all these new modern bands are rubbish
so says Paul Stanley of the popular Kiss tribute band Kiss
We'll change his mind soon enough...
rubbish does he actually mean not wearing any make up and having pyro-technics that cost more than many a better bands yearly earnings? I fucking hate kiss
It's not so much that people should wear make-up and have pyrotechnics but certain indie bands do seem to see things such as showmanship, theatricality and performance as "inauthentic" and somehow "wrong". Which leads to a lot of boring live bands.
on the subject of his comments, i really can't see the angle he's coming from. even though i theres a certain amount of sense in the sentiment that bands sometimes come off as quite elitist. a bit, 'we've got the microphone and you've already paid to get in so why should we bother?'... i'm not suggesting that all bands are like that, but from time to time i gain the impression that they're simply 'turning in a performance'... i think he could've just said 'more effort, lads' without the soundbyte-ish "pathetic state" comment.
but surely he'd have to agree that music shouldn't stagnate. and that bands should push some boundaries and not just let 'an audience find them'...
back to the library with ya!
As you said certain indie bands do put lifeless performances on, but there are a lot of bands out there, many of which are indie bands, that show brillant showmanship without having to resort to cheap tricks and gimmicks
For example the Flaming Lips and Super Furry Animals have both used tricks and gimmicks in their live shows to very good effect.
It's a confidence thing. My band use fuckloads of gimmicks on stage. It's true to say that when our gigs go badly it makes it all ten times worse but it also makes the good gigs that little bit better.
But in a way I like the challenge - i.e. that if you have gimmicks and stage props a certain proportion of people in the audience are always gonna want to write you off as all style and no substance so it pushes you to be that much better than you would have been otherwise in order to win the audience over.
My absolute nightmare would be to be in a band where at the end of your set everyone shrugs, says that was nice and 5 minutes later has forgotten your existence.
Rock And Roll has been dead for a few decades, so the body isn't pretty...
"Bands think they can can get up on stage and strum their guitars and then download it"
is true but those bands are remembered for being live good bands before this, where as when i think of Kiss i just think of make-up, tongues, and fire. I guese i just think this as i dislike Kiss.
for sticking around when all these tosh modern bands were playing. Now who was alive when we formed." (silence)
They put on a S-H-O-W.
It's almost worth going to Download to see them.
set by The Mars Volta last night that consisted of 100 minutes of - effectively - nothingness.
for the London show too - i'll be waiting it out twice by the looks of it. I win the prize for best endurance ever
though clearly he wouldn't be saying that in front of the Icarus Line. Those scrawny little fuckers would kick Kiss' ass big time!
