Smallest Gig | Biggest Band
I was reading the Twilight Sad thread and thought that the biggest band I have seen in a small venue might be Hell is For Heroes at the Barfly, or maybe GoodBooks there too.
I am assuming there are a few DiSers who can beat that? Biggest band at the smallest Gig?

Klaxons at
Korova in Liverpool, was about 50-100 people there max. I know my girlfriend saw Jamie T in a Barfly and was one of only 2 people there.
Dillinger Escape Plan
at The Orange Box in yeovil.
!
I hate you :(
I saw dillinger at Cardiff Barfly
It was fucking intense. Not sure how the size compares to this orange box though.
D.E.P
in the basement @ rock city!
I saw Klaxons at Moles in Bath
madness.
..
I've got some mates that went to that gig, apparently they were awful though.
I don't like the band that much
but that night was quite a show. Maybe because of how mad the crowd were in a small venue.
i went to that gig too
they were awful.
I went to that gig too!
It was fun
i went to that gig too
they were middling
Probably
At The Drive-In at the 13th Note Cafe in Glasgow. Lucky if there were about 20 or 30 people there!
I would kill for that gig.
Easily, at least, a few children.
They pretty much
blew the place up. Pretty intense.
amazing
i envy you
If i hear one more person say they saw ATDI in a tiny venue
i'm going to die of jealousy
i saw at the drive in
at the roadhouse in manchester, teeeeeeny place, id say 50 people ther max
franz ferdinand
at covent garden rough trade, just before Take Me Out was released.
although
i was stuck behind a rack of CDs and couldn't actually see them. i didn't know what they looked like until i saw them on TOTP a week or so later.
Oh god yeah
Mine would have to be Franz Ferdinand too. I was at their first ever gig and it was in someone's bedroom!
:D
that's amazing.
Did he leave early
Do to a really small food column?
probably
the parsonage. theres like 30 of them.
OH WAIT, IS THAT NOT WOT YOU MEANT???
a few:
the shins at leeds cockpit, 50 people
fugazi at leeds met - 100-150
iggy at atp - little enough to get right to the front with ease
biffy in preston - 17 people!
What about
Pearl Jam at the Astoria? in relative size, that must be good.
Killers at the ICA on valentines day a few years ago.
And whoever went to see radiohead at 93 feet east and U2 at London Astoria surely wins this...
since when did
leeds met only hold 100-150?!
and i was at that shins gig and there was a hell of a lot more than 50 people.
i smell bullshit
There's a pretty strong whiff over here too...
I presume the Biffy gig was the one at The Venue, which WAS brilliant and very intimate, but had much more than 17 people there; it was a total sell-out. 300-400 easily.
For me... probably Idlewild at The Mill in Preston; maybe 200 people there. Lovely.
I saw
Idlewild in America in 2005. There were literally about 30-40 people there. It was very intimate. And only cost a fiver. Bargain.
how much time did you spend counting audience members ?
the killers at fibbers in york
not long before hot fuss came out
GoodBooks are hardly MASSIVE?
and they did that string of Buffalo Bar gigs last year. That's much smaller than the Barfly.
I've seen The Kooks with support from The Automatic,Mystery Jets with support from Jamie-T and Jack Penate with support from Adele in a 200 capacity venue. Those were cool.
TW Forum ftw!
no..
because they reallllly don't count as big. If you have them as big I'll have mummra at the twells forum when they used to either sing songs about or attempt shit post rock.
oh and..
feeder, electric soft parade and lost prophets I've seen there. I'm sure I'm missing a few.
oh..
songs about tea.
..
the libertines at the tw forum was a good'un..
radiohead at shepherds bush..
the music (not really massive I guess..) at a pub in kensal rise..
The Killers
at The Cockpit in Leeds, also not long before Hot Fuss came out.
BUT SRSLY
in 2000/01, well my first year at uni anyway, in aberdeen, i saw sigur ros and godspeed play together at the lemon tree in aberdeen.
hmm
i saw red hot chili peppers in some small club in kings cross once. about 100 people there? not sure. but that's a HUGE band in a small, small place.
they were pretty good i thought.
YES
probaby deerhoof
at 13th note, glasgow. about 15 people there or something. 2003/4ish
There is a youth club
in Katwijk, Netherlands, really small capacity. I saw The Hidden Cameras play there once, and a couple of years later Apples in Stereo.
I've been to a few house shows too, although they aren't huge artists. I've seen Jessica Bailiff play in someones living room, with about 15 other people present. Same story with Viking Moses, Ramona Cordova, Machinefabriek (although I missed his set :( ).
Also Rivulets just played at a squat in my town - http://photos-a.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sctm/v203/36/0/513259582/n513259582_305664_1482.jpg
Oh I've thought of another one
Oasis, on Avenham Park, Preston, they were on the small stage back in the early 90s before they broke. I thought they were arrogant cocks who would never make it..... :(
Well you were half right!
:o)
The Killers at Leicester Charlotte
Coldplay at the Barfly.
muse and at the drive-in
at southampton joiners arms, each time about 50-100 people there max.
I saw that muse gig
It was the day of my physics GCSE
i saw
muse in a pub in chelmsford, 80-100...
they were terrible....
they have got better, would have been 98ish...
said pub now flats :-(
Rage Against The Machine
at the old Zodiac in Oxford. About 400 people, and only a fiver to get in. I have also seen Anthrax at the same venue.
Arctic Monkeys
Subway Cowgate, Edinburgh. £4.00
felt old then, feel even older now.
muse/soulwax at the charlotte in leicester
franz ferdinand at york fibbers and bloc party again at the charlotte playing to 8 people, including me and my sister!
embarassingly
i saw lostprophets at the garage in glasgow fairly recently
some really bad ones
james blunt in hillsborough park in sheffield
my band supporting the feeling at the fez club. our first gig as well. i had no idea who they were and why we were booked.
Gallows
in Aberdeen Tunnels, literally an underground tunnel, with about 100 people. This is back when they had credibility and were very good (i.e pre-orchestra of wolves re-release)
Not that I'm particularly a fan
but what a wanky, pretentious comment that is.
haha
I felt left out from the people saying they'd seen Muse live back in '78 in a shed with their grandad and a cat.
Shellac
in Evershot village hall.
Remains my best gig ever.
I saw them
at the Hope and Anchor. You can't really go wrong with a Shellac gig.
