Pyramids
Aside from Jesu, I've almost completely lost interest in Hydrahead but these guys are fucking awesome. It's like black metal gone shoegaze. Anyone else heard them?

Yeah, and I've avoided them

That's why.
Wow
That's a really terribly written review. Mentioning TWDY and STOL is baffling, and although the Jesu comparison is probably closer to the mark, there's not a whole lot of similarity. That site also gave Colorloss Record by Belong 3/10 and wank themselves silly over Caspian so I feel vindicated in ignoring their opinions.
But you think DiS is better?
They hardly ever seem to praise forumlaic post rock on The Silent Ballet...they got lots of criticism last year from ATPR for having to many non post rock albums in their Top 50 of the year.
Just looking at their top rated for this year:
Beneva vs. Clark Nova
Bersarin Quartett
Earth
Fuck Buttons
Philip Jeck
Autistici
Gavin Bryars
Kashiwa Daisuke
Just a few of the non post rock artists they have praised, so your argument doens't really hold up does it?
...
"They hardly ever seem to praise forumlaic post rock on The Silent Ballet." I beg to differ:
Gifts From Enola, TWDY, Caspian, From The Sky, Upcdownc...
And I never said DiS was any better. I've criticised them numerous times for giving out too many 8 and 9/10 reviews. And quite honestly, I really don't see how you can argue that the Silent Ballet review of the Pyramids album is anything other than lazy, terribly written journalism. It could have been a 10/10 score at the end of that review and I'd still be saying the same thing.
I'll admit the Pyramids review isn't the best
but it is funny.
You've mentioned 3 post-rock bands they've praised, while both From The Sky and TWDY have been treated to lukewarm reaction. It is a zine that covers instrumental music, and with post-rock being a big part of that, they are always going to give high scores to some post-rock acts, but my point is they don't only give high scores to post rock acts. I think upc, GFA and Caspian all deserve the praise anyway, and don't sound anything like EitS on a close inspection.
I just don't think it's as bad or as snobby as you're making out tis all.
True and they've certainly reviewed some good stuff but
I've just seen some utterly baffling reviews on there.
Going slightly off topic...I know Caspian are very highly thought of by a lot of people but I really don't get the praise - I've listened to The Four Trees multiple times and aside from Crawlspace, I really don't see what all the fuss is about. so much of it sounds like second-rate EITS knock offs; too many bands seem to think hitting a few sweet spots on the fret board with a delay pedal constitutes a good post-rock song. EITS keep things interesting because they incorporate so many interlocking melodies; with Caspian, a lot of songs seem to consist of one guitarist hitting a couple of chugging distorted chords while the other tremelo picks a two or three note melody. Crawlspace stands out because it's one of the few songs where they resist the temptation to do this.
Sorry for the rant, but I absolutely love post-rock and I'd really like to know what people see in Caspian because I seem to be missing it.
I'm a big fan of Caspian
though it did take me some time to get into The Four Trees. I think it's a really powerful record, and I think it has more in comparision with Mono than EitS, they produce a much 'bigger' sound than the minimal nature of Explosions.
I just think it's a very well made record with lots of melody and emotion. 'Moshka' gets me everytime.
That's such a ridiculously snobby review
I bet the owner of that website married a woman simply because she had heard of Merzbow. They sound too afraid of liking anything that anyone else would like.
that is a well funny review
I aint sure that webiste likes music.
They're held up as this bastion
of post-rock friendly journalism but they only ever seem to hand out good reviews to the most generic quiet-loud EITS-fellating bands in the genre. The amount of formulaic wank I've checked out on the basis of reviews from that site is incredible.
they sound like jadded old dads
who one liked post rock. Its almost as funny as that webiste with the reveiwer who thought everything ever was racist.
It does, very good webzine
not afraid to distance themselves from bands that are meant to be scene and cool, not afraid of making enemies either, or praising popular bands...I mean, they gave Capsian and upcdownc 9s.
Generally, it's spot on with the reviews, never steered me wrong (unlike here), and worth a browse if you like instrumental music.
I downloaded a compilation from there not so long ago
I think you might have linked me to it.
I have heard the album
its really good. I love the drums deep in the mix thumping away and the massive noise of guitars, its brilliant.
dis reviewed them last week and it really made me wanna listen
Link for stream of the album here

I've not really bothered yet, though I have a copy
But I think I'll listen to it this afternoon and give thoughts.
Pitchfork gave it a pretty lame review too
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/51334-pyramids
In pretty much every post rock what ever review I have read they seem to say its all the same as every other post rock ever. Maybe the genre needs a kick up the arse...
I haven't heard the album, only 1 track
but it didn't seem like typical post-rock to me.
I didnt to me either
and I dont know much about the genre really.
It does need a kick up the arse
more bands like upcdownc and Caspian, and less bands trying to be Explosions in the Sky...it's become saturated by some very poor rip off acts.
yeah its a shame
when experimental music strays into the same formular. They will be playin old mens pubs as tribute bands for EitS in the future hehe
I like what I've heard of upcdownc I should get some of their stuff.
