Seeing bands you really, really don't like for the sake of a friend

DanielKelly [Edit] [Delete] 86 replies 10:34, 21 January '08

I'm seeing Plain White T's tonight because a good friend of mine really wanted to but really didn't want to go on his own. I'm going to do my best to contain my bile.

Help me through this difficult time by sharing similar tales

  • At Reading one year

my girlfriend really wanted to see The Darkness so I....went off and watched the Shins instead. No wonder I'm single now.

    • at Leeds in 2005

I was dragged to see Kasabian in the Carling Tent. Well I say 'dragged', I'd already been in there all afternoon watching Pretty Girls Make Graves, Mclusky and The Shins, but my mate insisted we stay to watch the aforementioned lad-rock neanderthals. Their biggest crime was just being so fucking boring.

    • The Darkness = not good

However, The Darkness >>>>>>>> The Shins

      Do the math.

on the Carling trumpted them in 2005 on the NME mind.

        • Yes, I clearly meant

2004 rather than 2005. I've either been trying to suppress the memories or my brain is just puddled.

    hahahahaha

a friend of mine went to see them on saturday because he had to review them, even though he hates them, and in the process missed out on seeing cowtown

    • I've seen Plain White T's

(not by choice, they were supporting another band my ex took me to see) and they were terrible.

Apart from that, I never go to see bands I don't like for the sake of a friend. Sorry!

    • I once almost had to go to a Meatloaf gig with a friend...

Managed to get out of it.

When I was 15 a friend of mine convinced a load of us to go and see the Spice Girls at Wembley. On the upside I got to go to Wembley. On the downside Cleopatra were the suppport...

There is no way I'd have turned down going to see Meat Loaf!

        • It was the price as much as anything.

I would have quite enjoyed it as a spectacle. But it would have been £30 for a ticket plus the cost of getting from Bristol to Cardiff and would have worked out as £50 to see someone I wasn't arsed about...

I love my missus, but I did'nt the night I had to go and see Jet with her.

      JET people, JET

nearly 2hours of the same song over and over and over and over. I was driving as well which enhanced the badness factor by 100, at least if I had been pissed I may have forgotten it by now.

        • The horror, the horror

I have a 'going to a gig for a loved one' story IN REVERSE:

I had tickets for a tiny, secret and uber exclusive radiohead gig in Oxford over 10 years ago. However, I had promised to take a girl I had a crush on to a fireworks display. I gave my ticket to my brother...

A month later she was going out - with my brother! There's a moral here people.

<marriedcentric> I got tivkets to take my wife to prince last year, that's not the ba show, it was great! she couldn't go for whatever reason, so when she got offered tickets to another O2 she jumped at them! who was it for...?

Friends friend pulled out, she was desperate! It was horrific!

A recent shocker: Some friends had a spare ticket to see Milburn and it was free and I was getting picked up and dropped off from my doorstep so I thought, 'nothing to lose, better than spending a night in on my own.' I WAS WRONG. It was painful.

but i often drag friends along to gigs they aren't expecting/haven't heard. ie. the monosound night with Sam Isaac, Gossamar, Luke', Pencil Toes etc. like Literaly drove up to a friends house on the way to Hereford (like 2 hours from where i live) and called on him to come. they're good friends. they all enjoyed it too.

              • I saw Keane twice

                in, I guess, 2005.

When she said she wanted to see them supporting Travis I finally put my foot down and told her to piss off.

She was obsessed with Tom. They played the Buffalo Bar one night (tiny venue), and she caught him outside, and offered to be his stalker.

The poor boy looked petrified. I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me.

These days, if I want to see something others don't like, I don't try to talk anyone into it - I'll go alone. That way, I don't have to return tedious favours!

I saw Keane at Wireless in 2005 with my then-girlfriend, who really liked them. They were OK. Seeing Martha Wainwright, Rufus Wainwright and Supergrass as well made it a decent afternoon overall, although I was also exposed to James Blunt covering "Where Is My Mind?", so it can't be counted as a complete success.

              • ugh, i hate these things

i can't even remember what they were called, some rockabilly punk thing (female singer/double bassist?) and i went with my friend out of the goodness of my heart, only to be squished and laughed at by punk kids. he's never made it up to me!

I really wanted to enjoy it even in an ironic way.

                It was impossible.

return for a ticket to the Saturday night Old Trafford Arctic Monkeys gig (and I know many on here would claim this to be a terrible gig, but i loved it) my friend took me to see Reverand and the Makers, yet even this level of atrocity was surpassed by the Tings Tings, who were supporting.