Are we talking about bands that go on to be big, or bands that are already big but playing in a small venue?
I saw Smashing Pumpkins at Raymonds Revue Bar. I was literally struggling to stay awake.
Oh
and Nirvana, Soundgarden and Tad at Soas.
ha ha
did billy get his tits out!
^ You win
--
cock, that was meant for Shellac
--
cock, that was meant for Shellac
--
heh
that's cool I knew that was to me.
Was a truly astounding gig.
Imagine a village with a population of 203. Then imagine the wooden rickity village hall that such a village would possess. Then imagine Polly Harvey taking your ticket on the door (for it was when she had just recorded Rid of Me) and then selling raffle tickets later. Then imagine Albini and co proceeding to destroy your eardrums and sternum with a wall of...I dunno, something beyond sound though.
Was pretty good!
^^
can i just say that this sounds like one of the best things in musical history!
God i wish i could have been there!
Dude that's unreal
I can only imagine what the locals must've thought.
errrrrrm
Bloc Party supporting Span at Tunbridge Wells Forum.
Mclusky with Jarcrew in support at the Freebutt. Also Maccabees at the same venue.
Mclusky are hardly 'big'.
Not only are they really poor, I reckon they get spotted about once every never.
that
Mclusky gig was amazing at the freebutt! One of my faves I think...
are
The Twilight Sad big then?
Do you mean seeing big bands in small venues now, or before they were big? If it's the latter then there's loads...
Explosions In The Sky at the Arts Cafe in Aldgate was a good one, I think it was their 1st UK gig and was put on by some mates. Bloc Party also played there in their early days, well the Angel Range did. And Ship's A Going Down, they were huge!
I miss the Arts Cafe, it was fantastic for gigs!
The Shins at Arts Cafe
was a great gig. First tiem I eevr saw them - was very excited. I remember they seemed amazed anyone had heard the new album (Chutes Too Narrow had just come out)!
paul mcartney
in front of about 100people.
interpol at the social in nottingham.
The fucking Scissor Sisters
support Zoot Woman at the Brum Academy 3, playing to like 20 people.
Yourcodenameis:Milo
Prince Albert, about 30 people were there, one of their last gigsl
Pigeon Detectives (friends bday)
Audio
I was at the Prince Albert gig,
it was very good, hope they'll have something similar on this year during great escape.
Here lies hoping!
I missed the Liars performance in the fish shop though :(
hmmm
i'm old so:
rolling stones @ shepherd's bush empire (it was an announced on the day thing and the tickets were a tenner!)
smashing pumpkins w/ the verve @ cardiff university
foo fighters @ ulu
rem w/ billy bragg @ the borderline
the hold steady @ the borderline
atd-i @ upstairs at the garage (was it upstairs????)
etc
oh and
i suppose some people would care that i saw art brut at the archway tavern - 3rd or 4th gig - they were rubbish.
Funeral For A Friend at the Boat Race (RIP)
in Cambridge.
,
john renbourn in the palace loft in athlone with 6 other pensioners, i was on my own none of my friends wanted to go.he played for two hours and there was a raffle half way which i found hilarious
-
i saw keane soundcheck at the dublin castle in about 2002-3
Les Savy Fav at the Old Blue Last
Yes yes yes yes yes.
lucky
beyatch.
anyone know if LSF are going to be touring around their atp pitchfork show?
They're doing a gig in Kingston
the day before.
...tempted.
You gonna go?
Doubt it
Too examy.
bloc party and the libertines (with pete)
on different nights at the indie night in one of the bars at university (reds at northumbria uni).
other bands that play were usually stuff like golden virgins and a black sabbath tribute band for halloween
I went to this regularly.
The best band I saw at it was The Dears, by a mile. Bloc Party were the biggest, also saw The Zutons unfortunately.
My best is The Killers supporting Stellastarr* at Newcastle Global Cafe, saw Razorlit in there too but they don't count. Also saw Maximo Park in The Cumberland Arms in Newcastle on the 'Coast Is Always Changing' single launch. That's my favourite one.
errr
kaiser chiefs at Joseph's Well I think
or the Arcade fire at Liverpool Academy
Does
it really count if it was before they got anywhere?
cos in that case. I saw We Are Scientists in a small pub. And Guillemots in a small Fopp store.
The Killers and Kaiser Chiefs in a tiny venue on the NME tour a few years back also.
ffaf
birmingham barfly
mcr rock city
Arctic monkeys
At the botanique in Brussels, About 50 people there maybe. It was before they released I bet you look good on the dancefloor.
Jamie T at the Peel in Kingston
a few years back. He was supporting Vincent Vincent and the Villains.
Muse
at the Borderline, and Coldplay supporting Terris at the Concorde in Brighton
mcr supporting
taking back sunday only sold out because of them haha
My little cousin goes on about that gig all the time
I laugh just because I told him I saw MCR at Academy 2 in Birmingham a few years before.
If I had three hands, I could have counted the amount of people there on them.
They were shit then...and that was around their "heavier" first album?
that was at brixton...
'
I saw Ash at the Peel
on their pre Free All Angels warm-up tour. Sweat dripping from the ceiling - nice.
Also got free tickets to see Coldplay in Abbey Road studios around X&Y, which I suppose was around 50-75 people. Celebrities spotted include Kanye West, Michael Eavis, Jamie Cullum and Al Murray. Most notable for Chris Martin chatting up someone's mum in the audience, much to her son's dismay.
The Peel...
...has strippers!
Yes!!
yup, but
that's the other half of the peel
I saw the Music in the peel before their first album.
rather good it was.
Frank Black at the Social in London
That was pretty special. Other than that I don't think I've seen many big bands in small venues.
Manic Street Preachers
supporting Flowered Up at Manchester International in 1990. Back in the days when everyone would sit on the floor waiting for the bands. Only one person stood up for MSP!
Do people still not do that?
Well, apart from me that is?
Kasabian
at the barfly
Kate Nash at Gramaphone.
Radiohead
OK, so mine was Radiohead at the YMCA in Chelmsford. A fair while back now. There was about 19 people there and we paid £1.50 to get in and sat on the floor to watch it. I An amazing night they were brilliant even then. As you can imagine my favorite pub story as well.
Bloc Party
at Concorde 2, Brighton.
It was a private gig for paying members of Bloc Party website :)!
