I only have Neu! and Faust IV.
What should I get?
start with Tago Mago or Ege Bamyasi. After that depends on what you like. Krautrock's a pretty broad genre.
Gentle & electronic: "Zuckerzeit" by Cluster or "Music von Harmonia" by Harmonia
Pastoral & Mellow: "Paradieswaarts Duul" by Amon Duul I
More rock: "UFO" by Guru Guru or "Yeti" by Amon Duul II
Psychedelic freakout: "Schwingungen" by Ash Ra Tempel or "In Den Garten Pharaos" by Popol Vuh
Everyone of these albums is a masterpiece and worth getting, but which ones you'll like depends on what aspects of Krautrock you prefer.
All the other Neu! and Faust albums.
All Can albums up to Soon Over Babalumba
Yeti by Amon Duul 2.
Anything by Harmonia especially Live 74
Schwingungen by Ash Ra Tempel
Zuckerzeit and Cluster 2 by Cluster
UFO by Guru Guru
Vuh by Popol Vuh
Sorry, didn't see your post when I posted. But seeing as we pretty much agree on the list of albums, no harm done.
Harmonia - 'Deluxe'.
Cluster - 'Zuckerzeit'
Cluster - 'Sowieso'
Also worth checking out is '03' by Twelve. Twelve are a recent band, but highly influenced by the likes of Harmonia, Cluster, etc. '03' is a gorgeous album. You can hear some songs here: http://www.myspace.com/twelvemusic
Two more albums are due out in the next couple of months.
Might be worth giving La Dusseldorf a go as well.
Agh, I wish Julian Cope's Krautrocksampler book would get republished over in these parts. I've got a pdf copy of it, but I want a real physical copy of it that I can hold and love.
And their previous band Organisation, mint!
schwingungen is pretty awesome as well though. the big hitters have already been mentioned but you might want to have a look at
sand - golem
german oak - german oak
dom - edge of time
walter wegmuller - tarot
and the first two tangerine dream albums are essential too as well as irrlicht by mr klaus schulze .... cosmic jokers and agitation free are supposed to be good too, but i haven't heard either ....
then again, who doesn't like massive fuck off 20-minute guitar solos?
on the other hand, schwingungen has naked women on the front cover.
right now and it's unbelievably awesome. buy it.
Agitation Free - "Malesch" and "Second"
Sergius Golowin - "Lord Krishna von Goloka"
Walter Wegmuller - "Tarot"
I'd go with Yeti or Wolf City
Einsturzende Neubaten count as Krautrock? Are they any good?
They are fookin awesome, yes.
turzi are quite influenced by a lot of the above.
on tour with smd at the mo, saw them at durr the other night and they were pretty spectacular.
