do something on the 23rd. Or maybe the week after. It'll be hectic.
suddenly that Camera Obscura track makes a lot more sense...
In terms of indie, or C86ish jangle, perhaps check out Felt
particularly "Forever Breathes the Lonely Word". Dylan-esque vocals (actually a it sounds very like Blonde on Blonde musically too) with some top-quality jangle and hammond organ.
*jangle
Ah yeah thanks
my friend keeps banging on about them and i've heard great things. Will investigate.
the worst thing about the new last.fm:
no more will we have the joy of sitting refreshing for hours on a sunday, waiting for the charts to update in hope of being The Chosen One who gets to make the last.fm thread. sad days.
since friday:

NY wit Crazy Horse should really be top because the songs are longer.
4a) Have to agree with LBC. "Death..." is probably my favourite track of the year. It's ludicrous.
4b) Sleeping With The Enemy mainly. Angry angry early 90s hiphop produced by DJ Shadow. 'Bush Killa' is my track of the week.
9) I got Supersilent 6 from emusic this week. I like it, but I know it's going to take loads of listens to fully appreciate it. Improvised experimental Norwegian jazz FTW.
I listened to Chrome walking into town today. Combined with a slight hangover and the heat, it really wasn't helping...
IIIIIIII!!!! AM ALIIIIIIVE!!!!! AND IT'S GOOD TO BE CAUSE LIFE IS THE BEST GAME IN TOWN AND DEATH GO
You just can't stop the headbanging and rock god posing at that point.
I also love how Barnburner sounds like a ZZ Top playing a hoedown.
The liner notes are funny
"I wrote this turd"
"Creston hates this one"
"Best jam since 'Old Glory'"
Heh
I bet Sic Alps would be good for the hangover/too much sun combo.
Third the 'Death Goes To The Winner'
thing too. The 'when I think of all the little moments in my life I have despiiiiiiiiiiised' bit is the best.
This is too early man
It just feels wrong. It feels wrong!

Er
i'd never watched that Eric B & Rakim video before. Shades of Windowlicker?
I love that song
The sax is brilliant.
Is any of the RZA stuff worth getting?
I like that Bad Trips youtube.
That was just the Ghost Dog instrumental soundtrack
which is nice, but I know not about the rest.
Gas Huffer?!
I've got a split they did with Mudhoney. Are they still going or was it their old stuff?
I'm not sure
if they are still going, but this was the first couple of singles I found on a blog on a while ago. They are really good. I borrowed a later album a while ago and it wasn't too hot. Nice painting of a cat on the front though.
Or not
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Just_beautiful_music_album_cover.jpg
I know that cat!
I've got a weird painting someone did of my and my sister when we were kids. I'll get a photo of it up later...
Sweet!
Please do!
I've got it!
Check my profile picture...
Whoa
Last.fm chart thread thing discovery of the week! Your cat seems shocked someone is painting a portrait that crazy.
It's insane isn't it?
She wasn't very good at hands either.
I see where the new Melvins album cover came from now...
Have you got a hard copy
They got the dog photos from photos.com! I was hoping that was Jared Warren's dog or something :(
Apparently King Buzzo's wife (He has a wife?!) designed the cover art
Yip
She's done basically all of em since Stoner Witch. She laid out the Neither Here Nor There book too which is a mightily impressive thing.
I saw
this film http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0775529/ the other day and realised how Sun City Girls got their name. Can't believe I didn't know before.
Heh
If they were from England it would've been Lytham St Annes Girls.

yes
it was. bought it yesterday when i found it cheap in town. i'm enjoying it a lot. 1st destroyer i've heard. what should i get next?
I'd sat TiD is similar in sound to Streethawk or Your Blues.
I really like Destroyer's Rubies, it's got a more dramatic, over the top feel. I don't really think you can go wrong with any of his albums though.
Nope, it won't.
:D
agreed
im waiting for it to update.
Pretty soon
They'll be enough of the snapshot army to creat a new lastfm thread
but that thread will be pathetic.
It won't, judging by who's posted in the last two weeks' threads, have any of the core important members of LAST EFF EM THREADZ.

10 Pyramids 19
10 - anyone thinking of buying the Pyramids album please be warned that this is not easy listening. If you like the idea of disembowelling a Radiohead record (to quote P4k) then this may be for you. In 'Hilary' Pyramids take a theme, itself sounding like sound coming out of an underground road tunnel, and subject it to a brutal assault of percussion; eventually dissolving down a throaty gargle of noise. 'The Echo of Something Lovely' (and the two remixes) is hauntingly beautiful, best heard in the context of the album.
I'd love to disembowel Radiohead
I'm sold on that album.
i really like that album,
but I think MD oversold the malevolence in his review. There's definitely a lot going on, but I don't get that from it at all.

Top bloke/band!
Did you see there's a Yoshitomo Nara exhibition at the Baltic in Newcastle? I went yesterday, it was ace! All the art was spread around these little houses he'd made in collaboration with some other guys. I would definitely go if you haven't already.
I really hope Patton picks Phantomsmasher to play at ATP
I only have a couple of tracks off the 2002 release, but they are completely brilliant.
That would be really cool
I don't know how he would do it though, with the instruments all cut up to buggery as they are. I'm sure there's a way.
...
damn, I completely forgot about that. I would definetly go if I drove, pity given how fantastic Nara is.

