Q Magazine
understand its not very well thought of, but have never read it. Just discovered, however, that they gave The Knife's Silent Shout 1/10. Q Magazine is officially shit.

:-O
thats crazzzzy. emphasising it with more z's to emphasise thats really crazy!
Q
marks out of 5.
1/10 on a five star rating system?
dunno
i saw it on metacritic which said 10% so i thought itd be 1 out of 10...
guess they gave it a half then...
metacritic sometimes change the actual numerical values of lex flexible marking systems
dependant on the tone of the review
^less flexible
Q does mark out of 5?
but yeah its awful, I always think it seems like big record companies are sending suspicious bags with dollar on them signs their way....... and have in fact heard from a few sources that this is the case.
Their reviews are so predictable etc... argh.
Sorry to bang on abou the knife
but this is apparently how Q summed up these geniuses: 'A hideous mess of electro noodling and maddeningly obtuse, tuneless vocals.'
kid a got 3/5
stadium arcadium got 5/5
as did x&Y
to be honest though, the market Q is aimed at probably wouldn't like the knife, so maybe the review is essentially accurate? If totally wrong.
WHAT!?!
nah it was 5
same issue that black holes and revelations got 5........ appauling.... the new muse album has gotten a 5 also
(not that I am saying it isn't worth a 5, I haven't heard it
and only found out about it even existing just now on the Q wikipedia.... but the other one was YAWN)
(OHHHHHHHHHH its a live album)
ps.
muse are annoying
Matt Bellamy thinks you are too.
:p
So did
a Semisonic album. And Reveal by REM.
ps.
allssssssssooooo, they always seem to have loads of 'top 100 BESTY SONGSE EVR BRITISH DONE BY THEM YEAH?' by which they are most likely trying to hide some form of journalistic inadequacies.
Are there any music magazines that anyone likes?
Maybe this should be a thread of itself.
I buy them all coz I get easily bored so I walk to the garage next to my flat and buy magazines. Inevitably, I end up reading Q and disagreeing vehemently with just about everything it says. For some reason in my mind Q = Dido and her ilk. But still, I buy it sometimes.
I quite like the Word and Mojo.
The Word always has good features and is well written.
Uncut and mojo are ace
I like all the articles in uncut about older bands, plus they totally bum sonic youth which I'm down with..... mojo is good too, they both also show alot of interest + positive ctriticism towards more alternative acts (eg. like you find on DiS)... never read word though... i think I bought one once when sufjan stevens was on the cover? or did i dream that?
i wish i could afford to buy stuff i hated
yeah true on the constant nostalgia
it wouldn't heart to be a bit more contemporary I guess...
but the review section is always great I have to say. And inside always has something interesting... plus I can cut out loads of the pictures and put them on my wall!!!
word is alright
artrocker is alright
i mean, it's ... alright.
isn't it?
sometimes.
and i suppose clash isn't bad, although the last issue i bought came with a free cd with scouting for girls on it
i read the word in a dentists office once, didn't impress me
Bought Clash once.
Not impressed.
AU is good, pretty much only available in Ireland though. (Full disclosure: I work for them. Try it though if you can - www.myspace.com/altulster)
i was really unimpressed with artrocker
pretentious drivel
the word has some good articles and interviews sometimes
DiS is the way forward - it's free and i trust the reviews (most the time)
It's not a magazine...
... but Stool Pigeon.
plan b is good
yes it is.
Lets all do a zine together then
Stool Pigeon (FREE!) is pretty great
Other than that:
Plan B, Last Hours, Skyscaper and I still get MRR when I can find it.
actually
is bearded any good?
nowhere round here sells it, you can read back issues for free online (beardedmagazine.co.uk) but pdfs are shit so i never bother
my interest largely stems from the fact that the first issue had matt berry on the cover, matt berry is awesome
I like Q
just because the main features are really well written and quite exhaustive, so when you've finished them you feel like you actually know something new about an artist. I don't like a lot of the music they feature, but it's very readable.

But why is it pink?
Discover for some reason.
Google likes it. Also, for fruityness.
plan b is generally pretty great
stool pigeon is very good interview, news and feature wise, a bit shit review wise, but its free.
artrocker is a bit too teenaged for me...
rockarolla is great if you're into a bit of heavy...
Plan B is usually spot on
although I wasn't keen on their review of the Times New Viking record! Skyscraper is good, Wire's great if you have a lot of time to investigate the music they write about. And it's not a music magazine, but Sight and Sound is great for films (infinitely better than Empire etc), and I recently found a little magazine is WHSmiths called Little White Lies - each issue seems to be themed, I got the Persepolis issue, which had some really interesting stuff about Iranian punk music in it.
Does anyone like rocksound here?
it's pretty much the only music magazine I read regularly at the moment, otherwise it's mostly just blogs,DiS and Pitchfork.
I like Rock Sound
Too much My Chemical Romance in there though.
To be fair to Q
they did give 'A New White' by Subtle 4 stars.
Still a shite magazine though.
Vice Magazine is great
if you're into misogyny and women beating.
Q is dreadful;
but they have a party line, which they have to tow. Their target readers like Snow Patrol, James Blunt and Keane, so what would be the point in saying 'one star - they're a pile of bollocks'.
Having said that, the quality of writing has also declined massively. I first started buying it in 1997 and it had some actual articles in it then - as opposed to top fifty lists every month.
Mojo is a bit muso obviously, but there are some great pieces in there, like The Specials article last month.
...and let's face it. Who Isn't?
Does anybody on this board agree with Q's 1/5 mark for The Knife?
...or would it be way too uncool to agree?
