Making a mixtape to impress a girl

Jesus_Quintana [Edit] [Delete] 52 replies 03:07, 10 July '05
Yes, I'm that sad

I need some help though

This is what I've got so far (I'm trying to keep it happy and light-ish, and both impress her with my fabulous music taste whilst not scaring her off with cheesy-ness or Mark E Smith. Here Comes Your Man is not allowed for the former reason):

Blister In The Sun - Violent Femmes
Venus In Furs - Velvets (that's quite pervy but meh)
Roots Manuva - Witness The Fitness
Ween - Push Th’ Little Daisies
Eels - I Like Birds
Devendra Banhart - At The Hop
Rufus Wainwright - Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk
Pavement - Cut Your Hair (or Range Life, I'm not sure if she's a Smashing Pumpkins fan so I don't want to offend her...)

I'm thinking you guys can help.

Hah, why? (aside from the Velvets)

I always find Anal Cunt's 'You're Pregnant So I Kicked You In The Stomach to be something quite special.

In all seriousness though, I'd go for Rufus Wainwright's 'Vibrate' over the track you've chosen. Chuck in My Bloody Valentine - 'Sometimes' though and I'm yours.

Prolapse - 'Tina This Is Matthew Stone'. You'll be in there no problems.

  • Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

Your reasons are shallow and flawed, but as I once did this myself, for the same reasons, I shall humour you! I only hope shes a hot indie chick, and that you get some. I didn't :( Some of the songs on mine:

    Bluetones - Autophilia
    Brendan Benson - Tiny Spark
    something by flaming lips
Help She Can't Swim - I Don't Need You (I have no idea why, but its ace)
Billy Ray Cyrus - Achy Breaky Heart (because I love to drop one awful cheesebomb in every compilation I make)
Fell City Girl - Weaker Light

If you're going to suggest that my selections are the reason I didn't get any, try harder! That's too obvious!

Oh I'm already "in there" (I think) so it's not gonna be a sad, "I made this for you" kinda thing, I already told her I'd make her one.

      But yes, it's still sad.

fit 'Frankie Teardrop' by Suicide in there somewhere too, so beautiful. Directly after the Prolapse track might be best.

HOmosexual by the Soft Pink Truth
              Prayer to God - Shellac
              Albino Slug - Scratch Acid

(I'm a girl). sooo, i would say Roots Manuva's 'dreamy days' rather than 'witness the fitness'. and some pavement's always good.

BUt girls are just biased. While you are trying to suggest something a girl would like, we are trying to suggest what a girl should like. Therefore your opinion is null and void. So ner.

^^grrr. i do love hearing music i've not heard before, but are you trying to 'educate' the girl you like, as if she has no good taste herself? or just share some good music with her? i guess it depends what you want the mix-tape to achieve. the roots manuva thing was just a suggestion, bucky.

Hmmmm never noticed the perviness of Venus in Furs. With a re-listen its there, but meh, still good.
You should add in You're Just a Baby- B&S or Carrion BSP.
I Like Birds is good, you'd win me with the one, especially if she's never heard it.

              • Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

I think the Ween song is too creepy. It's those imitation children's vocals. The first few songs off 'white pepper' would be good though. 'Exactly where i'm at' or bananas and blow'.

A bit of Super Furry Animals might be good too. 'Hello Sunshine' is good for the 'you're a minger, i'm a minger too' bit. Whether that would go down well I don't know. 'Northern Lites' maybe?

i think your subconscious in selecting the tracks here.

fact is, if you do start going out with her, she'll wonder why you listen to the fall so much when it wasn't on her mixtape.

'She's a girl' by The Attraction
                  'Hey baby' by Chia Pet
'In every dream home a heartache' by Roxy Music

surely if you're a Fall fan then 'Bill Is Dead' should be on there

and maybe 'Love in the Country' by Vanilla Fudge if you met in the countryside
                  -

                  'Permafrost' by Magazine*

*if you want her to think you're psychotic - main lyric;'I will drug you and fuck you/on the permafrost' - oh hell yeah

                    Erm, good advice

Witness the Fitness is amusing, Dreamy Days starts out alright but it ends up about the destruction of a relationship ffs doesn't it? It's the worst possible song I could pick! Though I did think about it.

                    'I like birds' is cute.

True about the Ween creepiness, but I think I'll keep it.

i dunno, all i remember is the line "there's gonna be fun and lots of laaaarfter". and that it's quite sweet, overall. not listened to the album in a while.

ok, in case i'm wrong, try mogwai's 'take me somewhere nice', or radiohead's 'optimistic'. or weezer's 'falling for you'.

"the one I love" is probably a good choice. It is not his best song but its so catchy its unreal.

Some Peaches would be great too, depending on how easily she is shocked too." fuck the pain away" is a good tune.
