Your one essential album

Chris64 [Edit] [Delete] 95 replies 14:03, 2 December '07

Quite often on these boards people rave about albums being classic and essential and timeless and so on and so forth, and more often than not I find myself having not heard the album in question. So, always being one to strive for self improvement I would like you to tell me the one album that I should listen to above any other.

I just listened to 'In The Aeroplane Over The Sea' for the first time ever, it's quite nice.

  • Impossible to choose.

    Seriously.

    • ^^^ this... there is not just 'one' essential LP

      Rose-Kitten @IrishMagpie | 3 Dec '07, 13:17 | X
  • Joanna Newsom - Ys

    was my first thought.

    Jamie_Summers | 2 Dec '07, 14:08 | X
    • Her voice makes me want to cry

I really can't stand it. Musically though she is good, I can see why everyone fusses over her.

      Chris64 @Jamie_Summers | 2 Dec '07, 14:10 | X
      • Her voice makes me want to commit some kind of jihad against her..

        ..

        Rose-Kitten @Chris64 | 3 Dec '07, 13:16 | X
  • For me, Loveless.

    Boy, that was easy.

  • Company Flow- Funcrusher Plus

Because its incredible, and not enough people have. But also, more the point, its like one of those compilations that usually come out years after they break up of a short-lived but seminal bands complete work (like the Minor Threat album, Way of the Vaselines, etc), only this one kind of came out when they were still around, only its basically just a lot of extra tracks added to the original 'Funcrusher' EP (hence the name).

Either way, Company Flow were amazing, think classic hip-hop only completely inverted into something dystopian and fiercely intelligent. El-P was in them. And he's never been better. Even producing the Cannibal Ox album. The beats are less complex in Funcrusher Plus but also less sprawling, as much as I do love Cannibal Ox, I prefer Company Flow's approach.

    • That was rather too florid

for this thread, I feel exposed now.

      MelesMeles @MelesMeles | 2 Dec '07, 14:16 | X
      • I very much enjoyed your floridness/floridity?

It demonstrated how much you love that album. You've made me want to listen to it anyway. Job done.

            Sonic Nurse

            stwerewolf @MelesMeles | 2 Dec '07, 14:33 | X
            • Please justify this choice

as opposed to the other Sonic Youth albums.

              (not judging, just interested)

              MelesMeles @stwerewolf | 2 Dec '07, 14:39 | X
              • because it has everything i love about sonic youth in it

there are some sprawling, epic tracks

                some discordant, fuzzy tracks

some really beautiful chilled out tracks

i don't know, it's just the sonic youth album i usually always go for if i'm in an sy mood, and i own all the albums on cd, so it's not like ive not got the choice.

my next favourites are probably Sister, Daydream Nation, EVOL and Murray Street

                stwerewolf @MelesMeles | 3 Dec '07, 11:50 | X
            • fuckinlove SONIC NURSE!

    • I've been recommended David Thomas Broughton several times

and he is high on my list of albums I need to get, although is 'The Complete Guide...' not just an EP? Or am I ill informed?

I already have 'Pet Sounds' and 'Ok Computer', I'm not a complete loser. Thanks for making sure all the same though.

      Chris64 @TheWildSon | 2 Dec '07, 14:59 | X
      • It's sorta like Ys

in the sense that it's an album of five really long songs. It's as long as any album, anyway...
