That requires attention...
This is when I listen to new albums so that I can just let them wash over me and any highlights may grab your attention without being a permanent distraction.
Label samplers I find suit this perfectly too.

Home is for cd pleasures. Work is for fucking around. It's in my contract I'm pretty sure.
I have to listen to music while I'm working but I find that lyrics often distract me from what I'm doing (especially if I'm marking literature essays). Bands like Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai et al are normally really good because they are interesting and dynamic without being verbally intrusive.
1) Kid A
2) Amon Tobin
3) The Meters
that's right, i fucking said it.
I think someone's already said it, but instrumental post-rock is the beau, try some Do Make Say Think or Explosions in the Sky.
So basically, post rock is such worthless, meandering bullshit, that it's best listened to when you're not really paying attention. Like birdsong. And roadworks.
Good post rock is best listened to in the dark with speakers maxed out, on the floor so your body vibrates with the bass as the crescendo builds.
But if you're working then it doesn't have any distracting lyrics.
listening to classical music helps you concentrate on a mental task more than doing it in silence.
Listening to dance music or something with a strong bass rhythm helps with a physcal task.
Or Freak by LFO.... also on repeat.
