I've heard good things - is Rook worth getting? How about their earlier stuff?
Okkervil River are probably better, but Shearwaters Rook is a beautiful album. and they're playing in london soon woop!
You can hear Will Sheff's influence (in fact he does lead vocals on a few of the tracks) but is kinda gentler than a lot of Okkervil stuff. From what I can make out Sheff had very little to do with Palo Santo and Meiburg is the main songwriter. It's more experimental than Winged Life with less traditional song structures. Even reminds my of Spirit of Eden/Laughing Stock era Talk Talk in places. Haven't heard Rook yet.
However, Palo Santo is still marginally better imo.
in fact better then any Okkervil River output also
in Manchester 16/09 if anyone's interested
Mainly because The Stage Names was crap and they sucked live. Rook is good, and so is Palo Santo, but I think the double whammy of Wingled Life and the Thieves EP in 2005 are there best moments, especially A Makeover and A Hush, the latter of which is the best song to come from either camp by a country mile and a half.
regarding Winged Life. A Makeover is a gorgeous tune, the whole album is incredible, one of my top 3. I didn't mind the Stage Names though, and thought Okkervil were really good when I saw them live. Shearwater wins though.
in Leeds last year they were awesome. I already have tickets for Manchester.
Winged Life is a great record but the songwriting skills of both Meiburg & Sheff have matured considerably since then.
And in response to "The Stage Names was crap" - don't be so ridiculous. I think the problem with some people is that they expected Okkervil to surpass the masterpiece that is BSB.
Although I like Black Sheep Boy, I don't think it's their best, nor was I wasn't expecting Black Sheep Boy 2. I just think it's quite bland and didn't hold up to repeat listens as much I as I was hoping it would.