I'm sure many wont believe me
but mine is Nirvana at The Southern Bar in Edinburgh, playing unplugged to about 20 people!
It was a Sunday evening the day after (or two days) their Calton Studio show.
I'm not a fan of the band and only headed along as The Joyriders were playing.
Flyers were given out with The Joyriders with very special guests at the Nirvana show, with the gig kicking off in the afternoon.
The place was full of Nirvana T shirts when we got there.
Joyriders played but announced the guests weren't turning up.
My memory is fairly vague but I think they may have played a second set a bit later but I know we were still boozing at about 9.30.
My friend who was driving wanted us all to head back but the "word on the street!" was that the band were still coming.
Eventually they wandered in setting up to play a short acoustic set, including "Polly" the only one I remember.
I can't say I was impressed but it's a good tale to dine out on!
Around the same time I also caught Green Day playing to about 10 people and a dog at Edinburgh Art College but they weren't fanous at that point.
Guillemots
with two other people at a poorly advertised instore. One of them was my friend. My mum's well jealous now!
I suppose
It was snow patrol, at the sadly missed venue in Edinburgh. There was probably 50 people there max, it's most memorable for me because of the girl who asked "would you like to come back to my place for meaningless sex?"
radiocoxon
radiohead at 93 feet east by some way, but second maybe Graham Coxon in the basement of some camdem pub, he played an acostic set for his forum at christmas a few years ago.
hmm
The White Stripes in a room of about 250 people
Trail of Dead with about 70/80 people
or SFA at a Radio 1 session of 100 competition winners
David Bowie/Tin Machine at some small niteclub
JAMC with about 25 people. But this was right after Psychocandy was released so they weren't famous then.
radiohead at 93 feet east springs to mind...
.
Umm..
I saw Bloc Party up in Canada and there was about 75 people, max.
rolo tomassi
supporting 65daysofstatic like... last year i think it was, in preston... they played to about 10-15 people, and were fully awesome despite the singer leaving before the last song cos she had laryngitis apparently.
not exactly arena-fillers granted, but i felt/feel privileged to have been present.
Beastie Boys
I saw the Beastie Boys at the ICA in London a couple of years ago. I won 2 tix on Radio 1. It was guest list only. I'd say there was 200-300 people there.
los campesinos at the joiners
:(
The Foo Fighters
@ C2 in Brighton last summer. Less then 200 people watching.
MCR at Koko
My little brother won tickets from the BBC so we all went up. They sucked live.
Editors supporting Billy Bragg a few years ago
There were about 30ish people watching.
muse
i saw muse at a small pub (the railyway inn) in torquay with a couple metal guys and maybe a fisherman or two. i think i have the set list somewhere.
Mogwai @ the Cab Vol 2005
Don't know how many the Cab Vol holds in Edinburgh but they did play
My Father My King
the full 25 min feedback Classic
went home happy
bright eyes at the boogaloo bar
sum41
supporting nashville pussy at the garage.
yeaaaaaah. sum41 were on 1st. followed by mclusky. ace!!
coldplay at the joiners - twice
the killers at the fez bar, reading.
Arctic monkeys
in Subway Cowgate in edinburgh (which is now closed) there must've been about 30 people there but everyone went made when they played "bet you look good...." the bouncers didnt know what was going on.
It was priceless! Needless to say everytime i've seen them since has been a bit of a let down.
ok not cool but
razorlight and kooks, both under 100 people at recording studios because i won two competitions
pixies
at the forum was pretty cool too (just to get some cred back!)
mogwai
upstairs at the garage supporting ligament at their last gig. Rubbish.
Radiohead
At the Krazy House in Liverpool. 1992, Creep had just been released. It was £2 in.
The Shins at the L2....about 50 people there
I know
Marilyn Manson played the Krazy House time ago. One of those gigs everyone claims to have been at, doubt many actually were.
MCR at the Night & Day in Manchester
The Killers at Carling Academy 2 in Liverpool.
And Kaiser Cheifs supporting Ordinary Boys and Dogs Die In Hot Cars at the Carling Academy 2 in Liverpool. About 10 people there when Kaiser Chiefs played and couldn't have been much more than 50 by the time Ordinary Boys came onstage.
Oh and the Fratellis in the basement of a pub in Manchester during ITC 2005.
reading some of these stories are fascinating
I havnt been going to gigs regularly for long enough to experience that many rare early gigs. Suppose there have been a few from the last 3 or 4 years though.
Most notible in terms of current status would probably be Klaxons at Lennons in Southampton.
^
Thats amazing, i read about that! Radiohead in the Krazyhouse! Best thing ever...
...
and 2 for drinks as ever I hope
ahh the krazy house.
mmmmm
[drifts into strange hazzy land]
muse
first gig in australia, around the time of the single release of Uno - small pub gig.
bright eyes at the boogaloo.
The Feeling
at York Fibbers, embarrasingly enough. Oh, and Arcade Fire at Maida Vale Studios- that was fucking excellent, although really surreal.
black rebel motorcycle club
in birmingham academy 2 for their howl tour...amazing
is Bright Eyes big?
saw with only about 25 people there. it was cute: we all sat cross-legged on the floor :)
what year was this?
oh god like 1999 i think..?
but really can't be sure..you know my fruitloop mind
no actually 2000 i'd say
i h8 u
why? because i'm an old hag?
yes
also, you saw omg conor omg omg.
one time i saw conor standing
all lonely outside of his tour van. i didn't even try to go talk to him and sex him even though my then-boyfriend was encouraging it. ella=loser.
The Libertines at the Roadhouse
Feeder at the Fleece in bristol
(and the pop factory - does playing the same song 4 times count?)
Ryan Adams at Bush Hall (omg)
"Ryan Adams at Bush Hall (omg)"
2006?
yuh
I think I was behind you in the queue actually.
rilly?
i was stood with jamie summers. i'd never met him before. that show was just about the best thing ever, except maybe the borderline the following night. but only because he made up a song about a conversation we were having :D
DROOOOOOOOOOOOOP
Also Mogwai
at a club in Kingston with about 30 people and Foo Fighters at Kings College.
mentioning me
isnt really a namedrop but cheers
I was there too
just behind the piano. Great gig esp strawberry wine, but the borderline the next day was better...
Ryan Adams at...
...Minge Hall was shit. I should have sold my tickets on ebay.
good old Lincoln once had a student union,,,,
that had a capacity of about 200.
