who in your opinion is the best punk band?
My money would be with the Clash or Dead Kennedys.
nobody respects my music taste :(
I love the Thermals.
Pink Flag is the best album 1977 produced, hands-down (eat it, Low fans), and is easily the most complete 'punk' album from the original wave and then before the 70s was even up they managed to tear the genre up completely with their next two albums.
Maybe they are kind of a post-punk band though... less so than like Gang of Four or Public Image Ltd, though, so I'm going to stick with Wire.
but if we're allowed hardcore
or Throbbing Gristle. Everyone is so quick to lump TG into the industrial pigeonhole, but I've always considered them a punk band.
Ha ha, get me.
you tube about Punk-he said the Sex Pistols were a devised act like Take That or Boyzone and The Clash signed to a majo label then moaned about them being Capitalists.
I think the Damned were the best of Punk here, what with them jumping tall buildings just to shit in a strangers bed and minutemen best of Yank post punk.
That Punk attitude documentary by don letts is ace.
I was reading about The Sex Pistols/John Lydon in 'Rip It Up And Start Again' by Simon Reynolds. He called the Sex Pistols 'the last rock n roll band' and PIL 'the first punk band'. Interesting point of view, seeing as PIL ended their career doing Sex Pistols songs.
fall out boy
Ok, maybe not strictly a punk band per se...... but no one has stuck to their principles and made such consistently interesting music like MES........ and also been so consistently obnoxious and contrary! In a good way of course!
pervades their music, so I think they're a fair candidate.
X are always underrated in this category. They started off doing the punk thing as well as anyone, but then end up branching out and doing things with timpani and saxophone, adding blues and country-ish elements to their music, and all the while having better lyrics than anyone else around.
But, the actual answer to this question is the Ramones. Even the Clash never managed to produce 5 perfect albums in a row. After that things started to tail off a little admittedly...
but i think the clash extended the punk genre far far better than the ramones, as did DK.
what the hell does this mean?
I don't think Wire or Buzzcocks to be punk band.
I completely forgot! One of my favourite punk bands of all time.
my heart aches...
They dressed pretty punk...
has anyone heard theyre song "lets burn"
what a tune!
richard hell and the voidoids had the look but crass get it for being the real deal DIY punk ethos band and not a mohawk in sight.
the clashs first album is one of my favourite albums. Obviously i like London Calling and the less punky stuff, but in terms of out and out punk albums the Clash S/t is pretty darn good
is pretty punky, and its interesting to see the progression from the first, to that, then to london calling and from that to combat rock, with all the different influences such as ska overtaking the pure punk. I dont listen to anything after combat rock, although i do like that album.
Fuck the Ramones - seriously.
but if you mean 77 UK punk then it is definitely the Buzzcocks. The Sex Pistols still sound great too.
Overall if you are talking punk ethos or something then Fugazi.
thats like saying busted are the best heavy metal act
sex pistols and the clash had nowt to do with punk.
I have no idea what he is on about either
theyre a hardcore band dude.
are we saying "the best at being punk" or "the best music made by a band identified as a punk band"
the Sex Pistols don't count either, I think it's a last man standing situation. Eater FTW?
in the wider context they are, but then so are sonic youth and nirvana
classifying punk is such an un-punk thing to do.
but just sonically, black flags early stuff really doesnt sound very different to The Damned or whatever.
its wierd how bands dont seem to able to stay punk for long..not really. i guess if you play a guitar everyday then you get better and become devo or something.
people cant stay punks for ever either. they get fat and middle aged and get proper jobs. they lose their edge.
so age and fatness have nothing to do with it per se.
i thoought punk was a genre
static age by the misfits must be the best punk album..hybrid moment and last caress are amazing songs.
I always thought punk was more about doing stuff yourself and not caring about selling records or whatever. I'd say Fugazi because they're an amazing band but stuck true to all the punk principles.
There's gonnna be a Borstal breakowwwwt!
The Ramones or The Clash
and for hardcore punk...
Pink Flag, Chairs Missing & 154. So much ideas crammed into 3 albums.
Post Punk = Wire or Pere Ubu.
