Now up on their myspace, what do you all think?
but i may as well repeat myself, i dont like those 2 tracks really, and after hearing pretty much all the album livea few times, the only song im really looking forward to hearing recorded is If You'd Seen a Battlefield
most of the new stuff seems to go nowhere for two long
*live a few times
and shall get back to this thread once i've actually listened.
and i am literally bursting at the seams with excitement.
WHEN IS IT RELEASED?
or, more importantly
WHEN WILL SOMEONE LEAK IT SO I CAN DOWNLOAD IT ILLEGALLY?
agree on 2/3 of the things toby said.
i'm enjoying both of them a lot and when is it released?
the difference however is that this is one of only a few releases i shall be buying next year. they deserve it if anyone does.
and secondly i am also definitely going to buy it to, i just can't wait any longer to hear it!
you're NEVER GOING TO BUY IT!!!!!
SoandSo & SoandSo is the best song the band have ever recorded and the album has exceeded my expectations tenfold, it's magnificent.
That's my tuppenny bit.
i love both tracks, but what happened to the intro of 'Naughtiest girl....'?
i loved that part.
cant wait for the album and video and single and b-side and seeing them live again!
full version has it
This sounds very promising.
I for one am fucking bored of waiting for the album to be released, it's been finished for how long...? I can't really be bothered to stream low quality tracks on myspazz, just hurry up and put the album out else I shall take my business elsewhere dammit :p
the record is coming out when's best for the band to get the most from it. we could have released in december and no-one would have noticed it in all the end of year lists and tips for 2008 nonsense. there are some of the busiest release weeks ever coming up and the band would be up against about 25 better profiled releases (Adele, Foals, Blood Red Shoes, etc) every week which would be much more likely to get press coverage and radio support.
it's been a long time coming but we want to give the band the very best chance to garner the attention they and this record deserves.
is the one i was trying to describe here: http://www.drownedinsound.com/articles/2758442#r2761499
both of these sound incredible. I WANT MORE. I WANT THEM NOW!
Possibly because Soandso is just one really tedius song repeated in slightly different, but uninteresting ways 6 or 7 times. It might have repeated itself one more time, but God help me, I couldn't make it into the 8th minute.
they played as Saul William's backing band for a few gigs. Anyone know anymore about this?
it's on one of their homeless musics CDs, pretty good.
PM me and i'll megaupload some tracks for anyone if they like.
They did, improvised performances at reading. three recordings of which are on homeless musics 2. Check out their myspace.
and, the album is being held back blatantely because no body buys that kind of band's music at christmas and everyone is skint afterwards. All the good stuff is out in march.
I couldn't make it into the 8th minute because I'm wrong?
your stealthy vs popular opinion style rants, but i think that in this particular case you are indeed wrong. youthmovies are ace.
Repeating itself? Are you serious? You mean, like, no bands have refrains now? POP IS DEAD!
You're a complete idiot sometimes, you really fucking are.
It is you that is the idiot. Yes, most music repeats itself.
The skill is making it interesting.
There is a band. This band are called Meshuggah/Mahavishnu Orchestra/Squarepusher. Meshuggah/Mahavishnu Orchestra/Squarepusher write songs that sometimes seem to consist merely of one phrase repeating itself for the entire duration. However, this band(s) are technically accomplished enough and more important, imaginitive enough to encode enough subtle inflections into their songs right down to invididual measures to make it not just interesting, but continuously interesting - to the degree that just one playthrough of a particular song won't reveal the whole thing.
In the case of this Youthmovies song, the same structural motif happening again and again with such lack of skill or imagination that I actually started wondering if the file had been corrupted in the process of uploading. This is not interesting. It is the opposite of interesting. It is boring.
Particularly seeing as it's the same motif that can be identified in many of their earlier songs, indicating that as well as boring me, the band have bored themselves into writing songs that steal from themselves. Only this time with the extra added value of a sheen of pretentious faux-technicality that manifests itself in a schisophrenic desire to clatter pointlessly through a random selection of notes and chords without taking the time or effort to ensure that each phrase adds to the song as a whole or is even interesting to listen to.
And perhaps if you spent more time listening to music - and I don't mean being present when a CD is playing, but actually UNDERSTANDING what happens when a man plays a note on a musical instrument - and less time calling people names on message boards whenever anyone says anything that even vaguely riles you, you'd realise this as I have.
And since I thought I'd listen to this song the whole way through to inform the writing of this post, I now know that this song has really crappy long atonal coda that actually makes me want to choke something.
So thanks for that.
It is the 'crappy long atonal coda' that I find pleasant, personally.
Having spent a large part of my life studying music theory and being a proficient pianist, I very much enjoy your request.
I just think you're bitter because nobody takes you seriously. I like calling people names on message boards, I feel that it compensates for my depressingly average penis size and inability to take part in the intelligent debates that so often go on here.
p.s ur gay lol
Having spent a large part of my life avoiding studying music theory and being a shitty pianist, I am very much enjoying the irony of you having such crap taste, whilst mine is so wildy superior it's all I can do not to jump on the phone and tell Npower to shove it because I can power this house with my own smugness.