I saw Editors AND We Are Scientists there on the SAME BILL.
...ahhhhh those were the days!
most have been a lot better
but here are my two:
Editors and the Kooks at Birmingham barfly a few years ago, the kooks were awful, even then.
and bloc party at leeds cockpit this christmas.
Most of mine revolve around the Fleece in Bristol
About 300 capacity. Seen Muse there (headlining), James (ditto), Klaxons, Kaiser Chiefs (bottom of a bill of three), The Hives (ditto).
And Keane at The Louisiana (about 100 capacity). Also saw The Libertines there (supporting The Vines).
32456
"Also saw The Libertines there (supporting The Vines)."
2004 wrightylew would've liked to be with you.
Ash
at the whitley bay dome. about 100 people, then at leeds ash gave the good people of whitley bay a shout out on the main stage. good times.
Enter Shikari
at the Fountain pub in Tottenham, sometime in 2004. It was a battle of the bands, they were there with their dad, and demanded to play before my boyfriends band so they could be driven home before it got too late! There was no one there except mates of the other bands in typical battle of the bands style. Enter Shikari came last because they only had their dads vote.
I just remembered some more...
Keane at Water rats just before they were signed (I wasn't a fan).
Mystery Jets at a Pure Groove instore.
Editors
bottom of the bill supporting People In Planes and Oceansize at the Islington Garage.
MCR in the Astoria when Helena had just come out.
Biffy Clyro at the Kerrang! Day Of Rock, and Buk And Skit festival twice.
Aiden/Enter Shikari at the Kingston Peel/Reuben at Banquet Records.
Deftones at the London Scala.
Fall Out Boy/Fightstar at the Islington Academy.
Its all recent, but vaguely impressive.
i was at that Oceansize show
Editors were probably the best thing there :(
They were impressive
but even then I thought they sounded like Joy Division/Interpol.
Oceansize were pretty good that night, its was the Music For Nurses tour and they opened with One Out Of nONE - that was pretty fucking incendiary.
i proper don't like Oceansize
that show was their last chance with me and i was bored sillllllllly.
Supergrass
at Gloucester Guildhall, just before Richard III came out, and Ash at Hewell Road Sports Club in Redditch. I think their were people playing darts in an adjoining room.
yeah
Arcade Fire at Porchester.
Hold Steady at Hoxton Bar & Kitchen
Spoon - Cargo.
Hmmmm
Interpol on NME tour 2002 or something.
More early gigs would be Killers and Bloc Party at Manchester Academy 3.
Lost Alone when they were called Intentions of an Asteroid to about 10 people at Manchester Roadhouse.
I forgot about that
I saw interpol at the cardiff barfly they were really good
Back in the day...
Edward's No 8 in Brum; Radiohead (supporting The Frank and Walters), Smashing Pumpkins, Pavement, The Verve, Mazzy Star, Sugar. At Burberries in Brum; Throwing Muses and the Pixies on the same bill (so good that I went to the Town and Country club on the weekend to see them again. Bought a ticket on the door.)Also Ride and The Sugarcubes at Burberries. Both venues 300 at a push.
Biffy at the oh bar
last year was pretty cool, probably about 100-200 people?
Razorlight at the wedgewood rooms, 200 peopleish.
Fightstar at the Jailhouse in Coventry, think that's about 200.
Saw Wheatus last year in a Walkabout in Manchester, about 30 people there!
i was there for razorlight
despite the fact they are now shit, i loved them in first album times.
Interpol apparently played at the Freebutt in Brighton
In about 2001/2002. I wish I had been there.
I saw Lethal Bizzle and Klaxons play at Camden Barfly which was pretty cool, and Bloc Party at the West End Centre in Aldershot.
My friend saw Radiohead play at the Wulfrun in Wolverhampton, which I think is a 150/200 capacity venue.
Mistake
Apparently only 150 people were invited to see them. The venue website says it's 1100 capacity?
I've never been there so I don't know.
it has a few different-sized rooms
No
The Wulfrun is the 1110 capacity room. I saw Radiohead there in 1993. It's in the same building as the Civic Hall(2000+) and the Civic Bar (200ish maybe but i've never seen a band in there.) What's this invite only gig? When was that?
anyway..
i saw the killers support stellastarr* at the joiners i think in 2001?
James Brown at the forum
razorlight at the garage
pidgeon detectives at metro, oxford street
cribs at the brudenell
forward russia at aldershot west end centre
Do Forward Russia even count?
I've seen them in a practice room.
you win
that night there were only about 40 people to be fair.
There was just me there apart from the band.
I wouldn't say I won, though. They weren't very good at the time.
Oasis
supporting The BMX Bandits in 1993. Must have been about 50 people there, mostly at the bar. They were really shit.
Arctic Monkeys in Sheffield supporting (haha) Milburn. Probably about 50 people there, including some A&R men saying "this lot are rubbish", etc...
Saw Primal Scream loadsa times in tiny clubs before they got quite big.
Nooooooooooooo
The BMX Bandits are amazing!
Oasis aren't.
radiohead @ 93 feet east
i was there... honest. front row. centre... :)
i swear.. look...!
http://amadeeeep.livejournal.com/738173.html
w o w
!!!
d u d e
i know.
(Y)
arcade fire at st john's church
must count. that was good.
also i suppose editors at norwich arts centre in 2005, about a week after their album first came out, they were pretty boring
Biffy
supporting tetra splendor in trhe small room in coventry colly. and then again playing with future kings of spain in auntie annies in Belfast the three of them didn't even fit on the stage
EIB
Relatively speaking, it was Even in Blackouts in my living room, about 20 people.
It's John jughead from screaching weasel for those who don't know, the bassist played in The Queers / Rise Against/ Common rider.
Best houseparty ever lol ^_^
coldplay
at the charlotte in leicester. twice. the first time they were supporting terris and there was about 40 people there. second time about 300 people, just after yellow had come out i think.
also at the charlotte, muse and soulwax, biffy clyro at least twice. trail of dead and the hold steady in the small room of the leadmill. forward russia at the attik in leicester (although they're not particularly big). the long blondes at their christmas party at some pub in sheffield a couple of years ago.
Go me!!
Ned's Atomic Dustbin at the Moathouse pub in Alcester, Warwickshire (near Redditch) in 1988, before they released anything. They could probably play the same venue now!
Was that Muse and Soulwax together?
