Thanks in advance.
It's been longer!
I bought Paul's Boutique and It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold us Back.
I own Wu-Tang Clan's first album.
I'm going to buy Liquid Swords.
I just thought if I listed stuff like Wu-Tang, I would get gangster rap artist recommendations, and I didn't want that. I think it's the worst aspect of hip hop today.
Wutang is one of the best, just got a bad rep for gangsta bullcrap. For me, Wutang Forever is the best all time wutang, its a work of art.
Instead of Mr. Hood get Black Bastards by KMD.
The Low End Theory - A Tribe Called Quest
Viktor Vaughn - Vaudeville Villain
MF DOOM - Operation Doomsday
Nas - Illmatic
Raekwon The Chef (Wu-Tang) - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx
The Roots - Things Fall Apart
Notorious B.I.G. - Ready To Die
it's a cream of the crop kind of selection, right there. Maybe with Clipse - HHNF thrown in for an update on cuban linx.
Guaranteed to be the only album you will ever hear that advocates both the throwing of molotov cocktails at police stations, the sexual assault of high school teachers, and the eating of tofu salads while playing chess on futons within a few tracks.
Also a really really good hip hop album.
its very good indeed
it's gotta be this
MF Doom - Mm...Food
Viktor Vaughn - Both Albums
Madvillain - Madvillainy
Deltron 3030 -(Self Titled?)
Handsome Boy Modelling School - Both Albums
The Coup - Steal This Album
The Coup - Party Music
and the second Quasimoto one
Dr Octagon - Dr. Octagonologist (or whatever its called)
They're all quality but IMHO Run Come Save Me is probably the standout
some pharcyde, ugly duckling, people under the stairs... all excellent
get the 2 cyne albums. quality.
has to be the absolute essential.
also Big L - Lifestyles of the Poor and Dangerous is one of my favourites and probably something you'll really enjoy if you like darker rap like Wu-Tang without wanting to get any of the gangster rap that, as you mentioned, pollutes hip-hop to no end.
Then for something a bit more obscure I recommend Straight Up Sewaside by Das EFX, which is one of my all time favourite rap albums and one that hardly ever gets mentioned anywhere.
and I forgot Redman's 'Whut?! Thee Album'. It's completely light hearted but it's so much fun and a great example of how rap is at it's very best when it doesn't take itself at all seriously. Grand Puba's 'Reel to Reel' album is also similarly humorously awesome. Both are worth checking out.
Dalek - Abandoned Language
Majesticons - Beauty Party
Infesticons - Gun Hill Road
Buck 65 - Square
Sage Francis - A Healthy Distrust
Tes - X2
Anti-Pop Consortium - Arrhythmia
Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus
Not really on the Anticon/backpack tip, but get Organized Konfusion's first two albums - undiluted genius.
sickest song ever.
Supa Dupa Fly/Da Real World/Miss E... So Addictive/Under Construction
but the Deltron 3030 album is amazing.
Del Tha Funkee Homosapien
A Tribe Called Quest
which is Madlib's first proper project. Then pretty much anything on Stone's Throw and check out the following:
Monster Island Czars
J Dilla - Donuts
Madlib - Movie Scenes 1+2
I also like
Raekwon - Only built...
Dead prez - let's get free
Madvillain was a favourite for a while
You'd probably like a tribe called quest
Oh no's album with all the guest spots is good - exodus something? I only have it on the computer
on here. Task Force or anything on Low Life Records is a good starting point for UK hip hop.
Hell hath no fury is the better Clipse album. Willin' is good, but feels more like a bunch of singles and club records. HHNF has more cohesion.
is an excellent post. Particularly the Diamond D and Boot Camp Clik shouts.
I've not seen Company Flow mentioned in any of these posts and if you like Can Ox then they're essential.
A few others that may or may not have been suggested already:
Jeru the Damaja - Wrath of the Math
Freddie Foxxx - Industry Shakedown
King Geedorah - Take Me to Your Leader
Jehst - Return of the Drifter
The Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride II
De La Soul - ...Is Dead
AZ - Doe or Die
Percee P - Perseverance
Pharoahe Monch - Internal Affairs
Lord Finesse - The Awakening
Godfather Don - Diabolique
Cunnynlinguists - A Piece of Strange
Edan - Beauty and the Beat
Vakill - The Darkest Cloud
Gang Starr - Step in the Arena/Daily Operation
EPMD - Business as Usual/Unfinished Business
Notorious B.I.G - Ready to Die
Rob Sonic - Telicatessen
Slick Rick - The Great Adventures of Slick Rick
Mr Lif - I Phantom
Dr. Octagon - Dr. Octagonecologyst
Jeru the Damaja - The Sun Rises in the East
