Your one essential album
Quite often on these boards people rave about albums being classic and essential and timeless and so on and so forth, and more often than not I find myself having not heard the album in question. So, always being one to strive for self improvement I would like you to tell me the one album that I should listen to above any other.
I just listened to 'In The Aeroplane Over The Sea' for the first time ever, it's quite nice.
Impossible to choose.
Seriously.
^^^ this... there is not just 'one' essential LP
Joanna Newsom - Ys
was my first thought.
Her voice makes me want to cry
I really can't stand it. Musically though she is good, I can see why everyone fusses over her.
Her voice makes me want to commit some kind of jihad against her..
..
For me, Loveless.
Boy, that was easy.
Company Flow- Funcrusher Plus
Because its incredible, and not enough people have. But also, more the point, its like one of those compilations that usually come out years after they break up of a short-lived but seminal bands complete work (like the Minor Threat album, Way of the Vaselines, etc), only this one kind of came out when they were still around, only its basically just a lot of extra tracks added to the original 'Funcrusher' EP (hence the name).
Either way, Company Flow were amazing, think classic hip-hop only completely inverted into something dystopian and fiercely intelligent. El-P was in them. And he's never been better. Even producing the Cannibal Ox album. The beats are less complex in Funcrusher Plus but also less sprawling, as much as I do love Cannibal Ox, I prefer Company Flow's approach.
That was rather too florid
for this thread, I feel exposed now.
I very much enjoyed your floridness/floridity?
It demonstrated how much you love that album. You've made me want to listen to it anyway. Job done.
Hooray!
Sonic Youth
Sonic Nurse
Please justify this choice
as opposed to the other Sonic Youth albums.
(not judging, just interested)
because it has everything i love about sonic youth in it
there are some sprawling, epic tracks
some discordant, fuzzy tracks
some really beautiful chilled out tracks
i don't know, it's just the sonic youth album i usually always go for if i'm in an sy mood, and i own all the albums on cd, so it's not like ive not got the choice.
my next favourites are probably Sister, Daydream Nation, EVOL and Murray Street
fuckinlove SONIC NURSE!
Think I prefer Daydream nation though
Funeral
gotta be.
Radiohead - OK Computer
So maybe I'm a boring, predictable Radiohead fanboy. But I love it.
Fine,
make me reconsider Funeral!!!!
YAAAAAAAAAAWN
Sorry, just had to do that.
about
what? ok cmputer, or the thread?
OK Computer
I love the thread.
Oh crap now on my profile it looks like this:
"OK Computer in thread Your one essential album by Chris64"
I feel exposed once more.
Haha
I know, it's appaling how dull I am.
actually
scratch what I said, at the moment it's For Screening Purposes Only.
David Thomas Broughton - The Complete Guide To Insufficiency
I've been recommended David Thomas Broughton several times
and he is high on my list of albums I need to get, although is 'The Complete Guide...' not just an EP? Or am I ill informed?
I already have 'Pet Sounds' and 'Ok Computer', I'm not a complete loser. Thanks for making sure all the same though.
It's sorta like Ys
in the sense that it's an album of five really long songs. It's as long as any album, anyway...
The Beach Boys
Pet Sounds
Television
Marquee Moon
In the spirit of your own answer
my choice of the moment is without any doubt Alligator by The National. I would like to thank all those DiSers who convinced me to get this three days ago by: a) their insistence and b) their honesty about Boxer
Either...
"Meat Is Murder" or "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea".
New York Tendaberry by Laura Nyro
I could listen to Rated R all my life.
And not get bored.
Five Leaves Left
by Nick Drake. Anyone who doesn't like it is wrong.
Jesus Lizard
Goat.
yeah
nick drake is undderappreciated on here.
His new vinyl box set isn't.
Tacky cheap vinyl well packaged but poor quality. A real shame because his music would sound so much better on good quality vinyl.
in the aeroplane over the sea
even though i haven't listened to it for months and months, it's easily the one album that means the most to me.
First thing that came into my head
( )
Joni Mitchell - Blue
is my essential album. Brings back so many memories!
A Love Supreme
by John Coltrane
that album..
makes me sad for a couple of days every time I listen to it.
It's more of an occasional pleasure pleasure for me.
Rusty
by Rodan.
Interesting choice
Tooth Fairy Retribution manifesto FTW!!!11!
Rusty
by Rodan.
Talk Talk - Laughing Stock
You are a wise man
And I very much endorse your choice of essential album.
Sunset Rubdown
Shut Up I'm Dreaming
its got to be
love - forever changes, it works on many different levels and the lyrics are funny
I like you.
^ seconded for "Forever Changes"
or at least for today.
That one where
the Chipmunks sing the Beatles' songs...
for me.
Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights
The Holy Bible
Manic Street Preachers. How they wrote that and then produced albums later that got them labeled as a poor mans u2 makes my head spin.
I've never listened to anything thats provoked so many different emotions from me, From nihilistic to inspired. This ones been through the good times and the bad.
Low - I could live in hope
easy
Grace- Jeff Buckley
Rocket From The Crypt - Scream, Dracula, Scream!
I Heart You
And anyone who craves the RFTC
'Loveless'
or 'Songs For't Deaf'...
or maybe 'Dirty'
So many favourites
But only a few essentials.
Top of that shortlist would be;
Sparklehorse- Good Morning Spider
1992 The Love Album - Carter USM
Oh sure, it won't top any critics lists and people will pretend to hate it when they're around their rubbish scenester mates, but, it could just possibly be the best.thing.ever.
Fact or something.
bloc party- silent alarm
i'm going to get shit for this choice.
why?
it's a really good album....
First thing that popped into my head was
Interpol's Turn on The Bright Lights
I could not agree more.
This album changed the way I feel about music.
TOTBL
or Ok Computer.
I can't choose.
Arcade Fire
Funeral
Vespertine
everyone should be issued a copy at birth.
69 Love Songs innit
...
In Utero
Cinder - Dirty Three
It's got everything I need.
Just for the heck of it,
I'll say We Are The Romans by Botch, because it certainly owns pretty much everything ever recorded.
Illinois by Sufjan Stevens.
REM - Automatic For The People
Okay you've probably all heard it! But it is a really good album, its totally listenable you can properly listen to it or just have it drifting along in the background.
The Stone Roses...
... is the one I could never go without, but for this year? Beautiful Targets by Hopewell... an underrated classic of our time. Just beautiful :)
Julian Cope
Saint Julian
Radiohead - The Bends
Sigur Ros - Takk
Screamadelica - Primal Scream
Changed my life and musical outlook
More Specials - The Specials
An album of apocalyptic karaoke songs, Jerry Dammers' response to Thatcherite Britain, Terry Hall at his deadpan best.
oui (geddddddiiittt)
the walkmen / bows + arrows
onelinedrawing visitor
was the album that first sprung to mind when i read this so i'm going to say that.
The Gun Club's
Miami or Fire Of Love are what I'd haul off to a desert island. Not sure whether they'd be essential to most people but they are to me
Ooh
ooh tricky but - Barafundle by Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. A genre crossing, sprawling masterpiece.
Well...
...if I could only have one LP it would be 'Henry's Dream' by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.
I could happily listen once a day (and have done at times in the past) and still not tire of it.
Lyrically entertaining and musically tighter than a ducks arse. Nice one Nick!