As I saw Soulwax at the Charlotte and remember someone telling me recently that they Soulwax supporting someone around the same time but I'm sure I saw Soulwax headlining.
Also. not long later, Bright Eyes doing a Mercury Showcase with Alfie (someone else?). I left early as Bright Eyes made me dead inside.
Don't think I can rival Hahahahaharoldramis' input to this thread
but I saw The Strokes at the Fleece and Firkin in Bristol, probably about 100 people there, supported by Moldy Peaches. Oh, and if Forward Russia count as being big, I played with them once in front of about 20 people at the Music Box in Manchester.
I saw...
Coldplay at the UEA when I was at High School back in the sticks. I didn't like them all that much, and stood at the front looking bored with a pint. There weren't very many people there - most were in the bar milling about until someone like the Scratch Perverts came on.
It's funny how it all works out eh!
Lostprophets - 1st of 3 supports to earthtone9 at Cathouse
ZING!
Snow Patrol playing to a half-empty QMU at my fresher's week
Muse supporting Skunk Anansie 1999
Pavement
at the Hull Adelphi
^^^^^^^^^^^^^
R.E.M
at some pub in Clerkenwell Green
but it was without Michael's Type
and I wondered in pissed, collected my friends and left, only to be told that R.E.M were in the middle of playing just behind me.
'REM...
but without Michael Stipe.'
lolololololo1lo1l1ol111ol1ol1!!!!!Lol1oal
I haven't read through all the replies...
but I presume someone's already made the inevitable Magic Numbers joke.
no
Muse at the Roadhouse, Manchester
On the Uno single tour, about 30-50 people there from what I remember.
And also, um, Muse with Coldplay supporting at Sheffield Leadmill.
Les Savy Fav at Joseph's Well in Leeds, yonks ago.
Mclusky in tiny place x lots, but I'm running out of steam as they weren't that big anyway. For some completely unfathomable reason.
And that's it.
wank my ego
I saw Bloc Party at their first gig @ King Tuts to about 20 people, 17 of them there to see the support band The Casuals, who were also probably the worst band I've ever seen.
I also seen them there next two gigs there and all the haircuts gradually started to appear.
coldplay
supporting bellatrix at the park, sheffield university, playing to 10 people max.
they were shit, obv.
The Cribs
at The Windmill
Bloc Party when they were called Union at The Windmill
Idlewild @ Northampton Soundhaus when it was tiny, before it was refurbished to about 20 people
er
Supergrass in Cardiff Barfly
Jack White with Brendan Benson at Camden Barfly, SFA at Clwb Ifor Bach and various other small venues around Cardiff.
Hives at Hoxton Bar & Kitchen last year
Macca at the Electric Ballroom
Oasis supporting St Etienne at the Birmingham Insitute
The Who
at Leeds refrectory a couple of years ago - not that small a place really, but I suppose it was for this purpose. I had nearly forgotten about Joseph's Well until I read through this thread. Think I may have seen the Kaiser Chiefs there too.
the drummer/bassist used to fucking serve food at josephs well!
i think i've had chips off him before
at the Bivouac in Lincoln (about 180 capacity)
I've seen the Killers, British Sea Power and The Walkmen, Walkmen was to literally about 10 people, at the end everyone bought and album and the band sat on the stage and signed them all. Twas good.
should note that
the Sea Power/Killers was the same bill.
Youthmovies
In a tiny pub in Coventry, I don't think there were more than 30 people there.
Was that the Tin Angel?
I so wanted to go to that. Couldn't get back home for it though :(
the strokes
and the white stripes at nottingham social...not on the same bill, mind.
Same bands
but at the Louisiana in Bristol.
i put
bloc party on in high wycombe. they were 2nd on the bill, between jarcrew and jetplane landing.
fiver on the door.
didn't sell out.
gold.
iguess i win the prize for most embarassing
the automatic at night and day manchester. and again in liverpool barfly
well
i've got Keane at the Islington Academy in about 2004. Supported by the Ordinary Boys. So....
In my defence, it was free.
the strokes at The lift club in brighton
i reviewed it for college paper- it was their first uk show- i said they were ok but the support band (SHARK) WERE MUCH BETTER. I still believe it to be the casee.
also saw the vines first Uk show at freebutt in brighton with libertines supporting- what a shite fest
My missus was at that gig!
It was only then that she realised that Preston was in her class at school and was a cunt (she had known the latter for a while).
I saw
Mates of State just before they blew up at Tasty World in Athens. It was like a big group of people jammed in a hallway between their set and their merch table. That was their best show I've seen.
i think
Get Cape Wear Cape Fly at the Wheatsheaf in Oxford was probably the strangest. There were literally about 40 people there at most.
Broken Social Scene at Camden Barfly was pretty awesome, can't have been more than about 150 there. Also Thursday at the Zodiac was a surpisingly tiny show for a band with a pretty high profile (at least within their scene).
muse
...in a juice bar in manchester in 1998
...they had long hair and didn't move onstage, but they were still incredible...
...and also at camden Falcon to a handful of people not long after.
i saw radiohead at 93fteast
hi!
also erm
klaxons at the luminaire
foals at the oxford zodiac (rip) supporting youthmovies two years ago, and at the luminaire as well that year, and at loads of little venues actually.
(i guess they count as being 'big' now)
and kate nash at the barfly supporting jeremy warmsley
lolololoolooo
I was at that gig
The oxford one.
brilliant,
wasn't it
claire
were you interviewed by the beeb? and thought it was the single most amazing experience of your life?
RATM
downstairs at Rock City 1992 - about 180 people there
also saw Slayer rehearse with 8 other people in Manchester Apollo
The Clash/The Pixies
The Clash at the Rock Garden pub in Glasgow (downstairs) on their acoustic busking tour of the UK. Probably 150 of us or so, though maybe that doesn't count as they were already 'massive' by then.
The Pixies in a tiny basement of a club opposite the Science Museum, being filmed for a C4 pilot in 1989. I was at the front, right by a couple of cameras. Must have been less than 100 people in the room.
Foals in
a living room in Cambridge. I don't care if you like them or not (expecting backlash). It was still good fun.
Horse The Band + Bouncing Souls
at Pier Pressure/ The Warehouse respectively
Each held no more than 75 people.
No jaw droppers, but quite a few interesting ones...
