that one where the people in the suits on the ground start dancing.
its funky.obviously nothing on the original but a worthy cover
a few obviously placed horn stabs don't make it have the funk.
You lot... why are you surprised you don't like a covers album marketed at the centre of the pop world? Just ignore.
What's next? Rapists really get me miffed?
how DARE he take OUR beloved indie classic and turn it into, yuk, a "pop song". Seriously what a complete cunt. I hope he gets cancer
all cover versions are the spawn of the devil. I'm going away now to cut my ears off.
But the cover is pure shite
Ronson and his ilk are guilty of sanitising music to the extent that it becomes muzak. A dry little exercise in creating dinner party soundtracks.
He's funded by his father's money into a 'project' to sell the zietgiest to the top gear audience.
It's blandcore, if you are not worried or upset by that you have no love of music.
How he can name 'valerie' and 'oh my god' as two of his favourtie songs of all time beggars belief.
i'm far more worried about the endless reams of sensitive folky idiots who fill up every part of the sub-mainstream purely becuse of their "niceness". Ronson at least makes music which is slightly different to the majority of other stuff out there right now, and it's purely his adoption of indie sacred cows which has made him such a national hate figure amongst the sort of people who populate DiS
hey, do you reckon he might have covered these songs because he actually likes them? I doubt it has anything to do with the sort of focus group cynicism you imply (though i'm sure the record industry has taken note), and is more to do with him liking horn led soul, hip hop beats and *GASP* radiohead
claim to love The zutons or The kaiser chiefs, no.
You have your opinion on the sacred cows of Indie, the smiths cover aside i would disagree. None of them particularily foated my boat as originals. I'm not bothered by what he butchers or covers, it's the perpetuation of blandness that bothers me.
To give Lilly Allen, Amy Winehouse , The Kaiser Chiefs and The Zutons and whatever else pallid ephemera he has no doubt chosen, another bite at the cherry is horrible.
It's basically jamiroquai/finlay quaye dinner party music for mondeo man, but you seem to be excusing him by suggesting that the indignation is caused by his choice of covers rather than his product.
probably don't need 'another go' given that one has written some of the loveliest pop songs of the last few years and the other is one of the most staggering musical talents to be spawned by this shitty little island in the history of contemporary music.
I disagree that it is 'music for mondeo man' entirely. Fair enough, Mondeo Man may like the Kaisers and their ilk but, last time I thought about their definition, didn't really dabble in funk and soul. I like the fact that the bloke is true to what he likes and I think the concept is, in essence, a good one, though a little flawed in its execution by, as you say, its occasional blandness.
True, its not going to stir everyone's cup but it doesn't offend me one bit. In fact I'd go so far as to say I quite like parts of it. I'm far less offended by it than I am by the cravenly worthy arguments made by some of the people commenting which lack the substance to give an honest opinion, positive or negative, but seek ridiculous contrivances to hate each song. Or is having one's own opinion 'so not cool right now'?
I have to like Mark Ronson otherwise I'm an arch poseur by extension.
I do think Lilly Allen and Amy Winehouse are vacuous and lazy. Contrived is not the word.
That's probably uncool too is it?
but for a great deal of people on here, yes.. specifically the Radiohead and Smiths covers. Maybe it's the placing of such sacred cows as Radiohead and The Smiths next to all that "lower" indie like The Zutons and The Kaiser Chiefs and amongst all the "lower" music on the radio which has caused such a furore - all those negative connections to OUR music. I don't think the music itself has much bearing on the judgement (although a general mistrust of R&B probably has something todo with it)
And regarding the music: i don't see much of a problem with it. It isn't THAT bad, really. And while you might say that's the problem, i think it's genuinely enjoyed by a lot of people rather than just being accepted. In particular, some of the orchestration is actually quite enjoyable
p.s. i quite like Jamiroquai, and don't get me started on the mass hatred of J-quai which fills the minds of many an indie fan. But, in my opinion, it's definitely a case of style over substance (much like the reaction to Ronson)
I think if he were to sing it in his regular voice rather than trying to be Thom Yorke then it would be significantly less horrific.
Maybe you do know.
It's that fella from Phantom Planet right? That just makes it even worse, knowing that it doesn't have to be that way.
by the shiteness of all of his music.
anyone in Foreigner has the right to be ashamed of any other music ever.
i was under the impression he was the son of mick ronson. silly me.
as banal radio fodder - they are slightly more interesting than some of the crap that gets played on Radio One/commercial radio. What I hate is the fact that the presenters actually give the impression that that is his song - particularly on the station I have to listen to at work. Covers should be recognised as such, not passed off as the new fella's creation.
there's every chance they don't know it's a cover. Indeed, the Brits Best Single category judges who've nominated Valerie this year seem not to know.
I didn't dislike this when it first came out - mainly because I didn't realise he did this horn/change tempo routine for every fucking song.
Now I want to remove this song from the world. Somehow.
yesterday they played canned heat by Jamaraqui (sp?) FEATURING Jay kay. First time I'd heard he wasn't the very embodiment of jamaraqui to be honest!
I thought it was ace. That was 2 years ago though on that terrible Radiohead covers album. He's since used the same schtik too often, but it's the best one on his album by a cuntry mile
of any use in anything Mark Ronson has ever buggered about with. He even managed to make a Zutons song worse than the original.
(bearing in mind i give it a big meh out of 10) is that it was released, like, 2 years ago - got some airtime on 6music, but then disappeared. Then, as soon as Amy and Lily boost him a bit (and of course, the album), he re-releases it.
Yes. A re-release.
Re-releases are the irrational thorn in my side. NRGH!!!
Makes me want to here the original.
Nowt is sacred in music, thank the wee man.
Pick on boyzone for shitty covers and not giving a fuck about music. Mark Ronson cares about what he does, you can here it.
As for Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen, they can just GTF. Vapid mince. I just can't stand the shit that goes with these two. It does spoil the music, even though I think it sucks.
Anyone for Adam F? He's in a similar boat and is good at what he does.
In what way is he in a similar boat to Mark Ronson?
Started of as a DJ then Rap Producer now general producer.
to be fair, especially considering his dad is Alvin Stardust.
and its surprisingly tuneless. Compared to his other tracks which have memorable (if annoying) hooks, this doesn't have any at all.
Back catalogue of the Ramones is worse. Arf. Well, that's one song anyway.
would be improved by the street sweeper pissing on the suits, well perhaps not improved but it would make me laugh.
I think I heard it about 2 years ago on MTV2, is it a re-release?
he won producer of the year at the grammys
And NOT just because it's a radiohead cover and all that.
EVERY song he has put out is a cover or a celebrity collaboration. I could make mark ronson song in two minutes: "Ok, so i'll take the tune of..... *then I pick something from my itunes* Starman. Done. Right, where's my swing time signature button. Ok, that's done. Now.... Up the tempo a bit. Ok, cool. Maybe add a few slightly effected trumpets in there... Ok, that's safe. And finally, take a midi of the original drums... Change the instrument to "R'n'B kit 06"... add a few snares in there... OUILA!"
