Try before buy and that.
listen to Battles instead.
to be all about musicians impressing musicians
it's the kind of thing I could imagine a session guy would love but no normal person would bother with - well, the new stuff anyway, i don't really know the old
me 'what burns never returns' and it is fucking wank, they don't even sound like they're playing in time with one another.
What Burns... is a phenomenal record. They're not playing out of time at all, it's all the different patterns and polyrhythms going off which just give an impression of no fixed beat. It's actually ridiculously rigid and structured.
ChrisJabe, i've got pretty much everything they've ever released. Have you got an MSN address? PM me and i'll stick a few zipped albums in a sharing folder for you if you want.
i can only find stuff off their last album....which isnt that great. but i think their earlier stuff is much better that Battles. try youtube maybe?
but For Respect is great, you could probably pick it up on Amazon marketplace for £4ish if you fancy a punt.
...post Ian Williams.
And the really early stuff pre-Ian Williams is nowt special either.
To me though, What Burns Never Returns and American Don contain the sound of a couple of genius' (Ian Williams and Damon Che) absolutely mastering their instruments (guitar and drums respectively) and pushing rock music into unvisited territories.
Yup. That good. My mind is still blown whenever i listen.
Che should never have reformed them with the same name after American Don, because nobody will ever get near what Williams achieved under the Don Caballero banner.
...just incase anybody missed that point.
if you want to check them out, if you try and keep to williams-era (i.e. earlier stuff)
this rules! damon che is a brilliant brilliant drummer