Travis (supporting Reef) at Newport Recreation Centre in 1997. They bored me greatly after a fantastic set from Cable.
Limp Bizkit (supporting Korn) at Newport Recreation Centre in 1997. At the time I thought they were shit hot and bought their debut album as soon as it came out.
Stereophonics at Afan Lido Leisure Centre in 1997. Everyone in my sixth form was playing their debut album, so I think most of my school went to that one.
Foo Fighters at Newport Recreation Centre in 1997. Fantastic set, on the Colour And The Shape tour.
Muse (supporting 3 Colours Red) at Cardiff Uni in 1999. They blew me away so I bought their debut album the next day.
Muse (supporting Feeder) at Cardiff Coal Exchange in 1999. Only a few days after the 3 Colours Red gig.
Nada Surf and Ed Harcourt at The Social, London in 2002. That was a fantastic bill. The crowd was so small there was a great rapport with both bands.
Good Charlotte (supporting Our Lady Peace) at ULU, London in 2002. I despaired as the inevitability hit me that this monstrosity was going to be huge.
Moby at The Astoria, London in 2002. I won a competition for tickets. He was really surprisingly good actually. I think it was his frenzied enthusiasm that was just so contagious.
Lemon Jelly at 93 Feet East, London in 2002. It was their third ever gig, and the tickets were t-shirts with a free bar at the afterparty following. I lost my mobile that night.
Audioslave at the Astoria, London in 2003. So much promise from the prospect of RATM + Soundgarden, yet so unfulfilled.
Sebadoh at The Louisiana, Bristol in 2003. Only 2/3rds of the band but they played a mammoth set that sticks in my memory as absolutely fantastic from start to finish.
Stephen Malkmus at The Engine Room, Cardiff in 2003. The gig got no promotion as it was a last minute addition to the tour. There could only have been about 40 people there and I had a chat with Stephen afterwards as he seemed to be in no rush to go anywhere.
Andrew Bird (supporting Clem Snide) at St Bonaventures Parish Club, Bristol in 2004. A venue so small, backstage was a sofa literally at the back of the stage. I'd never heard any of Andrew's music beforehand and the entire audience stood jawdropped as his sampled looping starting building and building. Thoroughly nice bloke to talk to afterwards too.
Deathcab For Cutie at The Fleece, Bristol in 2004. The particular highlight was getting them to play Company Calls by shouting "Company Calls", met with a grimace from Ben before a short Mrs Doyle inspired method of persuasion before they played the song. They were also supported by The Cribs. Who were rubbish.
Jamie T at Nambucca, London in 2005. He was first on a bill with Fans Of Kate, Larrikin Love and Kalev which was pretty decent all round!
Liars at 100 Club, London in 2005. They were previewing Drums Not Dead but at such excrutiating volumes it left my ears ringing for days. Angus was a fantastic showman though.
!!! at 100 Club, London in 2005. Awesome gig from an awesome band.
Deerhoof at The Garage, London in 2005. Chatted to the merch guy at the end of the gig and ended up having a few drinks with the band afterwards which was nice!
Broken Social Scene at The Barfly in 2005. What a fantastic band. Still don't understand how they all fit on the stage though.
Starsailor at O'Neills on Wardour street, London in 2006. It was a competition win, so who am I to say no to free band and drink?
Tapes 'N Tapes at The Metro, London in 2006. It seems that it won't be long and you'll be seeing them in places like that again though, unfortunately.
Yo La Tengo at Bush Hall, London in 2006. Not so keen on this band's recorded output, but live their variation is mesmorising.
The Arcade Fire at St John's Church, London in 2007, though I suppose it was more of a unique venue than particularly small. Great after set acoustic set in the street afterwards.
The Rumble Strips at The Windmill, London in 2007, who were very average.
Spoon at The Borderline, London in 2007, who were incredible.
Get Cape Wear Cape Fly at Industry, London in 2007. Another competition win, and a pretty lacklustre set, to be honest.
Jamie Lidell at Soho Revue Bar a few weeks back. Competition win, but great fun!
Los Campesinos at The Windmill in Brixton two weeks today! Hooray!

...
nick olivieri at the camden barfly
bloc party supporting Span in 2001 - worst gig ever and I said to my friend "God help music if this band Bloc Party get big"....
The Paddingtons - Some uni event in Hull - i was hitching a ride with my friend's band Herbie and the Paddingtons supported - dressed in libertines jackets with Squire guitars doing libertines covers. Not that much better now really...
Arctic Monkeys at Manchester Night and Day
supporting the Beat Up. Everybody had of course come for the Monkeys, which made me feel a tad sorry for the headlining act. I did my best to clap and look appreciative despite the fact they really were very mediocre.
Either..
Send More Paramedics in the basement of a house I lived in while at university (though not exactly a massive band I know, but a fun show!)
or
Mars Volta supporting Les Savy Fav at the cockpit in leeds. (LSF won that one quite easily!)
Jesus & Mary Chain
Munki Release party at a small bar (maybe 100 people max) in Seattle. They were pretty awful as well, maybe a couple songs completed without restarting or a major mistake. Still a great experience tho :)
Anthrax at the Oxford Zodiac
Upstairs but it was absolutely rammed, so probably 400-450 people there. Doesn't sound small, but remember that Anthrax were one of the biggest metal bands of the 80s and used to play Rock in Rio in front of half a million people...
RATATAT
in someone's living room last year after they cancelled their gig in Aberdeen, easily one of the coolest things I have ever seen.
In more recent times probably Frank Black playing a small set to about 20 people in Blythswood Square in Glasgow.
Arcade Fire playing the QMU was a pretty special gig as well.
RATATAT
in someone's living room last year after they cancelled their gig in Aberdeen, easily one of the coolest things I have ever seen.
In more recent times probably Frank Black playing a small set to about 20 people in Blythswood Square in Glasgow.
Arcade Fire playing the QMU was a pretty special gig as well.

Razorlight at the Dublin Academy
Maximo Park at the Barfly
Killers at the Barfly
hmm.
HO R TEH RAZORLIGHTS?
i saw trail of dead
in the small room of the leadmill last year. that was pretty cool, because it was a small room but after they got big.
i'm sure there are others but i forget what they are.
/\
also, the arctic monkeys in the same room
///
I was at Crystal Castles semination. Could be considered a gig.
