Following from the Foals/Math rock thread- Genres! A pain in the arse or a godsend? Goooo!
because when it's tough to describe a band it can provide more specifics.
The irony, however, is that the more specific they get (post-punk and blast beats with anti-funktronica etc etc) the more they confuse people.
but a neccesary evil i think (sometimes)
sub-genres? forget it.
and saying they don't exist piss me off.
yes, liberal minded indie musicians take in a lot of different influences, so sometimes choosing a couple of those to pigeonhole them can be a bit pointless, and yes calling something "pop" is a bit pointless because it doesnt really tell you what it means, etc
but, y'know, if something fits into a recognised convention, why not group it with other things that fit those conventions? saves everyone a lot of time drawing out notataions of beats and explanations of the tonalities of the instruments instead of saying "its big band swing" or whatever
Although I know that you can't really do this accurately but I still do it, I'm anal like that, they have to be defined damn it.
I remember sitting in the back room, and the band were all dressed in suits and trilby hats. I asked what sort of stuff they play, and one of them said 'drillcore'. That was it, no explanation as to what drillcore is or anything. I tried so hard not to laugh.
noisey experimental drum and bass?
oh that's drill n bass
probably the same thing
An alternative evolution would be to fuse trance with other genres such as drum'n'bass, various artists have attempted this but it has still to break into acceptance even in the underground. Frustrated, extreme versions of trance have mutated through gabba into violent fringe genres of "hard-trance" such as terrorcore and drillcore.
They sounded like The Libertines, which makes the whole thing funnier.
that shouldn't be taken too seriously either way
Which is worse for endless, ultra-specific sub-genres: dance or metal?
