Is the only Guided By Voices song I know. But I love it. With this in mind, where should I go from here album wise?
is probably the best place to start, it certainly worked for me.
Under the Bushes Under the Stars
Half Smiles of the Decomposed
then the Hardcore UFOs box set if you're feeling flush.
I'd steer clear of Do The Collapse myself, it's probably their worst album.
except i really like Do The Collapse and would put it above Earthquake Glue. i'd also put Universal Truths and Cycles above Earthquake too. and the first four albums too. and Half Smiles.
to be fair the sheer brilliance of Useless Inventions probably clouds my judgement of Earthquake Glue as an album
it's a tall order so why not make it even more ridiculous and stick on some of the Robert Pollard solo albums:
Choreographed Man of War, Speak Kindly of your Voluntary Fire Department, Waved Out, Kid Marine, From a Compound eye, Normal Happiness are all essential and feature a lot of similar power pop nuggets.(I can't really comment on the two solo albums he released in October, haven't spent much time with them yet)
The "Demons and Painkillers" disc on the Human Amusements *box set* collects some of the single and EP tracks scattered over their earlier years and features some of their best songs that you don't get on the albums. I think that's enough for now :-)
normal happiness is awful.
his only truly essential solo records are waved out, kid marine, speak kindly and not in my airforce. Airforce is actually much better than a few of the GBV albums.
forgot about "not in my airforce", you're dead right!
i'd say give NH another try - you might be surprised, it was kinda a grower for me...
and still dont like nearly any of it
but you know with Pollard it gets subjective after a while ,some stuff clicks immediately, some doesn't and some takes ages to sink in. hard work but so much fun! :-)
p.s. are you on DTS by any chance?
then they changed the security protocols, and to be honest the place is so horrifically sycophantic that i'm not that bothered about sorting it out
:-) i hear you about it being a bit crazy over there. I don't go there so much anymore either... Mainly as it's become so US-centric, and since Bob doesn't come over to tour anymore it's got worse. you feel a bit.. left out from all the phun...but there are some good people on there and it is quite a unique place..
this place is cliquey, they obviously havent seen RTS
You might as well start with Human Amusements...
You gotta download 'The Best of Jill Hives' and 'Game of Pricks'
Legally, of course :P
alien lanes, bee thousand, human amusements: best of (best place to start), plus quite a few other albums I forget the title of.
GET THEM ALL!!