Radiohead
In Newcastle. There was only a few hundred people. Though the bloke blaring out Karma Police next to us in a Jordie accent was annoying. (No offence any Newcastl dwellers).
arctic monkeys at botanique in brussels
50 to 100 people
Quite good in a small venue actually.
Maximo Park at some tiny Wolverhampton bar maybe.
Kasier Chiefs
Jabez Clegg, Manchester.
the rolling stones

august 2003 i mean
having googled it to check lol
Jeff Buckley
In the little Hop and Grape bar at the top at the Student Union building in Manchester.
I win.
Hmmm...
there must be a few.
Franz Ferdinand at the Africa Centre in Covent Garden (a few months before Darts of Pleasure). One of the things that sticks in my mind was turning up at 8:30 and there was no-one in the venue.
Richard Hawley on the second floor of Borders on Oxford Street about the time of his first mini-album. People actually watching must have been about 10.
Arcade Fire at ULU. One of the best gigs I've ever been to.
^
saw both those bands for the first time on both those occasions.
Fell in love with Franz immediately.
AF at ULU = one of the greatest gigs of my life.
^
Wow.
Jeff Buckley @ Hope and Grape
That is.
I saw Eels at the Hope and Grape
I had ticket number 0001
not a massive band
but i saw electrelane at the cumberland arms in newcastle.
also los campesinos and you say party we say die in the cafe bit of the basement of newcastle uni. and metric and jamie t in the global. my best is probably arctic monkeys at manor quay in sunderland before they got really big.
James, Kasabian and Klaxons
I've seen those three at The Wedgewood Rooms. Capacity about 400.
Klaxons
at Moshulu in Aberdeen - it's pretty small
Klaxons...
...in that small room at Sheffield Leadmill, 30 people there max. they were pretty dire mind.
i was going to go to that
my friend's band supported them. i think they supported testicicles the same week. love the hype bands.
your friends band
weren't neon plastix were they? I always quite liked them, and the lead singers dubious mullet...
no
heart yeah.
local support.
do foals count as big? i saw them in leicester in front of about 20 people.
idlewild
at the barfly, but it wasa channel 4 thing and there wasn't many songs.
I was at that
also saw Coldplay, Soulwax and Muse play gigs there too for the same thing.
Ideiwild came on really really late and I missed the tube. Being 15 and having never used the night bus I was terrified.
Radiohead supporting
The Frank & Walters @ Derby Warehouse - no more than 20 people there
Radiohead at 93 Feet East
I Win!!
ermm
MCR at the Islington Academy and also at the Camden Underworld.
Editors at the Garage supporting 'Size
Mystery Jets with 20 other people on a boat in Loch Ness.
MBV @ ICA
and REM @ Brixton Academy. I know you cant really class it as small but by REM's standards these days it is!
Oh and Grinderman @ King Alfred Ballroom
270 capacity. AMAZING!
Another - Flogging Molly @ Camden Underworld
In 2001 i think it was and their first UK show.
I saw
idlewild before captain, third on the bill supporting superchunk, awesomeness
arab strap supporting trembling blue stars at the tiny wag club in london, thired or fourth gig and they all wore suits!
the cribs supporting death cab at ULU, they were fucking awful...
erm not great but i got a couple
CSS in Korova bar in liverpool, maybe a couple hundred people...
Libertines in the Zanzibar in Liverpool. My mate put on the gig and was supposed to only be Doherty but the whole band turned up, maybe 200 people, was an amazing show!
Also, Scissor Sisters in academy 2 in liverpool, pretty wack now, but their first album was pretty ace. Ladytron DJs supported, was a boss show even if they are shit now!
also...
Foals in korova, was busy, boss show
and Youthmovies in Korova...
agesss ago my friends band were supporting Foals in liverpool on their first uk tour and played in this tiny bar, The Magnet, and apparently there was like 10 people including foals themselves there...that would have been pretty good
I saw
Envy at Junktion 7 in Nottingham a few years ago - sure they're not exactly a 'big' band, but it was pretty amazing to see them in such a tiny venue.
Oasis
About three four years ago at Poole Lighthouse. Was a one off warm up pre Don't Believe the Truth. Maybe 1000 people there but considering the scale of the band at the time pretty good i'd say.
.
Pearl Jam at the Esplanade in Southend in 91/92. Few hundred people in there.
i saw muse
play in the zodiac in oxford. joint tour with Cay. 500 capacity odd?
Carter and EMF
Camden Underworld. Bonkers.
Saw Suede, Dodgy and Stereolab (second gig?) at the old Camden Monarch for the record.
Cursive and Appleseed cast
in the Portland Arms, Cambridge. And my band supported. Don't know if they qualify as a proper 'big' band though.
Rival Schools
at the Star & Garter in Manchester, or Lostprophets supporting Pitchshifter and Sheffield Corporation.
bloc party
somewhere in northampton, cant remember the name. about 40 people were there.
yeah yeah yeahs and death cab for cutie at the oxford zodiac.
my mate
saw Cursive, Appleseed Cast, Beezewax and Pylon play josephs well
tears of jealousy.
Biffy Clyro
at my school in 2001. they supported the llama farmers. only around 15 of us there.
The Killers @ Northampton Soundhaus
400 capacity.
Support came in the shape of The Departure and Death From Above (before the 1979 name change)
i saw franz ferdinand
at rough trade (when it used to be in covent garden) when they werent famous. alex poured me a cup of water too.
klaxons first gig
in soho. about 50 people there maybe less.
arctic monkeys at the old blue last. the floor caved in.
Three stand out...
Guillemots and Polar Bear at Jamm in Brixton for a charity gig.
British Sea Power at the Dublin Castle, a few months before 'The Decline...' came out.
But in terms of biggest established band, probably The Breeders at the Water Rats when Title TK came out. Not just a brilliant show, but Dave Lovering introduced them, I waited next to The White Stripes at the bar, and stood next to Jim Reid during the show. The rock stars per sq ft count was very high that evening.
ash the jug of ale
just before they released girl from mars
Razorlight
Are biblically bad, but saw them last year in the back room of a pub in Winchester. No more than 120 people there. It was chaos, and they were shit.
Coldplay in Middlesbrough Cornerhouse
supporting JJ72 :D
Similarly
Radiohead at Windsor Old Trout supporting Sultans of Ping FC
Hmmmmm
I seen Ash a few years ago at an Arts Centre in Downpatrick which there was 250 people at and then they did a second set in a local pub in front of about 75 people.
