I have decided to buy a beck album but dont really know much about him, which is best and has the most classic hits?
bright eyes and pixies.
ost of the hits are on doolittle but surfer rosa is better i think
With Beck you probably want to start with Odelay as it sort of sums up the whole Beck experience pretty well and is easily his best album. And then I'd maybe go with the mellower side of him with Sea Change
With Bright Eyes his best in my opinion (and my favourite album of all time) is I'm Wide Awake Its Morning, although Lifted is arguably a slightly mor cohesive album. If I were you I'd probably start with Lifted as it really does work incredibly well as a very complete album.
Pixies you've pretty much got to start with Doolittle as it has most of the big songs and is one of those "classic" albums. Then onto Surfer Rosa and maybe move onto the later stuff if you find you really like them...
agreed on beck and bright eyes fronts.
dunno about pixies.
so you cant go far wrong
Start with Doolittle.
thanks guys, any other classic albums I should be buying that arent the obvious (beatles, oasis, radiohead...)
enter the 36 chambers - wu tang clan
Superchunk (On the Mouth/No Pocky for Kitty)
Archers of Loaf (Icky Mettle/Vee Vee)
Black Flag (Damaged)
Minor Threat (Discography)
Bad Brains (Bad Brains)
Built to Spill (Keep it like a Secret)
Pavement (Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain....well, all of them to be honest, but this is probably the most accessible)
Dag Nasty (Can I Say?)
Jawbreaker (24 Hour Revenge Therapy)
Drive Like Jehu (Yank Crime)
Rocket From The Crypt (Scream Dracula Scream/Hot Charity)
Eels (Beautiful Freak)
Fugazi (13 Songs/The Argument/Repeater)
Gorilla Biscuits (Start Today)
The Lemonheads (Come on Feel The Lemonheads/It's a Shame about Ray)
...that'll get you started!
Would probably be
Neutral Milk Hotel-In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
The Mountain Goats- The Sunset Tree
The Smiths-The Queen Is Dead
Along with many, many Bright Eyes albums
But yeah you've pretty much gotta listen to Loveless etc to fully appreciate the full spectrum (not that they are in any way bad albums, of course)
this is really useful and will look into every single album. This was exactly what I was looking for!
for me Mellow Gold and Odelay are the two utterly essential albums.
mellow gold is my favourite beck record, i just love the whole vibe to it.
with people who are new to good music with his last two albums. I mean Guero and The Information, I haven't heard the new one, maybe that's good.
But every album from Mellow Gold (1994) to Seachange (2002) - Odelay (1996), Stereopathetic Soulmanure (released 1996, collected recordings 88-93), One Foot In The Grave (released 1996, recorded 1993 I think - band includes Scott Plouf of Built To Spill, Calvin Johnson of Beat Happening, Sam Jayne of Love as Laughter, and Chris Ballew of Presidents of the USA amongst others!), Mutations (1998), and Midnite Vultures (1999) are all essential albums.
The one with the "hits" on is Odelay. But you need to get all the albums I mentioned. There's loads of rare pre-1994 stuff too you can get if you scout about online.
