Stereo
13th note
Mono
Flying duck
.....
i've not been to the new Stereo.
or Mono for a gig. Only for booze.
stereo is good
mono isn't the best for gigs but i've seen some good bands there.. like Jaga Jazzist! mm!
WHAT??!?!????!?!?!!!!
When, oh WHEN did i miss that??!?!
aww!
it was a couple years ago now i'd say.. it was interesting to see them all try to fit on the stage!
Yeah
Jaga Jazzist were pretty incredible, but i personally believe it was slightly ruined by the fact that Mono really isn't a good venue. Nice pub, but not a good venue. I was surprised to see it on your list! Not as surprised as i am to see what i thought were pretty clued-up music fans actually acknowledging King Tut's existence, nevermind putting it in a list of best venues in the city. Aside from maybe 3 or 4 excellent touring bands OVER THE COURSE OF A WHOLE YEAR, the venue is one of the most irrelevant and clueless places in the whole of Glasgow, completely detached from any of the little vibrant scenes going on. Well, i guess if you want to count mostly nights of embarrassingly horrid lad-rock and Killers rip-off bands who don't mind continuously playing exclusively to their friends (who all had to buy overpriced tickets to see an unsigned band) as being part of anything meaningful in the city, then go ahead, put it in your lists. Loltimes.
.
i only mentioned mono because of the fact that i had seen some good bands there..including YOU.. it's not great as a venue, i'd agree. and i'm in complete agreement about Tut's. i can't remember the last time i was there.. probably Broadcast or something an incredibly long time ago.. I try to avoid it..
shup boo gboo
oh hee
ps
Fulfilling a lifetime ambition and playing The Barrowlands later this year makes me so happy that i think i will put this as my favourite venue in the city. I've seen so many amazing gigs there, as well as it being the place where i went to my first ever concert (Fugazi in '95).
Closely followed by Sleazys and Stereo.
flying duck?
wassat?
also tut's > barrowlands
i think i might like barfly the most cos i've seen some of my favourite gigs there, doesn't necessarily mean it's the best venue though
actually
i had a second to think about that
same principle applies to tut's as the barfly... it's kind of a shit venue really, but i've seen some great gigs there so i kinda like it more
barrowlands . tut's
that's better
clearly i meant
barrowlands > tut's
silly fosters
oran mor
Got to love the Note though.
Not been to Tut's in ages.
oh aye, Oran Mor.
Mono were blinding there. As were !!!
Eastwood Theatre.
I saw Aberfeldy there and it was lovely.
we played
o'henry's last sunday and it was pretty good actually
also City Halls
Joanna Newsom there was amaaaaazing
the admiral (the hold)
the grand ol opry (someone going round selling pies between bands? i'll have some of that)
Grand Ole Opry
And don't forget 90p for Vodka and Coke and £1.10 for a Gin and Tonic...
oran mor
is def in between sleazys and arches at least. the sound in there was fantastic every time ive been. pelican isis and mum are some of my favourite shows ive seen and its thanks to the great sound.
Mum? really?
That was one of my biggest disappointments of last year. Although they did seem awfully nice.
what was
dissappointing for you?
the set
the performance
i think they played well, but it just seemed to be missing the magic i thought it might have had. Plus it was expensive for where it was.
you
think it cost too much? i was dying to see them so wasn't bothered, and it pretty much sold out. not enough old stuff i guess, but their singer left the band so what can you do. i thought it was a charming performance, and again the sound was ace.
I'd go for
1. Tuts
2. Barrowlands
3. Mono
4. Sleazy's (only above the Arches because it's only 5 minutes from me)
5. Arches
6. 13th Note
7. Oran Mor (bit expensive though)
8. Barfly
9. ABC
The sound at the Carling Academy has been shocking almost everytime I've been so it gets my vote for worst.
surely SECC gets the award for worst?
wrong
king tut's is really overrated. sound is shite.
sound's been pretty good for
El-P, Will Haven, Every Time I Die, Yeasayer, The Blood Brothers. Can't think of anything that was awful there.
Same with Academy, apart from The Roots whose sound wasn't fantastic. Otherwise i don't have too much cause for complaint. SECC, particularly hall 3, takes the prize for worst sound
tuts
is over-rated i say. mono- how many gigs are there? ive only seen roddy woomble. arches is pretty great, recently saw aiden moffat there, was really nice. secc=worst, carling close second.
The Arches is great
I've only seen Aiden Moffat and Efterklang there but they've both been pretty special shows.