Also: You can now infer that someone is bitter at not being taken seriously by analysing their opinions on certain pieces of music.
UR TEH GAYEST! BUT ALSO TEH BEST SICOANALIST. LAMAOS
I actually (grudgingly) like Youthmovies. I just hate this song.
post of the fucking century.
the only bit you could call repetitive is the ending, the rest is full of movement and really subtle nuances in the melody. crablin's right in saying that the altitude line is beautiful, and despite how impressive your long post looks it doesn't seem relevant to the song at all. faux technicality? what does that even mean? they're pretending to play their instruments well but its all a ruse?
i challenge you to listen to this again and actually count how many times parts are repeated, i think you'll find it is not a particularly high number (with the exception of the ending). nearly everything you said is transparent nothing which barely masks some bizarre agenda you have with the band. and your line about listening to music? hahaha, jesus, what does that even mean? completely nonsensical criticism, completely redundant
This is such nonsense. The entire song is very repetitive. There is no subtle nuance. Crablin is wrong to say the altitude line is beautiful. And despite the impressive way you've split your post into two paragraphs, it doesn't seem to relevent to my post at a-- and so on. Etc etc.
...that said, there are two points that are worth picking up on seriously:
1) The faux technicality refers to the "schisophrenic desire to clatter pointlessly through a random selection of notes and chords without taking the time or effort to ensure that each phrase adds to the song as a whole or is even interesting to listen to". You can contrast this to various jazz groups and folks like Dillinger Escape Plan whose music could be described in this way, but which to me sound organic and unforced. Not the case here. For however much it counts, by my standards the instruments aren't played all that specially.
2) Bizarre agenda with the band - this stems from Youthmovies coming so very close to being a band that does everything I like, but falling short in certain fundemental aspects - an issue I've gone into several times on this board. Now I realise you feel it may have helped your argument in some way to characterise me as having a bizarre agenda, but oh well.
youthmovies aren't my thing at all, but I've always found that for me the problem is that they're not repetitive enough, rather than that they're too repetitive.
I love 'Hurrah...' more than anything, but this new stuff worries me slightly. The ending of 'Soandso and Soandso' is much better live - the recorded version just annoys me.
The orginal version of TNGIAM is better as well.
And, the bit that annoys me the most...
both songs contain that fucking dance-y open close hi-hat drumbeat that Foals build all their songs around. Why?
Sorry to complain so much, I just thought that their early stuff was so good - I must have set my expectations too high for these songs.
Because it's an easy to play, yet effective rhythmic device that a lot of bands discovered when they went off to university and got something other than hideously white indie bands played to them.
I discovered it on 2 Unlimited's No Limit. No no. No no no no. No no no no. No no...
what the colour of any band has to do with their musical output. That just comes off a little racist to me.
That's because you're white. Sorry.
wikipedia but better
you can't edit other people's posts!
Who, apart from a chronic mentalist, would want to dance to Youthmovies?
This may sound snobbish, but it seemed a bit of a 'cash-in' - I doubt they would have put the drumbeat in if they wrote the songs 2 years ago.
and that's a hell of a lot of times. consider me a chronic mentalist
I saw them live with Russian Circles last year. To me they just sounded like an emo King Crimson, although, to be fair, I was quite pissed.
and theyre playing Bournemouth as well ^_^
Just the idea of that fills me with tears of joy.
sounds quite pleasing to me.
how the bit in 'SoandSo' where Andrew sings 'the altitude of raindrops is what soaks you' could be described as anything other than melodic perfection. It's absolutely glorious.
Nearly as good as the last section of 'Last Night of the Proms'. OH BABY.
of raindrops that soaks you?
is this the new metior/metioroid?
p.s poetic licence.
Anyway, the best of DiS's bands which includes but does not take into account how beautiful Emily Haines is.
They deserve a jump into 'mid-level' indie status though they're not upper tier material yet, imo. Sometimes dude comes across sounding like american emo (as does other DiS fav, MMISL, though from different musical angles).
than all other dis bands its silly.
Jeniferever pwns them all.
Youthmovies vs Foals (ish) feature forthcoming.
it would be the best thing on here ever
foals and youthmovies are (mostly) skinny indie boys. 65 have a mental drummer (although i guess youthmovies have one of them too...) PLUS a proper real viking warrior
"no, YOU ripped US off!"
Ian Williams could referee;
"I'll have no fret-wankery below the shoulders!"
are a band i have some issues with.
One one level I really appreciate what thy do, how they do it and many, many moments in the music.
On another level they sometimes sound cold and distant.
Thats poorly put, but you can get the drift...
the new stuff grew on me lots when i saw them live a few nights in a row, and the new stuff sounds awesome.
but a youthmovies vs foals feature, Mike!? no contest surely!?
youthmovies will win, obviously.
it's a silly feature.
i think (hoping!) it's going to be the sort of release where each track feeds into and enhances the ones around it.