Great chart as well- what Kyuss was it?
Unfortunately not :(
I'm being starved of the NOU! Ah it was "...And the Circus Leaves Town". Apparently it wasn't that well-received when it came out, which is bullshit really because its ace!
Yeah I'll be around all next week, so we can do this v.important exchange! I'm quite excited about the Harvey Milk album after your glowing praise, I'm gonna have to get on that.

1) Never really paid them much attention before, but have been listening to the new album since watching them at Latitude and have got quite into it.
4) I really like the album, sounds like a cross between The Ravonettes and Velvet Underground.
The Breeders
are really cool, maybe try the album 'Pod' next. There is a lot of space in their music - if a song doesn't need any guitar for a bit they'll just stop playing it. I think that makes the songs even better.
Yeah Pod
is one of my all-time favourite albums. Its pretty breathy and sheckshee and the cover of Happiness is A Warm Gun is pretty brutal (in a good way).
And I
really like the space too. Kim Deal seems to be really certain about the sound shes going for. She talks pretty derisively in that documentary about the Breeders about people and bands that unnecessarily fill. I like that.
Yeah!
Although Title TK wasn't all good the first track on it is my favourite example of that sort of thing. Perfick.

sic alps are still awesome, i like akron family theyre a lotta fun, i caved in and listened to the vivian girls this week theyre pretty cool i am less sold on gentleman jesse though, im still enjoying this flying nun trip
Hay Dukebox
I got the (vxpxc) cd from the local shop. This one, do you have it?
http://www.normanrecords.com/records/94585
It's really good. I haven't got into the last track which has accordion and weird singing yet, but the rest is gold! Props.
Do you ever go to Glasgow to visit the Volcanic Tongue shop?
I don't like acorn/family, they were like a bunch of hippies live.
no i dont have that
the ones i have are called hotel chelsea days, of indeterminate age and devoid of karma there are two more i forget the name of as well, all are great though, i have not heard anything theyve done with an accordian though, sounds promising, is that the (vxpxc) thing the have there i saw they had something
i havent been to volcanic tongue for a while, i remember they usedt o stock loadsa noise casettes and wolf eyes collaborations and stuff i didnt know but i looked again at the catalogue recently and discovered they seem to be into 'shitgaze' as well now and i recognised most of the stuff so i may go again, i want to pick up the new pumice album sometime
vxpxc thing they have in volcanic tongue that is
Looks like it is there
judging by the website, i've never actually been in real life. There is also a C14 cassette for £6, I think the money might stop me spending loads of money in there. I would get the Les Rallizes Denudes cdrs they get in sometimes if they didn't charge £80 for em.
yeah ive not been very often
that said its nice homely operation the whole thing, it possibly is just in the owners front room, you can kinda understand the pricing better when your in the shop
i remember looking round once and being quite struck by just how many wolf eyes related records there are in the world
Can never have enough
Wolf Eyes related tapes. Never.
im told theres some aaron dilloway emeralds collaboration thats rly good
sic alps are basically the greatest band huh
jorge ben wrote a song about zico
he's basically the coolest guy
Oh yeah?
I'm tempted to make an impulse buy and order it now. Only $12 ppd! Emeralds have way too many releases to keep track of. I downloaded this 'Emeralds Box' will all OOP stuff but they've released about 20 different things since.
Sic Alps really are the greatest. 'Description of the Harbor' is astonishingly good.
Sic Alps are...
...being supported by Factums in Belgium. I really hope that Factums support them here, but it doesn't look good :(
man theyre gonna be touring
awesome, i did not know this :D
i listened to that tough shits thing you sent me, quite cool, i dunno im not convinced i could listen to a lot of it though, they looked great though
yeah!
They're playing a free show in Haarlem. I just noticed that they're in Brussels with Factums though, it would be amazing if they head this way too.
They're bound to come to Glasgow
gigs actually happen there!

1 - Variations on Swing is fucking brilliant.
2 - Stupid song titles aside, HHLL are pretty good and actually sound like they're having the most fun ever, so kudos. Plus, their Black Flag cover is nice.
4 - Noisy hardcore/metal band.
5 - Some of the bleakest, grittiest hardcore punk I have ever heard.
7 - A bit shit.

Big recommendation for Silver Summits; on Drag City's new offshoot label, really good psych folk produced by a dude from Espers. Apparently their guitarist was taught by John Fahey too.

1: kickball are still by biggest concern at the moment. dude's voice is heartbreaking even when he's not meaning to be.
2: 'cath...' is really really good.
3: a drunk decemberists with album-dividing guitar solo and good hooks.
4: dilla ghost doom isn't as good as it should be
5: people been flossing about frightened rabbit on these boards, thought i'd have a peep. they're alright. i want to say they're like a scotch elliott smith, but they're more like an acoustic biffy clyro. not sure where i am with them at the moment.
and: 'kiss me' by sixpence none the richer is a beautiful song. i can't cope with more than thirty seconds of any of their other songs though. they remind me of that whole 'strong, independent woman' shit from the mid-nineties.
and: fleet foxes getting played loads on radio one is LOL. music moves pretty fast nowadays.
