Obviously with Daydream Nation
But from then on in what are some other of their great albums?
To get more noisy, EVOL.
For something in between, Sister.
the shitty pop grunge phase that like least get Goo or Dirty.
my favourites are Sonic Nurse, EVOL, Sister, Washing Machine, A Thousand Leaves and Murray Street.
and it comes after daydream nation chronologically
if you want pop tunes with noise grafted on: goo
if you want more drawn-out songs with plenty of jamming: murray street
you get pretty much their full range with that four i think.
of course pretty much all their LPs are worth having.
and.. yes. even in the SY canon it's a strange one. the guitars are in standard tuning throughout and the drums are all... really... funky.
it's worth a listen though, especially if you get the recent reissue w/ all the bonus live tracks - those are awesome. it also has (i think) the only lee/kim duet!
Thurston sounds so different, he sounds like the bloke from the rapture.
that, confusion is sex and nyc ghosts are v hard work
everything else they've done is easy enough to get into
but Confusion is easily in my top 3 sonic LPs. i just love how discordant and evil it sounds, unlike anything else in their discog. there's an old steve albini quote saying that they pretty much defined the sonic youth 'sound' somewhere between EVOL and sister and i think it rings true.
plus, if you buy the DGC reissue you get Kill Yr Idols!
KILL YR IDOLS! SONIC DEATH! IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD! AND CONFUSION IS NEXT!
i love sonic youth so much <3
sonic youth are my favourite band, and i wouldnt say any album is bad, but for a newcomer, Confusion is Sex would be a head blag.
the run of Bad Moon Rising, EVOL, Sister and Daydream Nation is unbelievable.
especially when you consider they released them all in FOUR YEARS. how did they do it?
and a tool box full of screwdrivers
they mostly stayed away from drugs.
is easily my favourite song from that album (it's on my copy of the album anyway). That, and EVOL's Death To Our Friends, perfect malevolent mood music.
Back to that first album, I'm so intrigued by the idea of funky drumming on something I'm expecting to sound like Glenn Branca trying to mate with DNA.... I would take a sneaky listen but MY ISP IS WATCHING :'( ?
with an electric drill going through a wah pedal over disco drumming.
pretty much sums up that record.
on 'No Queen Blues' off of Washing Machine to achieve that riff?
but in Our Band Could Be Your Life it said they used a drill through a wah pedal for a track on the first record, and when the drill broke they had to drop the song because they never found a drill with a similar tone :(
about 2/3 of the way through
it was the only record they made with Richard Edson on drums. he later quit the band to concentrate on his prog funk band. WINNER.
their most recent album, is actually one of their best in my opinion, as well as being probably their most accessible, immediate album. they're my favourite band of all time. i'd go in this order with their albums:
a thousand leaves
bad moon rising
and then the rest..
post something incredibly witty, but now I don't need to.
a thousand leaves
experimental jet set trash and no star
Confusion is Sex
That should give you an outline of all their 'phases'
It's thought of as their pop album. But Murray Street and the ones following are the ones that made me love them like Pringles.
I got Goodbye 20th Century for my birthday yesterday. Am bloody excited about reading that bad boy.
