various plugins on t'net that allows windows media to play them
where can i find these?
search for 'm4a plugin' on something similar
It'll play pretty much any music file you throw at it. I couldn't imagine using anything else now.
Plus, it'll convert m4a to mp3 so you can listen on your non-apple branded portable music player. Hoorah!
converts m4as to mp3s. You just have to change the settings on the Advanced menu.
It makes a minute, barely noticable (if at all) difference to the sound quality as long as the mp3 has a high enough bit rate (which should be a bit higher than the m4a's as they are slightly better quality).
in "they are slightly better quality" being m4as.
if you have mp4s you can play them on the most recent sony walkmans (or should that be walkmen?) without converting them, which is nice, should you , like me, want to not have an iPod...
Will play everything, ogg, m4a, wma, mp3, flac...
And it's not tricky to set up and customize like foobar.
Free, simple to use, syncs to ipods, good interface, links to lastfm.
M4A files are AAC - as usual Apple use their own name and take the credit for something someoneelse created. Ho-hum.
-1 for mediamonkey - put it's hooks too far into my system for my liking, but I know it has lots of fans.
AAC files are Apples implementation of the mp4 standard (specifically m4a audio files). I don't think they've ever claimed they were responsible for mp4's, just their own codec.
