The Stills - Logic will break your heart - Brilliant
Without Feathers - complete shit
Yeah, you heard right.
you couldn't be more right
Also Kaiser Chiefs (OK, first not great as in "great!" but infinite miles better than the abominable 2nd)
British Sea Power
to The Decline of...
Not got into the new one at all.
decline of and do you like rock music are much more epic than open season
Bloc Party albums are all over the place, imo.
but the b-sides collection from those sessions (often monikered 'Another Weekend in the City) is far, far superior and a more worthy successor to Silent Alarm. Sometimes I just plain think they released the wrong songs as the album proper by accident.
was a total waste of time. Mind you, Whatever People Say I Am wasn't exactly all it was cracked up to be either...
YOU'RE WRONG! WRONG!
'favourite worst nightmare' sounds a lot more advanced than 'whatever people say...', even though, really, it isn't. it just sounds maturer and less generic.
is nothing but dead-eyed extended "funk" jams with no point or purpose. The first one had SOME balls at least.
Favourite Worst Nightmare after about six to seven listens. The best albums are the ones that take time to grow on you.
Where the hell did that come from?
are hot. Shush your mouth.
are great.. really looking forward to the 3rd.
nad then HAHAHA AGAIN
How does that even make sense. Maybe if On Avery Island followed In An Aeroplane Over The Sea.
i reckon i have spent a fair amount on shite second albums
N&T is one of my favourite albums ever
desperate youth is their second album
unless you are saying its shite, and i'll repeat my "nah"
The Primitives (ok I'm older)
Arcade Fire (admittedly its not shite, its just an ok album. Thats all).
First proper album.
then yes, it is. Very.
I prefer it to Desperate Youth.
Return to cookie mountain is a massive step up for TV on the Radio.
It's probably still the last great album I've heard.
franz ferdinand for this.
I thought I'd make that clear.
thats crazy. Return to Cookie Mountain may have a shitty title and front cover but the album is amazing. Wolf Like Me, I was a Lover, Province? how can that be a shite album?? total opposite
Franz Ferdinand also NOT shite.
I agree on Favourite Worst Nightmare. I liked it on first listen, now it makes me cringe. Alex Turner should go solo.
Kaiser Cheifs, Razorlight also shite.
Dirty Whirl, also a cracker
the only reason people hated it so much is because it took them about six years to do it, and it sounded like Led Zeppelin when it came out.
I'm sure if it never existed and Led Zeppelin released the same album as a comeback album now it would be getting rave reviews.
Maybe i'm joking, I'm really not sure.
but with SR, the song I really, really hate is that first tune on the greatest hits record (1st single?).
follow ups to liquid swords, cuban linx, tical etc. were pretty bad. meth's was particulary ghastly. ghost's was okay.
also, nas - "it was written" after "illmatic"
ENOUGH SAID !!!!
'Room on Fire' is great
And 'Favourite Worst Nightmare' is sooo much better than their first.
I can't tell the difference.
this is not the wider opinion though!
made me listen to it with him a bit more.
Now I much prefer Room on Fire.
Now I need someone to do the same for me with the third album.
but it's as good as the first. Don't know why there was so little fuss about it!
...Secret Machines- not counting the brilliant E.P
I like all-a Secret Machines. But ok.
10 Silver Drops just ran out of ideas
completely agree with you
I kinda liked the first record. There's certainly been a lot worse. But the pundits point was almost like a self-fulfilling prophecy on no.2
Second album was shitter. At least you're right in the sense that they got worse.
Their first album was miles better than their second, but I wouldn't call Up All Night 'great'... just 'decent' at the time.
everything went downhill from there.
...first e.p and the first album are great. The second album is horrible. No wonder yer man left. Oh, and Frankie Goes to hollywood- how about that?
..understands the concept of a GREAT first album. Stereophonics are and always have been terrible.
great as such, but Word Gets Around is a good album, and the rest are shite, so it kind of holds.
you can't say that, i really like both albums!
well, you can say that...yes..you can, fiiine
Elefant (I expect few know them - of the lines of Interpol/Razorlight)
and I'm surprised it took this long for the Libertines a couple above...but no, not shite.
i've just not 'connected' with anything since their first... i'm a JAMC fan so i guess that explains it...
re: DJ Shadow
Private Press was great!
Boy is a cracking debut. October was a pretty piss-poor follow up.
..but the second album was nowhere near shit or even average.
antics is a fantastic album.fair enough in comparison to turn on the bright lights its not as good but not many things are i dont think
though seriously ropey in places (that means you, Six Days). The Outsider is ten times worse though, total gash.
9 > 0
In more than one sense.
it has about 4 good tracks, where as the first was flawless.
So not necessarily complete crap but here goes:
*Minus The Bear, (but then a good 3rd)
*The Dears, (asuming No Cities Left was their debut, I'm not 100% sure)
thats what the second was called wasnt it?is it worth investigating even if its not as good as the first?the first was fantastic
..then get Gang Of Losers but don't expect it to be as good. It's not a poor album by any meens just a bit inconsistent. There isn't as much of a noise element, it's more stripped down and sometimes sounds a little weak. It's still worth buying although I wouldn't recommend it to someone who only had a fleeting interest in The Dears. You thought the first was "fantastic", so yes, buy it.
Dizzee Rascal's sophomore one wasn't too hot either.
Let me think
Nu Clear Sounds was ace!
on first listen, but it's actually very good.
der der der der der der
I liked the first album, when it came out - you know, before it was overplayed and then some.
It's like between albums Brandon Flowers had a revelation one night that he wanted to be some sub-Springsteen goose and out popped the first copy of 'Sam's Town' from his mouth.
yeah Sam's Town is utter shite
but in reverse. hate the first album, love sams town.
