Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - s/t debut

marcofella [Edit] [Delete] 18 replies 10:45, 14 July '05
Anyone heard this band/album? Captainpoohat recommended them too me and I’m very thankful he did.

I can definitely feel the Neutral Milk Hotel comparisons a little. The vocal are delivered in a similar fashion to the Violent Femmes too. Incredibly melodic and uplifting… always making me smile. It is overtaking my own personal summertime 2005 pick (Envelopes) as the album to dance to while down the park on a Saturday afternoon.

Fav tracks? Hmmm, it’s a toughie but here goes. ‘In This Home On Ice’ has got to be one of THE pop tunes of the year. Layers of textured guitar making you feel all warm inside. ‘Over and Over Again’ with its jerky bass and simple synths, you would be forgiven for thinking Talking Heads had reformed… great stuff!

Anyone else into this?

Downloaded the tracks on their site. This Home On Ice is the type of track that would've made me come in my pants in 1994. Not sure I like them enough to buy the album, there's loads of other stuff in from of it in the queue.

I've had it for a while but never gotten round to listening to it, but I'll give it a go at lunchtime, seeing as most of the bands I've heard you recommending recently I've enjoyed (Saul Williams and The The, for example)

Hmmm, only listened to this about 2 or 3 times, but I just can't get into it.

I've said this already but I think my main gripe is that the whole thing sounds really contrived, it just so wants to be arty and quirky, even down to the name. The songs just seemed quite boring to me, and the vocals annoyed me a lot, in a really annoying David Byrne kind of way. (and I like the talking heads!)

Meh... I don't really feel the need to go back and listen to it, to be honest.

Download the Wolf Parade album, it's better :P

      EvilTwin say:

"Clap Your Hands Say Yeah are a dull, watered down tenth generation copy of Talking Heads. Because of this they will be popular. We are not interested in them."

        Hah. A bit harsh.

They're good, but not anything particularly superamazingspecial. PF trying to make another Arcade Fire? Maybe, maybe not. The whole "the new Arcade Fire" tag is used waaay too much now; just a random freak occurence that isn't likely to be repeated.

Get The Most Serene Republic album instead, it just came out in the US on Arts & Crafts and it is top-notch.

I don't think there's anything too sinister in PF rating something 9 either. Arcade Fire happened to take off but they rated Broken Social Scene and the Unicorns similarly - both got good word-of-mouth as a result but neither went stellar (Unicorns unlikely to now, sadly).

I like the CYHSY album. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool cynic myself but some of the dismissive opinions are a bit sad, in the proper sense of the word.

Thinking of checking out that Most Serene Republic though...

Whats so bad about the Unicorns going Stellar? Even though they have split, isn't it what every band wants?

            • Re: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - s/t debut

I didn't say it would be bad! Nothing wrong with that - I was trying to refute the suggestion that Pitchfork are just trying to engineer buzz bands all the time. I'd have loved them to be successful!

See that PF announcement, what?, yesterday about CYHSY noticing Coco Schwab on the guest list. If I was in a band and Bowie took notice I think I'd fall over dead. Anyway, I shall try to hunt down a copy. Gonna have to drive to LA for this one and Aerogramme's. Amoeba records, you know, is a like a temple; they got everything.

i really like it in a 'hey i like this background music' kind of way.