Efterklang
was AMAZING. I hadn't expected to be sitting myself in a wicker chair though
Too true
I wasn't a huge fan of their recorded stuff before the gig but it was just so jaw-droppingly good, especially when they got everyone standing up at the front for the final song.
and it was the
song i wanted to hear most as well :)
"we were told that people in Glasgow would laugh at us wearing moustaches on our faces and funny clohes". Bless 'em.
i'd agree with this
every gig ive seen there has been far too quiet
^
It's close
I'll give you that, but Carling Academy just shades it for me. Ben Folds and Eels there are the ones that spring to mind, muddy just didn't describe them.
As i said
The Roots were pretty bad sound-wise, but Ministry, Massive Attack, Justice, The Mars Volta and Biffy Clyro were all fine. I guess it depends upon what you've seen.
Probably, yeah
SECC is almost universally bad though, I don't think I've ever heard anyone have a good word to say about it.
I thought that when Radiohead...
played there a couple of years ago the sound was excellent and it was also good for a white stripes gig a few years back as well.
That being said it has been pish every other time!
agree
bout the academy...sound is piss-poor
Mine would be:
1) Barrowlands (still never been to a venue anywhere thats atmosphere even comes close)
2) The Arches
3) Sleazys
4) 13th Note
5) King Tuts
I'm so jealous, I wish I lived in a big city.
:(
It really ain't.....
that a big a city either!
A city that actually has decent music venues withbands I want to see play.
There are no places like this near where I live.
Looks like a move is on the cards galactic!!
............................................................................................................................................
I was considering a move to Leeds, my closest friend lives there.
i want to move to leeds
??
Where do you live, I actually thought you lived in Leeds?
I'm guessing Hull, am I right?
you are correct
its not that i dont like it.as much as it gets slagged off its been a nice city to me.its just theres miles more going on in leeds.my gf lives there.all the bands i like never play hull its always leeds with the exception of biffy clyro in recent years.
Aye
Barras is top cat for slightly bigger gigs. ABC i find a bit cold, both for gigs and club nights, though i've not seen a band play ABC2. SECC is a soulless cavern.
Tuts, sleazy's and the 13th Note are great for wee gigs and barfly is okayish. My band quite enjoyed playing The Beat Club because the bar is right beside the stage so everyone's up at the front for the band which is nice. Maggie Mays ain't so great, lots of pillars and rubbish sound.
Oran Mor is probably my favourite. Trail of Dead there was amazing, Stars too.
MGMT @ Beat Club had
pretty bad sound, but that may not be indicative of how it generally works out.
ABC2 is alright if it's near-capacity.
The Beat Club ain't bad at all...
seen a few gigs in there and have really enjoyed it, the sound has been good and there has been a great wee atmosphere!
Still not sold on oran mor yet, which is a pity cos its about 5 mins from my flat!
this reminds me
whatever happened to that Glasgow DiSers meat up europeancakeghost was organising?
ah fuck
Classic Grand is GREAT! Very pretty venue and great sound! Shame its a bit overlooked. Saw Aereogramme there for their last Glasgow gig :(
Pedant alert
But wasn't the last Aereogramme gig in Glasgow at the QMU? Or was I pretending I had something in my eye for some other reason?
Yes
The last Aereogramme gig in Glasgow was at the QMU and it really was brilliant.
I'm finding
that i'm mostly in agreement with you overall, except i'd put Sleazys as my fave small venue.
How about the QM?
I've found it hit-and-miss: Mr Scruff and Dimmu Borgir were great; Fear Factory nicht so gut
been once, played once
saw The Rakes, was a bit of a riot, lots of neds too....sounded okish. Christ, i lie, I saw OPM there......(!!!!!!)
oo
another place i haven't been to in years! i think the last gig i saw there was Stereolab.. also saw Soulwax there once. random!
Barrowlands is the worst venue in the UK.
Terrible sound, no atmosphere, sticky floor, shitty location etc...just plain BAD.
Tut's is massively overrated...and just plain BAD as well. I normally enjoy the banter downstairs before hand, but i've never had a good gig there. Maybe if they did something with the stage. I've not been in years, thinking about it.
I really like The Arches, 13th Note, Sleazies and Oran Mor. Yet to go to Stereo.
I've only ever been to a few acoustic things at Mono.
Haven't been to the barras
in years, but i've put it as my top venue due to the memories of seeing Pavement and Sonic Youth and all that guff there. Big venues are always rubbish, but i think it just pips it as the best of a bad lot. Compared to the Academy it's like some sort of futuristic super-venue.
Yeah, the Academy is like a bucket of sick in the face, really.
"Barrowlands is the worst venue in the UK"??
I never usually would say this, as i'm all for individual opinion, but i'm afraid i must break my rule:
you are wrong.
