would have seen them tonight If I went to Koko
but I'm skint so I'm going to put more strings on my Awkward Silences remix and read more of The Brothers Kreamkrackerovz
Self-consciously edgy and alternative music with the edges trimmed off to maek it safe consumable and allow a mainstream indie to feel like they watching something risky and dangerous only with no element or risk or interest whatsoever.
A photocopy of a photocopy of a photopcopy of a far more interesting band.
They're literally the band that annoy me the most out of all the bands in the world.
we played with them at the start of our last tour, and while the sound was pretty awful i thought they were good fun. Kind of like Depeche Mode without any keyboards.
But I did seem to react quite strongly. Then luckily all three of the people I was with wanted to leave halfway through. They might have improved after that. It was a few months back though - maybe they've got better songs now...
I thought they were good, they sound like P.I.L
less teenage for sho', but i'm pretty fucking teenage
i can't decide
more a sense of camp theatrics. I like 'em. Who cares who he used to go out with, the songs are good and the new EP is a cut above most new bands efforts.
The songs seemed pretty weak when I saw them and you can better camp theatrics elsewhere.
From the second post. The Nick Cave comparisons are going to dog them for a while though. They seem a much more complete and well rounded band than Les Inc. Not that I love Les Inc any less but they always seemed a bit hit and miss.
is you're being compared to one of the most (and in my opinion quite possibly the single) compelling, charismatic and inventive performers/songwriters of the last 20 years. And I just don't feel they're up to that.
In fairness this is probably why I dislike them so much (if what they did was comparable to someone a bit less unique and incredible it'd probab;y just wash over me). But I just feel they're trying to operate in a field where I just feel they can't compete with what else is going on there.
And I also think (despite you saying they're not trying to be edgy) what works in the best examples of the kind of music they're doing is the mix of camp theatrics with depth and genuinely envelope-pushing, challenging performances and musical/lyrical content. Without it, it all becomes a bit of a novelty act with a guy prancing about and snarling for no reason. Which is what I feel with Ox. Eagle. Lion. Man.
I don't simply even mean Cave here; there's various other underground bands, David Cronenberg's Wife being an example, who work in the same territory and are much better performers/song-writers.
Which I guess comes down to the bit where "who he used to go out with" does admittedly come into it. I honestly do not beleive for a second that, were it not for the Peaches connection (and admittedly, to an extent, the achievements of Les Incompetents), this band would get the attention/audience they get.
and they were on the bill before operator please, which probably made them seem more impressive because they are so crap. ITS JUST A SONG ABOUT PING PONG...piss off.
but it wasnt just that i thought they were really strong on stage and had good tunes.
