Well this is mostly appaling...

since-last-summer [Edit] [Delete] 22 replies 03:41, 24 June '05
I'm sure you've all read this already but, bleurgh...

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/news/05-06/23.shtml

The thing I hate most about it is how Nike so desperately wanna become a part of 'youth' or 'alternative' culture to the extent of appropriating iconic images from it, but can you imagine if it was the other way round? Like if some independent band wanted to use the 'swoosh' to make a statement; they would be so sued. It's totally one way, absorbing art til it's just a dumb slogan...

This is an unbelievably crass campaign by Nike. I should have been boycotting their products already, I will be doing so now.

Even if he sues, Nike still gain their 'cool' points. Big-name skaters need to sort their heads out and start denouncing/boycotting the fuckers. Hit them where it hurts innit.

        Yeah Nike are scum.

Luckily I never buy their products.

Actually the most ridiculous use of 'the Tick' I've seen is in Islamic and Jewish headwear with it on. "Stop putting a fucking dollar sign on everything" never seemed more true than witnessing coporate sponsorship of relgion...

Or indeed that Nike is the name of a Greek goddess (of victory).

The woman who came up with it got paid pittance apparently. Oh, those Nike people, just a fairytale of love and peace aren't they.

Oh balls, I hate Nike as much as anyone but get a grip - its advertising. Its no worse than any other branded product, including Dischord itself.

Nike is making an effort to break into the skateboarding market (again) and so is obviously going to use images that provoke recognition within that target market.

And i'd quite like a pair of dunks

              • Re: Well this is mostly appaling...

rspce, you've justified the reasoning behind Nike's actions, but that doesn't make it right. And Nike IS worse than Dischord. If you can't see this, maybe find out more facts.

If the skater market swallows this one it's a fucking disaster, imo.

                • Re: Well this is mostly appaling...

The skater market has already swallowed it - just look at the Nike team. Even Consolidated can't stop Nike this time, they've learnt from they're mistakes and it looks like they're here to stay - rightly or wrongly.
As a skateboarder its plain to see that most kids dont give a flying one for anti-globalisation etc or where the advert they're looking at got ripped off from - they just want the latest kicks.

                    That's depressing.

                    • Re: Well this is mostly appaling...

Of course it is, but all I meant was its no different to the marketing campaigns used by Vans, Airwalk, DC, Etnies etc. Vans is a multi-billion dollar company, the same as Nike, and has used punk/metal imagery for years.

The fact is there is a shit load of money to be made from people who want to look like they skate, and in the end what is the difference between them buying some Rowleys or some Dunks?

                      • Re: Well this is mostly appaling...

Yes. You're right. I don't know anything about the track record of Vans, Airwalk, DC, Etnies etc. so I guess I can't really compare. I'm sure it sucks though!

If corporations insist on co-opting the aesthetic of rebellion for use in marketing, I guess 'boring' is the new 'punk'. Oh shit Gap already thought of that. Arrrgh nowhere to run. Nooooooooooooooo

I feel I should add that skaters have always worn Nikes, especially in New York - which is why Nike relaunched the Dunk as a skate shoe, even if people mostly used Air Jordans back in the 80s.

Most skaters aren't as 'hardcore' as Dischord even if they did grow up with their local HC scene.

Of course, this sort of thing is hardly new. The great composers of the classical era were paid lackeys of the various aristocratic families of the time (equivalent in their day to the multinationals today). This didn't necessarily stop the music being good, although doubtless there were some people who received patronage when they shouldn't, and didn't when they should, just as the wrong people sometimes get famous today. It's difficult to accuse Bach of selling out, though.
