Apart from the very obvious like My Bloody Valentine what are some good shoegaze bands to listen to?
may come up with a better form of classification/set of adjectives once they listen to it. Surely general pointers are necessary if you know nothing about a type of music...Classification is usually doomed to some sort of failure, but I think youre being a bit pedantic and restrictive
of what music you are listening to. are you saying that metal/pop isnt a useful divide? It does get a bit pointless the more minute genres become, and nu-rave and such alike is bollocks, but being told something is shoegaze gives you an idea of what a band sounds like. you shouldnt however use it to discriminate against any particular band, ie saying you dont like slint because they are post rock, without ever hearing them.
that is all
a pair of shoes, put them on the ground. then stare at them while swaying gently so that your curtained hair gentle swings.

first 3 Curve EPs to their albums myself. 'Ten Little Girls' and 'Coast Is Clear' are classics.
I do love Moose. XYZ and High Ball Me are two of my favourite albums, but I suppose neither are shoegazey..
in these threads that Vapour Trail by Ride is the best song ever.
Chapterhouse (absolute gods)
I also like Moose.
No shoegaze list should be complete without 'Faith' by The Cure or 'Garlands' and 'Treasure' by the Cocteau Twins.
Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts
that is all.
oh yes !
Early Verve, and more recently, Deerhunter, to these very good lists^
Amusement Parks on Fire are quality - also check out The Fleeting Joys.
But for starting:
Ride - Nowhere
MBV - Loveless
Boo Radleys - Everything's Alright Forever
Slowdive - early Eps
Chapterhouse - Whirlpool
If you can find any old Indie Top 20 albums (ebay) then there's loads to sink your teeth into!
Ulrich Schnauss, M83 do the electronic version quite nicely too
Thogh they are lumped in with shoegaze, I'd call them more 'noise pop' - but ace, nonetheless, esp. first album Shot Forth Self Living, and most of 2nd album The Buried Life.
I did this with a Ride EP too. It was really sludgey. I was a bit disappointed when I played it sped up!
For the new stuff.
Insect Guide are fucking mint.
