Favourite Track featuring John Reis (RFTC/Hot Snakes/Drive Like Jehu centric)

lemonbrickcombo [Edit] [Delete] 19 replies 13:04, 21 January '08

Given that Drive Like Jehu > RFTC > Hot Snakes, I think it's pretty clear that Do You Compute? is by far and away the best song Reis has put his name to.

A toi, DiS.

  • Sweet zombie jesus this is difficult.

I need to think about this over lunch.

Good idea for a thread, btw. :)

  • Luau

perhaps. Or maybe Here Come The Romes Plows. Its very close between those two.

    But its a hard choice.

  • i got

"scream, dracula, scream!" for £3.99 in a charity shop at the weekend.

    • good find!

One of my most favourite albums ever. Have you listened to it yet?

    • (soap) on a rope for sure

  • LUAU

    definitely.

    • Aloha, aloha sit up!

      Yes, Luau is best.

I saw Hot Snakes do it at their last ever UK gig and it was amazing (and roughly 12 minutes long)

  • RFTC

    'Young Livers'

they were my first ever proper gig too (i think) - Bristol Bierkeller 1996

  • pretty much anything off circa: now!

i'd have to listen to it again to decide. for now, 'glazed'.

i've got a soft spot for the mental version of 'chantilly lace', is that on all systems go?

still blows away the cobwebs every time. That said I prefer Yank Crime to the self-titled album.

As for Hot Snakes, Automatic Midnight most definitely for the win - If Credit's What Matters... is the bomb.

Never really liked RFTC too much though, On A Rope and Born in '69 aside.

    • hmmmmmmmmmmm

really friggin hard!! I am just saying the first one that come to mind and that is 'A+ in Arson Class'...however, 'Lorna Doom' is coming it a pretty damn close second in my unconscious...also 'Mystery Boy' and LUAU like you guys have said...fuck it, all of them joint top.

      • and

live...'Killy Kill' or 'come see come saw'...or when Hot Snakes did LUAU...or any Hot Snakes....I should stop trying to order my thoughts about this cos I really can't! Love it all.

Even better would be favourite Speedo onstage antic...I vote for getting everyone to throw shoes up on the stage and then drinking beer from the muddiest boots he could find when the power went off whilst they were headlining the NME tent at Reading circa 97

  • I disagree with your ordering

RFTC are definitely the worst of those 3 bands. Still can be pretty great though obviously. I probably listen to Hot Snakes most but Drive are also amazing. If pushed I would say
Hot Snakes > DLJ > Pitchfork > RFTC

    doctornovocalcords | 21 Jan '08, 14:56 | X
    • I don't know names of songs

but it would either be one specific one off Yank Crime or one off Suicide Invoice ("it's pretty clear to me" "underwritten by you" blah)

      • Toss up

between Luau, This Mystic Decade and Ball Lightning

An insasne amount of quality from the hands of one man.

    • How can Hot Snakes be better than DLJ?

I think you're probably right about RFTC, but I just don't like Hot Snakes as much cause they sound too much like DLJ lite...which irrationally irritates me...

      lemonbrickcombo @doctornovocalcords | 21 Jan '08, 15:18 | X
      • I love DLJ

but Hot Snakes are just so streamlined and direct and the songs are much catchier than DLJ. They're pretty different bands really and both ace at doing what they do. I don't really think of the connection between the two.
As the years go by I am starting to think about the last Hot Snakes gig I saw as the best gig I have ever been to as well so that sways things further.

  • ok..

It's predictable, but 'Born In 69' is such a fucking good song. From the opening drum roll and Speedo's yell of "GO!!!!!" to the final chant of "YOU'LL BE SORRRRRRRAAAAYYYY" - that song totally wins. (Video below if you don't believe me)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kpm_g14Jcds

With a back catalogue like theirs though, it's so difficult. I mean, 'Too Many Balls' rocks so hard, it breaks the CD at the end! And the opening bass notes to 'Pushed' are spine-tingling. Obviously, I have to credit 'Shucks' for its disjointed air-punch quality. Sorry, sorry I'll shut up now.

Hot Snakes - 'Bye Nancy Boy' or 'If Credit's What Matters, I'll Take Credit'

Drive Like Jehu - Super Unison
