Anyone seen this new magazine?

Now, it sounds interesting - girl rock from a girl's perspective etc etc - but the stuff about 'DIY fashion?'.

Then again, I've not seen it.
Then again, I've read Ms Cooper's articles in a certain other magazine and spluttered chunks of disbelief onto my scuffed shoes.
Anyone, like, SEEN it, then?
Sleater-Kinney = great, obviously.

    What's the single?
The album's ace (and although there are some awesome intros, not once does a song fade away into garbage).

What's wrong with DIY fashion? I love stuff like that. Doesn't everyone? This mag looks cool.

        You think?
Is the music press so badly male-centric that it needs an all-gurl front?
        Hmm...
(But I'm gonna check it out all the same)

I was talking to Miss AMP about this last night. I was thinking the same as you perhaps are Mr. Diver, arguing that lots of gender barriers seem self-imposed and that actually girls can rock out as much as boys and sometimes more and that women are takjen every bit as seriously as men inthisdayandage etc. Then AMP said, when was the last time you saw a woman on the front of the NME? And I said - dunno. She's right. Unless it's a one-off diva like Bjork or Peej, pretty much never, unless it's a pretty bassist or something. And apparently there is all this snobbish undercurrent towards girl bands. Hmm. Dunno. So it does all seem sadly male-centric seen from some angles.

yes it shouldn't be marginalised but when you look at how women are represented in music of late especially you can see why things like this happen and all it does is either continues the undeclared war of sexism or put up barriers for people who dont give a fuck who makes the music so its a bad idea me thinks but if it makes stupid sexist NME types (and DiSers as wel) to think twice then maybe we can all co-exist in discordant harmony

These are the categories that women are put in thanks to the last 20 years of crap men journos

            Kooky -Bjork
            swampblues diva - Polly Harvy
            chinzty - Kenickie
Pink pound sex kitten - Kylie
            rock chick - brodie dalle
            sex kitten - erm kylie

well you get my drift - they are the musical kiosk calling cards of assumed male fantasies

Hmm, yeah, the cover thing's true enough (does Meg a few weeks back count?).

I just wonder if this is the correct reaction? The person in question is 'esteemed', and does indeed write for a number of influential publications; can change not begin there? I'm all for the promotion of women's rocking, but this seems a little too, well, sweeping a gesture - like, this is what YOU need to see, ignore the rest cos it is sexist.

Am I making any sense? Probably not.

            • Re: Anyone seen this new magazine?

Well the fact that it's happening has already got us all talking about it. Maybe this kind of strong gesture is just what the lady-doctor ordered.

              • Re: Anyone seen this new magazine?

its interesting trying to listen to a female instrumental band like Electrelane without having those preconceptions EVERY man has inside no matter how much they pretend they were in Huggy Bear or soemthing - without the female voice does their music have the same resonance and identity as similar music made by their male peers - sorry I did Sociology as a degree

I think both men and women are treated as objects to be played with in the music world though - if pete doherty looked like a farmhand he wouldn't have even made an audition for Northside

                • Re: Anyone seen this new magazine?

from what I can tell although its not a women only read, its not supposed to appeal to your average music mag buyer either. So its going to need the support of a high percentage of the small cross-section of music mag buying public..
I think its an interesting and worthy idea, people always need their horizons expanding, but some will be put off and it would certainly need the support of the male audience to be a success.

My girlfriend, who is a hugely into music, would most likely overlook it, because things like articles on knitting are so divisive even within a "femenist" environment, that actually buying a womens music magazine seems somewhat retrogressive.
