Did anyone else just get the news that Toby is leaving at the end of tour? So shit :(
now i feel REALLY bad for missing them last wednesday.
i hate that i knew it was coming, i didn't know there had been announcement
that's my band's van! what's happened?!?
its the trouble that lead to them borrowing your van
she's my baby.
but didn't want to say anything, or indeed, know if it was totally true.
Oli just sent a message round from the MMISL Facebook group stating 'good news and bad news', the bad news being that Toby is leaving after the tour, but they will be seeking a replacement. I don't remember what the good news was.
just seen it. It sucks.
NEWS NEWS NEWS!!!!!
The Tour Continues!
Hi folks. Its been ages since i've been online! This'll be the first update since the tour started and there's a merde ton of news. Some good some bad.
The An Emergency tour went swimmingly! we were looked after by many many lovely people and played some great shows. They're such an amazing band as well. Truly inspiring! So thanks to those guys for being ace and all that and to everyone that stopped by and nodded their heads.
Massive apologies to anyone that expected to see us in Manchester or Birmingham. Unfortunately paul became rather ill and we were stranded in Salford for a little while unable to get anywhere. We're hoping he'll be rested by tomorrow and we can rejoin the tour in Portsmouth! Also please note that the London date is being held at the ISLINGTON ACADEMY which should be loads of fun!
Some rather sad news now. Toby unfortunately has decided to leave the band. It came as a bit of a shock to all of us. The shows on this tour will be the last that he will be performing with us. This does NOT mean the end of St Louis. Far from it. We intend to get a new vocalist as quickly as possible and carry on the way we were.
That's the lot.
i wonder if they'll continue playing songs from the album with a new vocalist? that would be weird...
I didn't realise this was public knowledge yet
It's true though. Been sitting on this news for about 10 days now which hasn't been easy as I know so many people would want to see them on this tour, before Toby leaves. At least you know now. The Islington Academy in London on the 12th (and indeed the Xfm session the next day) will be the final things Toby will do with the band, which is a great shame
However, before any rumours start, and to reitterate what Oli said above, the band are DEFINITELY carrying on. They've already been looking for a new singer and will be playing their forthcoming shows (not including the HIFH dates) instumentally, something which they've done on the odd occasion before and worked really well
they wont be doing the HIFH tour, or that they'll have a new singer by then?
hes a very good singer, but not completely unique or anything, so im not too negative about them replacing him
when their singer quits? good on them for keeping it going - it's dedication - must be pretty weird though.
Are these the same songs that usually have vocals, just being played without vocals?
I'd be quite interested to see them as an instrumental band, actually.
Hopefully they'll find a Pattonesque second singer.
they missed the last couple of shows cos Paul was ill but hopefully he'll be feeling better in time to carry on tomorrow
In the past they've played the same set instrumentally. It works as the songs are complex and the band are energetic enough, but it won't be a long-term solution
Get yourselevs down to the London show for one final sing-along with Toby!
Yep, come and sing-along with two different Toby's, maybe more. Who knows!
I thought the vocalist was kind of a weak link. Although it may have been a bad night or something.
He's great. His dancing and beard are also great.
I shall miss his dancing and his tattoo the most.
gets split up a bit, but iiiiiiii do think their vocals and lyrics are jarringly less good than the music, personally. Good luck to the lad, but draft in someone with a bit more grit vocally and something to say :D
i dunno who HIFH are though...hope they're good.
will be good to see MMISL with this set up for the last time though.
i don't know what their music is like though.
They used to be great around the time of the first and second album, haven't heard them since. If you like MMISL you'll like HIFH though, don't worry.
i wouldnt agree. theyre a pop rock band. lots of people into mmisl would be liking it from a technical fucked up underground angle, rather than an adolescent jumping around angle
album through the door.
was i runner up in that comp a while back? i think so! cashback.
i haven't won owt in years.
shame about toby, i heard this on the grapevine a while back.
let's hope both toby and the boys come out on top and don't do a secondsmile.
'do a secondsmile'?
But what joe_riot said underneath this, Secondsmile haven't been as good since they lost their original vocalist.
then carry on (not as good)
Wow, wasnt really expecting this.
I'm syre they'll find somebody equally as good.
And good luck to Toby.
they all worked really hard and made alot of sacrifices they seemed like they were on the brink of biger things and losing a singer is such a set back
This is bad news. He was brilliant.
They are such a good band. Toby has lots of charisma. He also writes great lyrics, and has the ability to somehow sing a really memorable hook over mad jazz skronk loon hardcore. IMHO he holds the whole thing together. I'll be sad if he leaves.
''an explantation for the departure, to who ever wants one.
i haven't really felt it, not for a while now.
i didn't like the feeling of being a focal point for something that didn't represent me at all.
i want to make things only for the sake creativity, that have nothing to do with sales figures.
i don't want to take part in the competition for technical music.
i swear down i am totally grateful for the times i had, the people i met and the opportunities i was given. but when craving something with so much more soul, success doesn't matter.
life is massive. much bigger than i thought.
and it is also very short.
i have big plans. musically, artistically and geographically.
i am a road warrior.
i wish them all the fortune in the world (i hope the curse gets lifted boys, we had ourselves a time, right?) it was well documented, so when we are old, we can look at the evidence, and remember.
heres to the japes and capers.''
Having just read this blog from Toby's page I would like to point out that, we write technical music because it interestes us, we do not feel that we are in some kind of competition to be technical we are just interested in that kind of playing on a creaive level, also we are not obssessed with sales figure's or we would not be playing music this technical, you would think being sat in the sat practice space for three years and sharing the same discussions would have got this across. but we do want to make a success (on whatever level out of our band we are pround of it and we love it).
I personally agree with alexxk I harbour no ill feelings toward Toby but at the same time I hold no posotive ones either.
this seems like a good place to say that when i posted that 'explanation', i was not in any way talking about the band.
i had begun to really hate how souless and competitive the industry (from what i saw of it) seemed. thats all. in my opinion, meet me in st. louis work hard at filling their hours with what they really want to be doing. and there is nothing more positive and genuine than that.
i wish them all the success they want, heck me sideways, they deserve it.
