There, I said it.
but so much more because of the lyrics than the music.
The six people on here who love him? Does anyone else in the world even talk about him/them?
I've got two Mountain Goats albums. They're pretty good.
so they're bigger than The Thermals. THINK ABOUT IT, BAMOS.
what kinda stuff have you been listening to by him, im not so much into the full band stuff myself...
The Thermals are so good.
so feel privileged.
no. no. no.
this is actually unforgivable.
There is NO Zapsta to me anymore.
' the most remarkable thing,
about you, standing in the doorway,
is that it's you,
and you are standing in the doorway.'
How utterly wrong you are.
was about to get ninja...
But it is just so categorically wrong I really can't be bothered..
What Mountain Goats stuff have you listened to that makes you think this, out of interest?
And Tallahassee. And Zopilote Machine. And The Coroner's Gambit. Yeah.
Or you would if you weren't DEAD TO ME.
Its easily their most accessible, and least lo fi. It seems unlikely you'll change your opinion based on it but, you know, worth a try...
And I suppose its all subjective really but looking at your profile you seem to like quite a few similar types of bands/artists etc, so it seems odd to me that you'd feel this way, particularly with NMH amomg your favourites...
Its all about the imagery and lyrics and as such I personally think its okay if the melody etc comes second when they're quite as good as this. To be fair, asides from Tallahassee, you've only listened to his lo fi stuff so try some later stuff, see how it goes...
It all sounds the same.
and when you are a brilliant lyricist all you need are adequate chord progression to make brilliant songs. But I would agree as a musician he is not that special but that doesnt matter.
apart from the "that doesn't matter". And the "all you need" bit. So not all of it. But I agree with your assessment of his talents.
there is nothing special musically going on underneath, I dont think it matters for the type of folky music he plays.
and he turns incredibly simple chord progressions and strumming patterns into awesome, impactful songs. Ergo, he's a great songwriter.
agree with this here OceanStorm.
And personally I'm a "lyrics>>>music" person, so I obviously think he's a genius.
for about 6 months now.
I cannot think of any thread title I have disagreed with more than this.
Intelligent lyrics that tell stories and have beautiful quirky humour. The best line in imagery of any songwriter I can think of. All set to either stripped down acoustic backing or a rich full sound. What's not to love?
their union chapel show last year one of my favourite shows ever
people liking him doesn't mean he's overrated. just means you don't like him as much.
^^^^^^ look how much ^^^^^^
People saying stuff like this used to get me rilled up; but i struggle to care anymore. Ok, great, you don't like. You're loss. Yawn.
People are saying why they like him, and you're shooting them down and telling people to not bothering listening to them. Nice.
I'm saying why I *don't* like him and saying why I think he's overrated. Why's that any less valid than making comments in the positive? I think everyone who's posted in this thread is pretty familiar with his/their work anyway, so telling them not to bother would be somewhat futile.
It's pretty much the least harsh negative thing you can say about someone! Especially someone as highly rated as he is. I don't think he's shit; I think he gets an undue amount of acclaim. I agree that he's a great storyteller, but there's a massive leap from storyteller to songwriter.
is that he's an incredible performer. he totally nails it on his records almost every single time.
