Let's not hold back or be pretentious

I will begin with

Talking Heads - This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68KLZCVFDQI

You must be reading my mind or something. I've been playing this song about 10 times a day for the last week or so. Possibly an exaggeration, but you get my point. Its fucking crushing. I think if I met someone and I genuinely loved them I'd play them this. It makes me so emo, its disgusting.

    • I'm amazed at the swiftness of the reply

but, to be fair, I didn't throw it out there for no reason. If you listen to the lyrics, it is really beautiful.

      • Yep

Of course there are plenty of other, as the rest of the thread is demonstrating, but this is the one for me at the moment. Its so good that its depressing.

            http://youtube.com/watch?v=1OLA6AiZlVw

God I love him and everything he does ever.

            • Oh god even better

              Tom Waits - Kentucky Avenue

              http://youtube.com/watch?v=GvZK8Wl7RQ8

Best song about young love ever
"i've got half a pack of lucky strikes
              so come along with me"

Makes me go all funny inside.

          • i thought of this when i spotted the thread title

it's so beautiful. i've never heard a song that can make me feel so happy and loved up, yet heartbroken at the same time.

            poptimusgrime | 31 Mar '08, 02:43 | X
            • I haven't

quite worked out how the thread works, but if you're talking about Naive Melody, then totally.

It's just a mixture of honesty, beauty and desperation! The song is a double edged sword (and other cliches...)

              ashstreath85 @poptimusgrime | 31 Mar '08, 03:04 | X
          • Slim Whitman - Rose Marie

            http://youtube.com/watch?v=4dbiWj6DhyM
Old fashioned yeah, but it's a simple, great love song.

            cowcow | 31 Mar '08, 02:43 | X
          • Oh well now there ain't one that's the most beautiful

Uncertain Smile by The The comes close though.

            Other contenders:

Eels - PS I Love You
Bob Dylan - Shelter From The Storm
Yo La Tengo - Our Way To Fall
            Architecture In Helsinki - Fumble
            Regina Spektor - Us
Matt Berry - One Track Lover
Kings Of Convenience - Gold In The Air Of Summer
            Animal Collective - Purple Bottle
            The National - Slow Show
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Into My Arms
            Van Morrison - Sweet Thing

...off the top of my head. Oh, and don't let anybody make you think otherwise, because Maps is incredible.

            • The whole MASSIVE LIST format

              slightly devalues the 'beautiful' element.

But I have to give you 'Sweet Thing' by VM. Lovely stuff.

              • It's not like there's a limited amount of beauty in the world

Nobody's going to walk into the studio when a band's about to record their next album and go, "Sorry guys, I'm afraid that we've reached the maximum number of beautiful, heartfelt songs allowed in this life."

And beauty's in the eye (or in this case, ear) of the beholder, regardless.

                • Each to their own

If someone has a spurt of beauty, who am I to argue?

                  Also,

I have to mention Leif Erikson by Interpol.

            poptimusgrime | 31 Mar '08, 02:53 | X
            • maps is classic

'Look for me (I'll be around)' by Neko Case and 'Such a small love' by Scott Walker both spring to mind.

But 'Saturday' by Sparklehorse is probably the purest lovesong I know. So that wins.

and I think 22 is the age that it dies. I always thought thats what it meant. I quite like the 22 bit, though I really do like post rock songs titles. Just finished writing one called "5'000'000'000 is 5 thousand million not 5 billion." and see if you can say it out loud.
