Tom Waits
I'm having the time of my life compiling a 'best of' for a friend. I'm gonna do it as succinctly as possible; 2 cd's - no more than 12 tracks on each. I want them to flow like a real album, despite being from many different ones. An all nighter, yes. Fun, also yes. Anyone else tried converting peeps?
yes.
It's very easy. He ingrains himself on your soul. If the following aren't on your list, then you need to start again.
Temptation
Big in Japan
Tango Til They're Sore
Alice
Bottom of the World
What's He Building In There?
Singapore
Goin Out West
Long Way Home
no martha
no i hope i dont fall in love with you??
bonkers
I reckon
Jockey full of bourbon
29 Dollars
Nobody
Blue Valentine
and Gun Street Girl
should all get in there.
I hope I don't Fall in Love With You
Is actually one of his weaker songs, I've always thought.
But it's really easy to like
straight away... which would be a good thing if you're trying to convert someone.
Haha!
I have some 'essentials' you folks don't, and you have some I don't. This is what makes a great artist, and be assured it's an 'introduction to'...my friend is the sort who will hunt down every last trace once I have him hooked!
Seriously though, the best Christmas present ever?
hes on my list of people i love as much as my dad
along with morrissey and elliott smith
Imagine if Waits was your dad
You'd turn out as the best that humanity could offer...except for Tom, obv.
I think orphans is the closest youll get
to having an accurate representation of his whole career.
i think as a rarities compilation
it does work well as an introduction
a compilation of it perhaps.
I wouldn't just give it to someone in its 90-odd song entirety. Rain Dogs works best as an introduction album.
im not disagreeing, well i am,
kinda i suppose, but I would give them Bone Machine over Rain dogs.
I mean in terms of song "types"
It has slushy romantic ones, weird rhythmic ones, bluesy ones etc
I've listened more
to orpahns than real gone, not that real gone isn't good. I just think Orphans is superb, especially as my favourite song changes daily.
can someone do a YSI best of
ten tracks?
cos im totally not into him in any way, and very open to being so
I WILL!
I probably have about 10 minutes to do it as I start work at 2, but here goes...
Got a few tracks off emusic last night
from these recommendations. S'good stuff, I'd only heard What's He Building In There? before.
^ This stopped me from finding him
for ages. But he has literally so much quality that you could just start any where and not 'ge it wrong'. As evidenced by everyone mentioning different things.
Ok, I did it
I made a wee 10 track compilation. It was very very rushed but ive done it anyway. PM me if you want it.
