I like Faure and Dvorak etc but I want some really moody stuff!
Metamorphosen. It's great! My friend lent it to me because I complained that a lot of classical music is spoilt by being really dark at first, then going into a major section and getting all cheery. This doesn't!
but Rachel's - Systems/layers album perfectly fits your description
- Sibelius' finest
Concerto for prepared piano and orchestra (I think that's what it's called) is superb, especially the Silentium movement. The Sunken Cathedral is also awesome.
is crushingly wonderful.
Shostakovich 10 is also a good bet for the "terrifying" end of dark and gloomy.
- songs on the death of children, heart breakingly sad
Symphony No 3. It'll break your heart.
Are probably too dark and gloomy but as that's what you asked for, get them. I've personally never heard anything darker and gloomier in my life.
and ordered some Arvo Part, i'd heard good things about him before.
Well math, well good too.
