Spolier: it's a crock of shit
"the Times have declared its jukebox the best in Britain."
errrr...the good ship jukebox > all.
what is it? give me examples of stuff they have on their jukebox.
do they allow you to hit it like fonzy?
since it's been broken :D
The greatest small venue in London by a country mile.
in the sense that you can go there randomly and you're likely to see something good. the luminaire is probably closest. lotsa good promoters though..
the new cross inn? THE NEW CROSS INN?
the new cross inn is pretty much terrible most of the time, i hate the layout and drinks are a massive rip off.
amersham is a lot better.
would be a lovely venue if it wasn't chock full of cunts.
No Lewisham Fox? Of course not! That's why it's not chock full of cunts. Hooray!
It's the only place EVER I've had a total stranger take 'secret sips' from my pint and thought that was acceptable behaviour when I got arsey with him.
Plus the manageress was a dick last time I was there.
As for the amersham, is titch still doing the catapult club? He's an arsehole to.
The Emirates for me. The Boss is even playing there soon.
2.5 of those.
Bloc Party's gigs at The Windmill were anything but 'storming'. And I should know. ;-)
Castle is hideous! And Nambucca is hardly amazing isn't it? The stage is pretty much a table in the corner.
Is alright. Depends what you are looking for. It's just a pub circuit venue. Anyone who's ever been to Costa Mongers in Brum will know what a real dump looks like.
I've still got your (Moscow2/Love Ends Disaster) email asking us for a gig there in December. ;-)
It's an alright pub but they never put anything good on, unless you're really into average covers bands. The Black Sheep should be struck off as it's in Croydon which is near impossible to get to.
Add to that list Cargo, Barden's and Notting Hill Arts Club.
Having played Nambucca I can safely say this is one of the worst venues in the couintry let alone London
I'd put Cargo, Bardens and Notting Hill Arts Club way before Nambucca (who good has ever played there?), The Windmill (worst sound ever), the Dublin Castle and the Hope and Anchor.
I agree with the inclusion of the Old Blue. The booker / manager of the place really knows his stuff and there's some good free nights, even if the clientele / atmosphere downstairs isn't to everyone's taste.
I'd certainly nominate Cargo and NHAC. Dublin Castle and Hope & Anchor seem to be on the list for historical reasons rather than any great relevance these days. If you are going for small venues that have on a lot of incredibly new (and mostly fairly ropey) acts, I'd include the Bull and Gate and Water Rats.
Not been to Nambucca much, but I like it there.
a few years back, but then it all went to shit :(
but given our disagreements over venues (notting hill arts club MUST be a joke), i think i'll just have to agree to disagree with you over this too.
Nambucca is the only place I've ever been where the toilet lids are taped shut. what's that about? are you suppposed to shit on the lid?
Nambucca has changed a lot since LED! played there, mate. The live bit is pretty much a seperate room now and the stage is to the left hand side rather than in the corner. It's still not great, but it's a lot better than it was.
where would a band go?!
Hoxton Bar And Kitchen
The King's Head (Crouch End)
Notting Hill Arts Club
except for Industry, I don't like the layout
and you probably can add Cafe OTO to that list. The programming so far is nothing short of sublime: Anni Rossi, Times New Viking, Jay Reatard, Mt Eerie, Richard Youngs and Charalambides are all due to play.
First gig this Sunday ...
and it is very near my house so gets bonus points
Is very nice, though the ceiling is a little low for a man of my height!
The Guardian's one is ridiculous.
May I add the ludicrousness of their bar prices? £3-odd for a bottle of Tigerpiss and NO draught lager/beer? Fuck right off, please.
not "best bars to drink in"
as long as it isn't completely sold out, the sound quality depends very much on whoever does the sound and it costs hardly ever more than a fiver to get in.
But it's mainly listed because the various promoters that use the venue hardly ever fail to deliver: Artrocker, Twee as Fuck, Goonite, Silver Rocket et al all know how to put a strong, coherent bill together.
Hoxton Bar & Kitchen is pretty good but the bar prices are a killer for me. Great bar though, when I'm rich.
combines the ironic cool that its owner Vice Magazine specialises in with the kind of décor you'd expect to find in a Victorian gin palace."
And bombing it would still be deemed illegal and immoral?
From citing Amy Winehouse as a typical Dublin Castle turn to "curious cabaret act The Indelicates" (presumably the writer thinks the Dresden Dolls are some sort of Jim Rose Circus Sideshow freakery)
I saw the Libertines at Filthy's. I was too drunk and they were too messy for me to care at the time. Tiny place that. Good Guinnes. Yah, Shane MacGowan does or did own it.
The Hopeless Wanker is rubbish. head to the Buffalo Bar just down the road for a better venue.
... is 3rd? :)
I'm from Croydon, and it isn't even the best gig venue in Croydon. That is probably the Green Dragon.
As for The New Cross Inn, I was there on Sunday afternoon, really didn't like it at all.
it seems as if the Guardian have decided to admit there are decent pub venues in South East London, so they don't seem like they never go South, but then fail to actually scout them out and just do a google search to find them instead.
because the Streetfighter Alpha machine at Nambucca was replaced with a dodgy MAME machine that costs more to play last year. Still a good venue though.
The Dublin Castle shouldn't place here (because beer is too pricy, the lineups are usually pretty poor), and neither should The New Cross Inn (both times I've been in there the service was shocking).
Subsitute The Dublin Castle for The Luminaire, The Black Sheep in Croyden for The Good Ship in Kilburn, The New Cross Inn for The Fox in Lewisham and you've got a good list.
It's in Holloway. Why they insist on trying to ally themselves with the utter shithole that is Archway is beyond me. Holloway's nicer for sure. There's no fucking monolith for one thing.
otherwise The Holloways would've been called The Archways.
or the website or something?
Otherwise the Guardian are just being useless. N7 = Holloway. Factoid. I used to live on Tollington Way. :D
They seem to utterly ignore how much of a nice place it is to be in.
I have no idea how they ended up with this list
not just cos I promote there
which makes it make a lot more sense. still not great
