See: Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes.
Can we have no more of this please? PLEASE?
lamest term ever.
Fleet Foxes is so boaring.....
Spiritualize can we put that on the coffee tabble too please.
Death Cad For Cutie too are a maybe although they are ok.
Cut Copy are a little bit coffee table dance music.
Bon Iver is ok though.
what the devil is that?
sounds like coffee table music to me
dcfc, fleet foxes and bon iver are coffee table music, then I need to get me to a furniture shop.
are, IMO, certainly not worthy of the love they're getting.
They're good but hardly original and certainly not that great.
But "Coffee table music for indie types" might be a bit of an exaggeration...
but I find fleet foxes really boring. Can anyone suggest a fleet foxes song(s) that could make me think otherwise?
White Winter Hymnal (Girl Talk Remix)
OK, I lied about the GTR.
But you gots to like that song, shirley...
Which Radiohead song has this guy been listening to?
why does "being original" matter?
is more set-of-drawers than coffee table, and Fleet Foxes are definitely a luxury rug band.
yeah, love this, you dirty post-bitch.
Actually, sorry - that was lust, not love. My bad.
but its soooooo going that way with Feist and the new Brendan Canning album. Urgh, dull dull dull.
to that tired old debate about Neutral Milk Hotel, it only ever ends with people shouting: "ITS AMAZING YOU'RE WRONG WRONG WRONG" and everyone who doesn't like it stubbornly refusing to see sense and laughing.
seeing as this is degenerating into naming random modish bands.
I always took that term hand in hand with MOR.
than the artist/band.
If you put Bon Iver (for example) on in the background and just remain barely conscious of it as you potter about your daily life then, yeah, it's coffee table music.
But if you take the time to dedicate some time and attention to it, let it grab your full attention then it is anything but coffee table.
We might as well call Do Make Say Think coffee-table music otherwise.
Tampax advert music.
We have a winner.
as bad as Dr Alban?
to provoke a reaction. Reactionary!
I mean yes but no but.
I mean there is Somerfield Instant and there is Columbian passed-through-a-cat Gourmet Shit, right?
And there's Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, Massive Attack, Radiohead, Spiritualized, BSS and let's say Portishead. Oh, and Robert Wyatt. They could pass muster at a dinner party on the coffee table. Incidentally why are they on the coffee table? To look nice? Dinner party music is an insult I can understand but....
Anyway, that does not stop these records from being amazing?
They also work as mattress on floor, bookshelves on bricks, pizza box ashtray type albums too.
Or does 50,000 Guardian readers buying a record make it shit?
Music is for moods. None of the bands mentioned in this thread are offensive and have something to offer (expect maybe Dr Alban). I have moments when I only want to listen to the likes of Entombed and Fear Factory when I am letting off some steam, but when at work all of these artists are perfect for getting the ambience right and keeping everyone happy but to only classify them as "work music" "easy listening" or "dinnerparty music" is unjust. Come on people do you listen to Sun O))), The Fuck Buttons and Boris all day cos they are abrasive noise and not classified as "coffee table music" or "dinner table music"? I think not.
I like to drink coffee, and listen to music I like when I sit on my sofa next to my coffee table. Bon Iver is clearly washing up music, as since I've bought that album, it hasn't left the cd player in my kitchen.
her first album "Let It Die" had some really nice moments (gatekeeper, one evening) and "7-4 shoreline" was one of the finest moments on the BSS album
I tend to be drawn toward more upbeat music, and I find it difficult to listen to artists such as Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes and so on during the daytime.
It's perfect for that calming down effect before bedtime though, or for Sunday hangovers.
and present-day Belle & Seb is pretty coffee table, especially Cat Power who is so dull nowadays its untrue. Its sad seeing previously great bands head this way.
Also, I know I'll probably get slated for saying it, but Sonic Youth have been pretty yawnsome for the last couple of albums. I still love them, but since around Murray Street they've bored the hell out of me.
Explosions In The Sky and Sigur Ros are the very definition of the term? Whoever said Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver can get bent.
and file under "sleepy music".
Don't get me wrong, I like the music, but the effect it has on me is relaxing. Too relaxing.
Dirty I'm more or less uninterested in (except Bull In The Heather, which is awesome).
EITS and Sigur Ros are both excellent suggestions too. So goddamn boring.
International Jetset, some really turgid songs on there imo. I'd rather just listen to Sister instead!
EITS is a good contender for worst gig I've ever been to. Tedium taken to staggering new depths (or heights depending on how you want to look at it). It wasn't worth suffering them for Four Tet either, sadly.
about Sigur Ros.
Sigur Ros yet. Coffee-table by any stretch of the imagination. Also a good 50% of the latest Hot Chip album's heading that way.
also, I think it's a bit harsh writing an artist of as 'coffee table' music, especially explosions in the sky, there music requires concentration, because it's interesting and layered, please dont write it off as background music ><
But if were going there I would probably say Nick Drake ><
FUCKING SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHTI SHTIS SJT SIH TISH IH
in this thread. It physically hurts. ;[
So much of this music goes in one ear and out the other. It's almost house-wifey. What makes it worse is that there are people out there who can do this simple, kitchen-sink, singer-songwriter stuff on genuinely affecting, genius-like levels and blow pretty much every dude with a beard and an acoustic guitar out of their trousers. I think you've got to be, like, truly amazing at it or you shouldn't even bother lol. Story of my life :S
Are you being sarcastic? ;)
I was away doing gigs, now im back to wash ordinary yawns over your lives once more.
Dinner party music, surely?
Coffee table BOOK.
like ah, Watchmen or Country Diary Of an Edwardian Lady
'credible david gray'
as in ...such and such is just a credible david gray.....
the quality of the song is whats important- much of the material from certain bands people would hate if it was done by someone they didnt respect (i.e. david gray)....its also agood way to be objective about good songs by bands you dont like (for example, there is a track on the last coldplay record that if bon iver or james yorkston sang it people would adore it, but because they didnt people hate on it)....
and lwatch the culture show and later with jools. They have a subscription to Word magazine also, and bought crocs for all the family last year
much everyone here...
personally I think it is a very good record- but not the best record ive heard all year, nor is it likely to be one of the best records for the next 10 years as some people seem to be assuring me
bon iver really close to that ray lamontagne bloke from a few years back?
is fuck the people who think Murray Street and Sonic Nurse are boring