Okay
I was over exaggerating slightly as i've never been to more than 2 venues south of the border.
I just don't like the barra's! I've never been to a good gig there. Bad luck on my behalf, perhaps.
yeah, i guess it could be.
same way that i've never had TOO many problems with the Academy. Seriously though, a good gig at the Barras is unbeatable :)
^^^Barrowlands - No atmosphere?
What the hell gig were you at?
Everytime I have been (thats a lot of times) the place has been jumping up and down and going nuts for the duration.
^ this
Where's Your Head At? and Don't Mug Yourself at the Barrowland are two of the best moments of my gig history
aye, likewise for me
'cept with Biffy Clyro doing 'Wave Upon Wave Upon Wave' with the whole crowd doing the handclappy part
I don't really go much
The last was Explosions In The Sky, which was terrible!
Maybe i'm just turning into a grumpy old man.
---
Oh, i like the ABC 2 as well.
anybody know
what the Winchester Club is like?????
Explosions was terrible, yes.
they were swamped - it didn't feel right.
I like the abc2 too.
although i can never find/see a merch table whenever there's a gig there! what's up with that?
It's usually been
up against the back wall, in the corner next to the bar (if that makes any sense)whenever I've seen bands there.
I hatehatehate Tut's
horrible little place. it's usually freezing and has less than fuck all atmosphere. Barrowlands is shit too, as are the Arches.
I like Sleazys, Oran Mór and the new Stereo is quite nice too. A lot bigger than I expected!
MacHuills High Street...
use to be great fun for gigs.
I have also seen a good few gigs at Soundhaus which were good.
so far out though
isn't it in anderston or thereabouts?
Captain's Rest
??
it's a weird, scary pub but some good gigs have happened in the basement.
oh wait
we're talking 'best' glasgow venues.. not 'all' glasgow venues. shut up, self..
Captain's Rest is pretty awesome
It's been bought over by PCL apparently and will play host to Times New Viking pretty soon. Even though it can only hold about 10 people. Weirdness.
???
jeez i didn't hear that. that's strange! no more free hire then i guess.. was it quack quack that we saw there? that was good.
Times New Viking
Health, and Aids Wolf are all playing to the Captain's Rest soon which whould be ace.
no way
can anyone include the carling academy in glasgow...
its utterly fuckin dreadful
craigx
anybody know what the Winchester Club is like...?!?!
I have never been to the winchester....
although there is a couple of nights up coming there that I read about (might have been on DIS) that sound good so will check it out soon.
it's like...
like an old man's social club, with aggressive door staff and hour long queues for the bar!
i like it though
I played a gig there last month...
It was Pin Up Nights so it was a good night in general. Sound is a bit gash in Winchester Club though...
That might just be me making excuses though.
Polish Club
Do they still have things going on here or is it only Polish hip-hop now?
Is Brunswick Cellars still going?
And how much is it for an apartment at the old Baird Hall on Sauchiehall St?
is the Classic Grand any good?
My band are playing our first show in Scotland there but I could only see one mention in this thread!
I've been there once
It's rubbish.
Classic Grand is ok
favourites would be Barrowlands/ABC 1 for bigger gigs, Mono/13th Note/Sleazys for smaller gigs. Oran Mor is good, QMU is good for. Had a bad experience in Tuts a couple of years ago involving trouble with a drunken punter who was a complete sleazebag. The security made a complete arse of it and let him stay in the venue when he should have been ejected at the very least and the management backed their security. Put me off what I thought was an ok venue up till that point and I didn't go back for a long time
the staff in tuts
are complete arseholes
Venues that people have missed:
I have seen some good gigs at the cca. The sound and lighting is always great there. My freinds band played at the warehouse last week and there was a really good atmosphere in there.
cca
is it good to play?
Barrowlands used to be my favourite,
but in recent times, I think I now prefer Tut's. It's much cosier. Although the way it's set out is a bit frustrating, with there being a massive space next to the bar which you can't see the stage at all form.
Barfly and Sleazies areis pretty good, but I've only really seen local bands play there.
Ivory Blacks is a nice venue too, but again it's so tiny that it's just little local bands that play there.
what about the barras2?
i'm going to see the blacklips there next sunday.. i presume its just the downstairs bar?
the arches
is shit
The Admiral is goood
South Central & Hot Club De Paris were pretty damn good in there on Friday.
XX TEENS & Hatcham Social In May :)
.
horrid, horrid staff
some people i know who have booked it for events/clubs have many horror stories of being thrown out hours before closing time after paying massive deposits when the staff have decided that it's not quite busy enough.
.
whats the old fruit market like?
