Stars of the Lid vs. Efterklang vs. The New Pornographers vs. Dirty Projectors
decide for me please?
but go to see TNP.
if that helps?
i'm largely incredulous as to the extent of their suckage, and i could do with someone trying to justify them to me.
Well, I only have their most recent album, but its very good. They play around with the form and structure, not just of songs but like with the construction of their guitar parts and stuff. The entire album appears to have been assembled from the memories their lead guy has of what 'Damaged' by Black Flag was about, Pierre Menard author of the Quixote-style (only it sounds nothing like 'Damaged', obviously), which is a very interesting statement in my opinion, as well as fitting the chopped-up style of their guitar parts/call-and-response vocals incredibly well. I saw them supporting Battles and they were brilliant- I would say they are better live than on record- on record they are admittedly quite hard to get into but live even people I spoke to who were not familiar with them all seemed to be really impressed.
the only full record i've heard is Rise Above and i just think it's monumentally lazy to use Damaged (or any record really) rather than writing something for themselves: as it is, using a confrontational hardcore record for that style of music just makes it sound like he's making fun of it. it sounds like an obnoxiously smug joke to me. i think he's lying about doing it from memory, because it's pretty fucking difficult to even understand all the vocals on Damaged, let alone remember them 10 years on. And I didn't find the record all that musically varied, but then I couldn't get past how fucking annoying I find the singing.
about the memory aspect. just seems like he thought it'd be fun to write a new album with the lyrics
interesting stuff. dont think its taking the piss out of the hxc
but i don't think it'd sound any different if it was, y'know? it's not that far removed from a comedy cover version.
I love the singing. And I don't think that he is making fun of hardcore punk- its just a perfect record to use for this because, its kind of the type of thing that everyone who is into his type of music will probably have at one time heard and it will have made an effect on them, but probably do not listen to anymore (I know thats how I feel about 'Damaged'). And I don't think he's lying about doing it from memory, because if I remember the lyrics rightly, then he isn't actually taking them verbatim, a lot of the time he just takes the most striking lines.
for sure. It's unlikely you're going to see them again.
I've got a clash as well.
Efterklang Vs. Akron Family.
I reckon im gonna go with Efterklang.
for the same reason - 6 years since they last toured.
Haven't heard SOTL or Dirty Projectors, will do now.
Plus, I don't really like the latest New Pornographers album.
New Pornos are a bit boring.
I'm a bit afraid of how might be Stars of the Lid live...
Efterklang a very good live, so it's the obvious choice !
i think i'm going to take the one chance i've got to see SotL
I like the sound of the Dirty Projectors, but I haven't heard their stuff.
The New Pornographers are a bit like wandering in to a particular jaunty school staff room at lunch time.
Stars of the Lid 3
Efterklang 5 (inc. lyle)
The New Pornographers 3
Dirty Projectors 1
far from conclusive...
