Jake Thackray
I've been meaning to create a thread about this chap for a while, and I guess Good Friday when most people are out riding donkeys or eating pancakes or whatever isn't exactly the best time. But I think I'll keep bumping this for about a week, as more people need to hear his music! His guitar playing was fantastic, his voice completely distinctive, and his lyrics quite often genius. I think The Blacksmith and The Toffee-Maker is probably one of the best songs of all time, and there are twenty or so other absolutely brilliant songs he wrote.
I'm not sure he would have necessarily approved, but have a listen at his fanmade myspace page : http://www.myspace.com/jakethackray - some songs and videos on there.
For those that know about him already - what's your favourite record/song? It's a shame The Last Will And Testament album was completely raped
by those horrendous arrangements, but I have the "Jake in a Box" box set, and CD4 is absolutely brilliant - 25 demo tracks of just him and a guitar, got most of the songs off Last Will and Testament and some from Jake's Progress (my personal favourite record) too. Well worth getting.
Is there much to get of his that isn't in the box set or on the live album? I guess he must have had more than the 75 or so songs in the box set?
I was thinking maybe of trying to organise a small tribute night in London in the summer, would people actually come to it do you think? I have no idea about his level of popularity!
