What's your favourite venue?
Anywhere in the world. Not even based in sound quality or whatever.
For me, it has to be the Glasgow Barrowland.
It's so tacky and grubby and the pints are fucking terrible. Yet, it is so undeniably amazing.

i'm not mad keen on night and day
the bands they book are mostly rubbish nowadays. when there's not many people there, everyone sits down at the back and the whole of the front of the room is empty (like when i saw volcano! and was one of only three people stood near the stage). also, when there are people there, that post gets in the way and you can't see anything.
brudenell social club
looks like something of our phoenix nights
lots of fair lights up the wall
cheap drinks
best sound
best promoters put on the best bands there
it has a deal or no deal game
ace pool/snooker room
i seriously can't type
*something OUT OF phoenix nights
and
*fairy lights
shoot me
yep
good call, except the gigs there are empty because everyone in manchester is a lazy cunt
this^
in my experience the brudenell's just been really laid back. Having lots of the older generations sat drinking in the room next door, probably wondering what all the noise is about, adds something
^indeed yes
My two favourite places in the world are about 2 minutes away from eachother (brudenell and hyde park picture house)
There's a big
bingo ball drum thing backstage :D I long for the day that someone pauses their set for a quick round of bingo, just to fit in with the hall.
i'll be talking about these gigs forever
but at the three days of cribsmas thing they did exactly this. There was a game of bingo between sets, somehow they managed to get people playing musical statues... the list of social club style activities goes on
i'm not sure if i have a favourite
just a really long list of ones i don't like.
but a couple of ones that are really good are:
the portland arms, cambridge- i saw my first gig there and it's a lovely little room.
fuel, manchester- every gig i've been to there has been good. golden lab put some ace things on and it's always nice and cosy.
klondyke club, levenshulme- i don't really need to explain that one.
Exeter Phoenix
It's great, I mean the organization sucks and it's pretty crappy but gigs are always brilliant there. Bristol Carling Academy is pretty good too.
Luminaire
tis my favorite
i should really be all
"edinburgh is better than glasgow" here, and say cabaret voltaire or something.
but as much as i love edinburgh's venues, i completely agree with you.
king tuts is fucking horrible though. i have no idea how it manages to get so many best venue awards.
It's a nice wee place.
But it's definitely not all it's cracked up to be.
Do they still play off the whole Oasis thing?
I have an idea: Oasis
It's still trading off one legendary evening over a decade ago
some guys at school went to see oasis
at king tuts. possibly that gig, but probably not. anyway, they said it was shite. probably was too...
Troubadour in Los Angeles
It isn't possible to have a better place to see a band. It's that good.
I've wanted to go here for so long.
If I even leave Europe it will be to see a band at the Troubadour.
Yes
The Barra's, definitely.
No internal debate- without a doubt.
I really want to see a gig at Mono
I've only ever been in there for lunch.
tv screens with adverts?
seriously?
that's terrible :'( (i havent been there in about 3 and half years.)
i dont even remember that
i must admit that every time i've been there i've been VERY drunk and most times i was seeing idlewild (both have probably influenced my affection)
hmm
UK - Brudenell Social Club, Leeds. If you could remove the photopit, The Luminaire in Kilburn is quite nice.
Rest of Europe - possibly AZ CONNI in Dresden, but there's lots of other goodies.
The Spitz was good. Has it closed now?
Aww, I love the Barrowlands
It's the luxury paste-table bar inside with its cans and plastic cups, the bouncy floor and the fear you get after gigs from all the scadgy folk asking you for 10p...
But it definitely has some of the best sound I've ever heard at a gig, the atmosphere in there can be really captivating and that bouncy floor... brilliant.
The Portland Arms
A lovely little venue with too many doors.
Also: The Norwich Arts Centre. I love that place.
queens hall
in edinburgh is good.
the barras is amazing though. if only for the light up 'BARROWLANDS' outside the venue. it's like christmas all year round.
Barrowlands
All the way, then sleazy's for a small venue. There are a few good ones in Glasgow.
I came in to say the Brudenell
But my other favourite is the Basement at Rock City, in Nottingham. They get great bands, the low ceiling is ace, and there's always amazing sound. Last year I saw Converge and Blood Brothers there in the space of four days.
I love the Basement too
Seeing everyone tear the roof down (quite literally) in there at the end of Gallows set during dot to dot festival last year was a highlight for me. That and Big Business the year before.
I was in there for Big Business.
As I remember, the bassist broke a string at the end of the first song, and had to spend a good five minutes on fixing it. Without so much as a moment's silence, the drummer just took over, blasted out a massive drum solo, and seamlessly rock n rolled into the second song one string change later.
It was badass.
.
I like the Scala 'cos I get lost in there. There are four rooms apparently but I've never dared go in for fear of getting thrown out or accidentally ending up in someone's dresssing rooom or summat
Glasgow: Barras is great yeah
I LOVE the new Stereo. Sleazy's rules supreme too.
King Tuts is in my deepest nightmares. I will only ever go there to see Los Campesinos :)
