Best songs of the year
Seeing as we have had so much fun prematurely discussing/in the case of Tristan and Henry arguing rabidly about the best albums of the year, it got me thinking about the best individual songs of the year.
So, anyway. There's the obvious ones:
- Take Pills (Panda Bear)
- Fireworks (Animal Collective)
- I'm Not Going To Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You (Black Kids)
- Paper Planes (MIA)
- The Past Is A Grotesque Animal (Of Montreal)
- Someone Great (LCD Soundsystem)
A few slightly less blinding obvious ones:
- Colleen (Joanna Newsom)
- Flourescent Grey (Deerhunter)
- Heatherwood (again Deerhunter)
- The Taming Of The Hands That Came Back To Life (Sunset Rubdown)
And then finally some more obscure ones to make me look cool:
- I Always Say Yes (Glass Candy)
- Nicoman (Gang Gang Dance)
- Paul Newman's Great Horse Maneuver (Dead Dead Dead)
Personally, I think it's between 'I Always Say Yes', 'Colleen', 'Take Pills' and 'Heatherwood' for the number one spot.
Thoughts?

with you
on both MIA and of montreal. she's a rejector is fucking brilliant.
You were doing so well
...and then you included MIA.
Just... just NO.
I feel embarrassed for everyone involved whenever I hear that ridiculous 'song'. Kala is this year's 'Emporer's New Clothes' album. All the hype, fuck all substance.
Oh I beg to differ
OK so when Pitchfork described her as having "the biggest case of sufferer's envy since Joe Strummer" it was quite possibly the most accurate thing they've ever said but she's in that fine tradition of great female pop mavericks stretching back through Bjork and Kate Bush.
Arular was ok.
Just ok. Frankly, her Piracy Funds Terrorism mixtape was more essential in almost every way. Kala's one defining moment is thanks to Grime-joke Afrikan Boy. She's not really maverick so much as well connected, and comparing her to either Bush or Bjork is a deep insult to the talent of those artists. Even though I was deeply disappointed by the Icelandic one's output this year...
But hey, one man's opinion is another man's onion. Without a p and another i, of course.
Speaking of Afrikan Boy
'One Day I Went To Lidl'- best novelty song of the year?
I can't walk past a Lidl now without humming it.
I go into Lidl
humming it. God bless iPods and 'Inappropriate' playlists.
Its like
if they gave Dizzee Rascal Wesley Willis' brain.
Novelty song?
Whatevs.
-
One of my friends got caught shoplifting in Asda and we always sing that to her, its' genius.
Novelty song or not
it does rule
(and is also easily the most discussed on this thread, thus making it in many ways the winner).
If i could be bothered to make a list
it'd be up there.

Like a mutant version of Xmas?
Aw thanks.
Akron/Family - Ed is a Portal
Or Umbrella.
I reckon
Sumerian - Tired Irie
Balloons - Foals
At the moment, I'm addicted to those.
Balloons
was not on my list, largely due to the fact the new version was posted on their myspace the same day. Which maybe shows up this list's prematureness, but still...
Totally rules.
There's something
about the new version that makes it seem... chubby. I don't know, but it's not as sharp or exciting as the demo. Don't get me wrong, it's still fantastic, but it just lacks that sharpness for me :)
Best songs of the year

Avril Lavigne - When you're gone
Linkin Park - What I've done
