how good have they been on this tour then?
thinking about going tonight...
I've been reading Mono great, Jesu not so much. Which is annoying as i'm basically going this evening to see Jesu.
Infact I've never even heard an entire Mono album, so this'll be new to me.
haven't ever heard an entire jesu album, but the last time I saw Mono they were incredible so am really looking forward to tonight given the comments below.
Jesu didn't quite do it for me
played for ages and were absolutely bliding last night in bristol.
Jesu, were INCREDIBLY LOUD, and some songs were good, some where rather boring,
They've varied between being really good and atmospheric to being a bit flat and boring. Not sure how much that has to do with the venue they're playing in though. They'd probably sound quite epic in a cathedral.
I had to dash for the last bus to Bath at 11.40.
they finished maybe just after 12. i liked it how they had that big wig out in the middle, and everyone thought they were finishing, but they werent really! ha ha! they were great.
jesu were a bit flat, the bass was soooo loud it drowned out quite a lot of the guitar, which sounded good - when you could hear it.
I thought they were finishing with that massive wig out. And then ran to find a bus, which wasn't at the bus station where it said it would be, so I had to get a taxi anyway.
The bass drowned out what sounded pretty good when you could hear it, I've nothing against loudness but this was just bass drone. Mono were epic!
take some earplugs. I thought they were pretty powerful, but Mono owned the show, seriously. Amazing amazing amazing band.
They will be on very late though- last night they only came on at 10:45.
i just got some ER20s recently, so this will be my first gig trying them out :S
play anything new?
the Scala and the woman said: 'The headliner isn't usually on before 9 and the curfew's 11'. Thanks a lot!
Well, not a spare, my ticket if anyone wants it. £15 and Im in Kings Cross anyway.
pm me for my number.
at various points during mono i thought, gosh i love music! (also love my rarely-used earplugs :p) sound was good, the guitars amazing.
also, the most respectful london crowd i've seen. the place fell silent *before* the first note was played! (if only it's like that at more acoustic gigs)
very good tonight.
the sound was excellent, and yes, ppl were quiet which was good.
my heart stopped during yearning. it was amazing!!!
Jesu were great. Sound was really clear.
And i got to interview Taka! Winner!
I'll post a link here once its up.
They played one new song, and it was the sex.
i need to work out what one of the sublime song towards the end was.
in love with Mono. They were fucking BLINDING last night - best i've seen them! Yearning nearly brought tears to my eyes it was so fucking good! And the way they built up the sound in the middle of the set with that freak out and then just kept on going for another half hour or so (i ain't got a clue about times i was in la la land) was fucking tremendous!
I was snapping leaning on the monitors the whole time - blissfully loud so so so so good.... dear god i love that band - far more than i love my hearing evidently...
Jesu i enjoyed but wasn't blown away - will have to dedicate some time to the recordings.
Photos to come!
I forget the titles but recall the CRUNCH.
I LOVE 'Silver'.
i've only listened to that ep, so i don't know anything else they played, but a couple of the songs were great.
They certainly played these three:
We All Falter
Definitely heard that.
I'm so totally over bands that do what Mono do: Fender Twin clean tones with reverb and echo, pretty pattern, repeat, repeat, repeat, build, build, turn on distortion pedal 1, repeat, turn on distortion pedals 2 and 3, rock out for 10 minutes, pretty clean pattern to finish (as last big distorted chords fade away). Yawn.
OK, so they're very good at it, but it's just so tired now to my ears. If I'd never heard Explosions in the Sky or anything like it before I'd probably fucking love Mono. As it is they're very derivative, uninspired and completely fail to move me.
And it's definitely not "post rock". The label has become so bastardised. Mono is just instrumental guitar music, OK. Listen to late-era Talk Talk, Bark Psychosis, Tortoise, etc, for what post rock REALLY is.
I totally agree. I stayed to check out a few tracks but fucked off shortly after that.
Very generic - right down to the petite, attractive Japanese frontwoman.
They are obviously amazing instrumentalists but the formula is so repetitive and predictable that it loses all attraction for me.
we won't miss your arrogant snideness
our posts obviously mean we don't like any bands. Cunt.
I get bored of so many bands of this type, for exactly the reasons listed here.
But I love Mono.
Maybe they're louder (and quieter) than the others. Maybe their songs are prettier, or cleverer, or better-written. I'm not really sure. They just do everything right. All the other bands make me yawn, and Mono give me goosebumps.
they can't even come near Mono. Incredible, seriously brilliant.
you worthless piece of shit
before you disappeared. You've returned as much of an areshole. Please fuck off again
Well argued. You can shut up now and keep going to gigs that are boring, old man.
booooooooooo! hiss!!!!!! that is all.
mono are ace, end of.
lost an ear plug though.
couldnt hear in my left ear for about 3 days
