i'm listening to it again after quite a while. conor oberst will never ever better this album. fact.
but he bettered it twice before it came out
possibly 4 times
yes, some of those new songs didn't sound that good..
Digital Ash is possibly my favourite Bright Eyes album. It nearly made me cry in an airport departure lounge once. It just has some of his finest poetry ("The arc of time, the stench of sex, the innocence you can't protect, each quarter note, each marble step, walk up and down the lonely teble clef... the argument for consciousness, the instinct of a bline insect who never thinks not to accept his fate, that's faith, there's happiness in death...")
Wow. Simply, wow.
D'oh. Destroying Conor's genius with my typoes.
my favourite Bright Eyes song. Mustn't forget that those words are married with a wonderful melody.
But Lifted... is his finest work. There's no doubt about it.
It goes like this:
2. I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning.
=. Digital Ash In A Digital Urn.
5. Fever & Mirrors.
6. Letting Off The Happiness.
1. Fevers and mirrors
3.Letting off the happiness
4. A collection of songs
5. Digital ash
6. Im wide awake its morning
I remember hating this album when it came out, I was a massive fan of bright eyes and preferred 'I'm wide awake, it's morning' by miles.
I kind of suspect that now i'm semi-indifferent to him that opinion might be reversed.
Though I'm not sure why I think that, and I haven't listened to Digital Ash in years now.
I'm glad everyone likes it now, i swear it used to get slated on here when it came out and consistently come bottom of people's bright eyes lists. I'm not much of a bright eyes fan but it always seemed to me to be his finest album/most consistent. I like the drumming on it and Nick Zinner's guitar.
I'd have put it below even Noise Floor on the Bright Eyes albums i'd be most likely to want to listen to list.
It's not a complete failure or anything but it doesn't do a whole lot for me either.
love the way it sounds. it's like a unified whole, whereas i often find his other records pretty fraustrating and inconsistent, and (dare i say it), sixth form.