The Pigeon Detectives
March 2006 Liverpool Academy, probably about 16 people there of which we made up 50%. Kooks late 2005 Liverpool barfly, pretty much the same.
I win the award for most uncool band(s) award.
The Libertines
at the Birmingham academy 2, 2002.
About 100 people there, 10 people dancing.... they were decent, nothing brilliant.
Also saw Editors at Flapper and Firkin for their single launch for Bullets when it came out, they were pretty good...didn't expect them to have massive hits like they did though..
I've seen
Arctic Monkeys @ Bristol Croft (capacity must be 150)
Kings of Leon @ Brimingham Academy 2
Razorlight @ Birmingham Bar Academy
The Cribs seem to be fairly big these days...saw them @ Bristol Loui & it wasn't even half sold out
Amy Winehouse @ Bristol Fleece (around the release of her first album)
thats about it...
oh...
..and Bloc Party @ Oxford Zodiac (downstairs) Just after Banquet came out (the first time)...again, nowhere near capacity
So all these people that saw The Klaxons....when the fuck did they become "big"???
...and I passed on seeing
Death Cab for Cutie @ Bristol Fleece (because they're name sounded awful)...with The Killers as support...bit of a double blunder there
:o(
muse at the tunbridge wells forum in about 1998 (i think)
my band at the time supported them and after we finished people either left or went outside. matt bellamy got really pissed off and stormed off stage at the end of their set back down to their double-decker tour bus! this was for a band doing their first headline toilet circuit tour....money money money.
Coldplay @ Earls Court,
Counting Crows @ Wembley Arena
Take That @ The O2 Arena
Radiohead @ Victoria PArk
Kings of Leon headlining the pyramid stage at Glastonbury.
I'm fairly sure I win.
i saw...
u2 at wembley stadium.

How about
Interpol at the ICA in London.
Sigur Ros at the NFT/BFI screen, London.
Bloc Party at the (defunct) Arts Cafe London.
Foals at the Barfly, London.
yeah, that Radiohead at 93FtEast must win though?
Alright
Offspring @ The Garage
The Cure @ Islington Academy
Foo Fighters @ The Scala
Arcade Fire @ Kings College
All Glasgow ones here
I have seen Coldplay do an instore gig in Virgin Records in '99. Only about 30 people turned up for it
The Libertines at King Tuts when i ended up on stage along with half the crowd.
Primal Scream in the ABC2 a few weeks ago for a T warm up gig.
And then last night i went to see Moby play an accoustic set at Mono on front of about 200, he was better than i had expected. Played some decent covers - Ring of fire, creep & walk on the wild side
i was at that Libertines one
as well as countless ones at King Tuts, namely Bloc Partys first where it was just me, a mate and some other guy there to see them. Also seen their next two gigs there and later found out they had a 'fan club only' one a while after they made it big and due to the fact I don't sign up for bands shit fanclubs I never went. Cunts.
Also seen Kasabian at G2 to about 80 people before Club Foot was released.
There's more but I can't remember just now.
also
The Arctic Monkeys first one in Scotland at The Barly, where I mocked them slightly before the gig in my drunken state.
Good times.
Was it
because they all look about 12?
moby played t glasgow he avalanche store
a few days ago. it was in the metro!
Bloc Party, just before Banquet came out (for the first time)
At that Islington Academy place. About 30 people there

Subways @ Jug of ale (40 people)
Kasabian supporting Chikinki at Jug Of Ale in Moseley (100)
We Are Scientists at Custard Factory in Brum as the old club NME about 25 people there
Wombats at same venue, about 30 people
Twang at some under tunnel outdoor thing in Newcastle, about 50 people and loads of rockers with bikes!
Coudl go on, happy times teh lot of them!
actually it was
about them being 'a bit too young to be singing about what they are'
The bassist agreed, I cite this as the reason he was eventually sacked.
erm
Limp Bizkit in the Sheffield uni Foundry supporting soulfly
not particularly proud of this one, and I was only there cos I was working on free student crew stuffs.
they did have one neat trick whereby the drum tech had wired up the drummers stool with some bass speakers out of a car so that his stool vibrated when he hit the kick drum.
look at me!
my indie cred cock is MASSIVE!

Hmm
Klaxons, Delays, Guillemots all at Joiners in Southampton. British Sea Power @ Cardiff Barfly, that was tiny too. Love a small gig.
Not me
But a friend saw Coldplay supporting someone at TW Forum think was there anyway, thats pretty big/small!
The Cribs
at Coventry Colloseum (back when it was such), not long after The New Fellas was released. They played the tiny left room, there were no more than 20 people there.
I didn't even know the band at the time, I'd been dragged along by a mate. I was a convert ^_^
Supported by Jeffrey Lewis and Black Wire too. Top stuff.
They came back and played the same venue (now Kasbah) a couple of months ago. This time, the main room. There was at least a 1000 people.
At least half the room claimed to have been there when the band asked who had been there at the tiny gig...
The same mate has also seen Hard-Fi at Cardiff Barfly.
The Strokes
Tiswas club @ Don Hills, NYC in Oct/Nov 2000. Maybe 150 people... Where's my prize?
Also, The Libertines at Birm Bar Academy 2002.
Radiohead
93 feet east.
Killers supporting Stella Star.
Adele
supporting Tom Allalone (this time last year) at the Social, near Oxford Street.
oasis at tunbridge well forum
there was probarly 50 people there.
saw coldplay supporting terris at norwich art centre, a few more people but nowhere near sold-out.
pulp and blur supporting lush at la cigalle in paris. jarvis cocker was still a student at the time and i thought they were terrible, it would be a few more years until they wrote babies. blur were also trying to be the stone roses.
i'm showing my age now but i don't care.
that should say...
tunbridge wells forum
Wire and A-HA
not at the same place.....
wire at On The Rocks, small pub in london -preforming Pink Flag - warm up gig. so good.
A-HA preformed 'Take On Me' in a hotel room for me 3 others and a watermellon. (ok, so not 'gig' as such)...such a great song
Hot Chip
+ The Rakes at the Freebutt, Brighton. Circa 2003/4. They replaced the Killers (just before Somebody Told Me came out the FIRST time) at short notice. I reckon the Killers must have turned up at the venue and walked straight out again.
Great gig though. Was definitely before their 1st album came out.
