Music Social More…

do you ever look through your music library

douchebag [Edit] [Delete] 21 replies 20:57, 10 December '07

and feel completely disillusioned?

Nowadays, when i flick through looking for an album to listen to i just think "christ, i've heard all this stuff so many times before". Some of them are my favourite albums ever, but i think i need some time apart. I need to forget they exist. I need to not see them whenever i'm looking for something to listen to, or when i put the iPod on shuffle. Absence makes the heart grow fonder and all that

So, wish me luck - i'm about to decimate my computerised music collection with little mercy. Anything i have on CD (the majority) will be first against the wall, and some of the downloads might also have to say goodbye. But next time you see me i'll be many gigs lighter

Maybe you should do the same

  • i get the opposite feeling

"i haven't listened to that in ages. or that. or that..."

i think that's what happens when your collection becomes too big to manage.

    • though i highly commend what you're doing

      wish i had those guts!

  • I did this quite a lot

So I deleted everything from back when I used to read the NME. No more Razorlite/Kooks/Shit. I'm back to the start of my collection, but my friends have good taste so I'll let them borrow my iPod.

    • ^ This makes it sound like I had more shit than I did

lolz. But the point is, a cull of the weaker stuff on there helps no end.

  • ...

Nah, I'm a hoarder. I keep everything I've ever owned. NOTHING gets deleted. NOTHING.

...well, one thing got deleted by accident once, but apart from that. Nothing!

  • maybe not disillusioned

i look at every cd/vinyl i own and think "i love this album but i really don't want it on right now". i also deleted all of the music on my computer last night (except for stuff like sacrificial totem and tokyo kid brothers that i might never find again), not really cos i'm tired of it, but i've got too much shit clogging up the system and it takes ffffuuuuucccckkkkiiiinnnggg aaaaaagggggggeeeessssss to do anything on here.

  • yes

especially because i have quite a lot of complete album back catalogues so i flick through the giant itunes list of bands and several artists have literally hundreds of tracks which makes me think i really need to buy more albums by new (to me) artists.
of course this is silly talk, i've got a lot of stuff that's supposed to be awesome that i've barely listened to.

  • uhhh

    ideserve2 | 10 Dec '07, 21:25 | X
  • I'd never delete loads of stuff.

I have too much stuff that I've yet to listen to.

    st_nick_ | 10 Dec '07, 21:37 | X
  • Once I get some cd storage facilities...

I might try deleting stuff. It'd certainly help out my ipod-nearly-overflowing-again-after-previous-deletions troubles

    yes_ | 10 Dec '07, 21:41 | X
  • ok then

i've disposed of about 15 gigs (a bit less than half my collection). And i feel.. satisfied

it wasn't pretty though. Many brave soldiers gave their lives to satisfy my whim, but they will live on in the hearts of the rest. And they had served me well.

The CD supplemented ones were the most brutally massacred by far, although most of the newer cd rips stay. And in terms of downloads i went easy on the ones i've barely listened to (though they may well face the chop after a bit of inspectory listening) and lost quite a few of the less impressive long-termers. I might feel the need to hear them again at some point, which will be the true test of their importance, but i wouldn't count on it

All in all, my library feels reinvigorated. I think this is the start of something beautiful

  • no

    i think
'fuck i need to listen to all of this right now and also the rest of all recorded music ever made'

  • now here dis..

    But dont forget the songs,
    That made you cry,
And the songs that saved your life,
    Yes, youre older now,
    And youre a clever swine,
But they were the only ones who ever, stood by you.

  • 2 cd players at once

I tried this solution to not knowing what to listen to first. It doesn't work, but it was fun finding out.

The other trick is to speed up everything so you can listen to it faster (it bugs me no end that it you can't listen to an hour-long album in less than 60 minutes). This works better, but only with some music.

    dancehallwraith @Constellation | 11 Dec '07, 13:27 | X
  • I got this recently,

but I've found a solution. Listen to all your albums in alphabetical order. Three weeks into this pledge, I'm at F. Best decision I ever made.

  • but what if it happens to my porn collection?
