Anyone go off here? What did people think of Neil Young?
Thought Neil Young was one of the greatest shows I've ever seen. Didn't know quite a few songs of it, but he was just really going for it, loved Out of the blue and when the whole of the festival singing along to Heart Of Gold. And coming back on with A day in the life as an encore was genius. could have done with cutting down that last guitar solo though.
Loads of great bands and shows on as well: REM, Radiohead, Justice, Raconteurs, Gnarls Barkley, Vampire Weekend, The National, Jay-Z, MGMT, ...
Crowd was pretty good as well, especially in the tent. Didn't have the wankers you often have back here and had a good number of people dancing.
If there is a festival as good as that over here I've yet to see it. Loads of brits over there this time, probably about 1/5 - 1/4 of the people there. Hardly any went when I last was there in 2004.
had a fantastic time
Neil Young was amazing!
The line-up was brilliant, saw so many great bands
What most impressed me, however, was the free loo roll + soap dispensers + how often the toilets were cleaned!
Things like having loads of taps (so you don't have to wait for everyone to have a wash in the morning), clean loos, loads of buses to and from the site and free public transport around the country makes the weekend a lot better. Puts the big uk festivals to shame with the level of organisation.
It was my first time at Werchter & I'd only heard about it through a Radiohead forum a couple of months ago, but I'm highly recommending it to all my friends for next year.
The festival itself was superbly organised: transport to & from the site was very easy; there were ample, clean toilet facilities for the mass of festival goers; and when I used the medical tent, I was treated very well.
As for the line up, the UK festivals just can't compete with it this year: REM, Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Beck, The Verve, Kings of Leon, The Raconteurs, Chemical Brothers, Moby, Kaiser Chiefs, The Kooks, Jay-Z - all of these could easily headline at V, Glastonbury or Reading/Leeds, yet we got to see them all at one festival, amazing.
The atmosphere in the Pyramid Marquee was excellent; Vampire Weekend were one of the highlights, as were Soulwax and Justice, both did great sets to a raptuous crowd (chanting "Ayyyyyy Ayyyyy" much to many Brits' annoyance!). On the whole, a great weekend and acts I wasn't too fussed about seeing were amongst my favourites (Jay-Z, Ben Folds, Moby). I was slightly disappointed at the seeming lack of atmosphere in the crowd during Radiohead, but perhaps that's because we were packed like sardines in the front pit. MGMT were a little average, as were The National (not much to get the crowd going) I think the hypemachine has gone into overdrive with them both.
On a scale of 1-10, Rock Werchter went to 11; I'm just stumped as to how they'll match this year's bill in 2009...
to be honest, i think werchter was pretty poorly organised. No camping on wednesday leaves lots of people asleep in a train station, and then the queuing was ridiculous. We had to wait two hours for the campsite to open, to discover that because seetickets cant be arsed to deliver things after a £9 booking fee, we had to queue/wait another hour and a half for the box office to open before we could even get onto our campsite.
then the queue to get into the arena on thursday was a bit silly. We missed half of Vampire Weekend...
And the fact theres nothing to drink other than Stella (or that really prime cherry beer) was a bit shit too.
Putting all that aside, it was like the best 4 days of music ever. REM, The National, The Chemical Bros, Radiohead, Justice and Beck were pretty sweet but Sigur Ros was absolutely unbelievable.
Also jesus The Verve sucked. Woaw woaw woaw.
and kudos to clean toilets (with Toilet Roll most of the time!)