Marilyn Manson. Portrait of an American Family was amazing. Smells Like Children was amazingly bad. All was forgiven when Antichrist Superstar got released, however
Thank god Antichrist was so amazing!
(runs for cover)
I think s*ite is a bit strong but the 2d is definitely weaker I reckon.
alot of people seem to hold the 2nd in higher regard but I way prefer the 1st.
i like it, but i don't have the boner for it others seem to have. Perhaps i'll investigate the debut
Totally agree 'the Black Magic Show' was pretty dire.
show your bones. i find her voice way too annoying on the first album.
AGDCFF was fucking abysmal and everyone bummed it because they thought a concept album was groundbreaking.
It was centred around a dumb storyline with monosyllabic words like "yeah yeah yeah" repeated just to fill the rhythm and it spawned 'Dry Your Eyes'. Nuff said.
Slovenly mess, and the third one was somehow worse!
much like Skinner, i got carried away
but i dont think it was a mess.the third however was fucking abysmal
vs "out the club about 3, to the take away, the shit-in-a-tray merchants"
And just thinking about Get Out of My House makes my stomach turn.
The third one was horrible though. Eew.
1st album = stunning
2nd = based on a dare
fall of the plastic empire was a really great little album and then the second was total and utter over produced gash. WTF?!?!?!?
"No More Heroes" was rubbish apart from the title track.
And I actually like 'Angry Mob'.
black mirror = awful
the menace is the menACE
I loved the first (at the time). The second was a bit gash.
First album a modern classic, then they get dropped from their label and release a poor (in comparison) second LP.
they were never going to write a better album than the first though were they
the production on the second album is missing, hardly any bass. Luckily the third is fucking cracking eh?
Get Rich - 9/10
The Massacre - 3/10
Casually Dressed - pretty good.
Hours - hahahahahahahahahahahahha...
Arctic Monkeys too.
But definitely never ever The Strokes, BRMC, nor the Vines.
FWN is way better than Whatever...
it has better playing and more skilled arrangement, but it's bleh.
FWN is a lot more idiosyncratic, perhaps, but in my eyes is a much more accomplished album.
Not that I'd describe Cast Of Thousands as 'shite' but, well, I just couldn't get behind it.
Cast of Thousands is their masterpiece - though I've not heard the new'un yet. Leaders of the Free World was a good album but not even in the same league, frankly.
OP's choice-Without feathers is the most drastically bad fall from grace. I still have no idea what they were thinking, especially after making such a good debut.
I'll add Neon Bible, Delays- You see colours, and The Concretes-In Colour. They never should have hung around with The Magic numbers.
logic will break your heart is beautiful ... i think the follow up had one song that i liked- big disappointment!
is about the only song I like
1 > great
2 > not much so
sounded like it could be a b side to something off logic
The rest is awful country rock. I hope they take a long hard look in the mirror and start listening to some more Echo and the Bunnymen, in time for the next album.
retour a vega was good too but that was originally recorded during the first album anyway - well i think(it has the old guitarist playing on it)
Weekend In The City is just awful. Pompous, tuneless, and a stupid person's idea of incisive, piercing lyrics - verging on Kiedis territory.
First Stellastarr* album was great, I thought. Second a total non-event. Hope the third is better
might be better than the 1st. Yes, the debut is more varied and has more ideas, but the 2nd is ridiculously catchy, and a much more enjoyable listen to my ears.
far and away have to win this.
There is no greater debut to contrast with a more disapointing follow up in my mind.
also, Franz Ferdinand.
and, i really think that the first zutons album was awesome, and the second one was. well, it had 3 or 4 good songs maybe?
i think that does it for really great and then shite. i think a lot of the ones listed might be good then bad. but great and then shite. thats particular.
and mcfly too actually
and always will be.to me at least.
all the shins albums are brilliant, chutes too narrow is probably my favourite
Forgot to mention it but Franz F belong here too
Like someone has stated previously, not much was ever going to top TOTBL, but Antics is a fine, fine album.
Our Love To Admire, whilst not a total failure, is the poor relation of the three
i think there are a few ok songs on antics, but i kind of think ultimately that it was a bit too commercial (oh no, now i sound like an indie kid who only likes obscure things) and just lacked soul and material really.
I think OLTA, while still not a patch on TOTBL has had a lot more thought put into it and sounds a lot more like Interpol pushing themselves to reach their potential.
Well thats my opinion. I'm not underplaying the greatness of TOTBL, but I sometimes think that it might have been a bit of a fluke. In the sense that its a great album that was helped by. Being at the right time? I don't know. Im talking shit. bleh.
I'm listening to Fever to Tell now (on beeautiful vinyl), what the hell where they thinking with Show your Bones. Incredibly disappointing. :(
ideas above our station = exciting
shatterproof is not a challenge = boring
is nevermind as good as bleach? IS IT?
NO? Then it's not as good as Bleach. QED.
just as I hit the Post Reply button. I had Bleach and Incesticide on a C90 back in my schooldays which is why I mix 'em up. C'est la vie. It's still the best Nirvana song and not on Nevermind, so my point isn't so much intact as... oh fuck it, who cares?!
EARTH (Earth 2 is a milestone, 3 is impossible to sit through),
MORRISSEY (Kill Uncle, not Bona Drag. Kill Uncle makes me want to die),
Tenacious D (I guess technically, I count it as an album)
Arcade Fire - Neon Bible is a great record - seriously.
Secret Machines - Ten Silver Drops has some pretty strong moments, it's just not consistent, but neither was the first.
Interpol - How can any record with "Evil", "Narc", and "Slow Hands" on be bad? You guys are crazy.
Bloc Party - prefer the second album myself.
Royal Society wasnt exactly shit, but compared to the punch in the face that was Horse Of The Dog it came across like that for a long time.
