Has anyone heard it?
but would like to. Any links around?
DiS could get in trouble etc.
i've heard the album - it's really disappointing.
the title 'distortion' was chosen because the most prominent instrument on the record is an acoustic piano which, wait for it, has distorted feedback!
out of the first four songs, merritt only sings on one of them, one is an instrumental and two have a woman singing. that's as far as i got on first listen.
truly dreadful though.
but if it's anywhere near as bad as the sleeve...
and its brilliant. Really, really good songs. All the noise totally works too. Songs sound a lot like those on '69 Love Songs', only its shorter obviously. Probably a stronger set of songs overall, by virtue of being more focused. Even hits the heights of the likes of 'When My Boy Walks Down The Street' on 'California Girls' and 'The Nun's Litany'. An early contender for album of next year, I reckon, even if the sleeve is admittedly quite ugly.
it's a pile of utter fucking toss! stephen merritt is going from prince to frog in the space of one record.
are we even listening to the same record here? The record you described is a bad record. The record I am describing (and listening to right now for the second time in a row) is a very good one.
it's fantastic. claudia gonson gets the best tunes again, but not by much. it's almost galling that he can appear to knock this stuff off without trying yet it's still wonderful.
it doesn't even touch Beach House's Devotion
He's lived long enough to make another really good album.
Its rare for the post-masterpiece phase of a songwriter's career, I'll give you that, but he's managed it, somehow. I'm more surprised he isn't happy yet.
I really, really don't.
I'm all for discord and white noise in the right sorts of places. I don't, by any means, only listen to crystal-clear stuff that's been polished to within an inch of its life. But I was aghast when I first heard it, and my opinion hasn't really improved since. It sounds like a lousy bootleg being played on tinny mobile phone speakers and seriously not in a good way.
I understand that I might be missing something, because an awful lot of people seem to be saying it's wonderful, but I really don't like it. It's like any semblance of a pop song that might be there is struggling to stay afloat under all that horrible noise and I find it so, so infuriating.
It's like a tape of a tape of a tape. It's like everything's been lost. It's like you're trying to enjoy something with your head under water. And not in a cool, sonic sort of way.
Granted, the first time I heard anything from it was on the radio and that mightn't have been the best circumstances. And I should persevere and see if something ultimately falls into place. But right now I'm pretty convinced that it's a stinker. And that he ought to stop faffing about and just get back to making something that's actually, like, coherent.
And the cover alone is reason enough to hate it. It makes me think he's just being a knobber. Bleurgh.
gives it a timeless feel. Then again I liked 'Some Loud Thunder' too.
I think theyve been my top listened-to band on last fm for the last few weeks.
i can't imagine myself hating it since i love most of his other stuff... not on stmusic though, that site is not living up to it's 'oink replacement' tag very well.
sounds very 80s, but I quite like it.
