Sin City. Watched it the other night, and it's incredible, up there with Pulp Fiction.
Napoleon Dynamite's great too, one of those films that you can watch any single scene from on it's own and it makes you laugh.
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. Bill Murray. Enough said really.
rather than say willard twice maybe you should have said 'ben'
even if only for the understanding of the meaning of the song :D

Just ethan hawk being iritating and smug.
Some beautiful scenery though
Re: Tell me some must-see, "cult" films
Still find ethan hawk really iritating though, particularly the whole smug/wacky thing that he does in before sunrise in particular.

Re: Tell me some must-see, "cult" films
Bit more than that :P
Having read the Akira books, the film is slightly problematic for me, because it doesn't really compare - the manga goes so much further with the storyline, and its probably the most compulsive thing I've ever read. I was working nightshifts at a call centre when I was reading it, and I'd go to work, read a volume, and then order the next one online while at work... :D
Still, technically a beautiful film, and damn fun to watch as well. It's so atmospheric, full of little background details - a perfect vision of a society teetering on a knife edge between salvation and complete and utter destruction.
With motorbikes.
Re: Tell me some must-see, "cult" films
Re: Tell me some must-see, "cult" films
The manga is a bit of an investment [6 300-ish page books, about £20/volume] but WELL worth it imho.
Re: Tell me some must-see, "cult" films
i have tried reading manga, but i lose track of everything because i forget and started reading the pages back to front, which is utterly confusing!

This is probably my favourite piece of... anything. ever. bought all the videos when I was 16, fell in love with it.
Picked up the first two of the new "platinum" collection DVDs last week, lovely stuff.
Have seen seen the The End Of Evangelion movie? The end of the world never made so much sense to me..

YAY
Re: Tell me some must-see, "cult" films
Anyway, you can get it in a 2-movie boxset with Death & Rebirth, which if you don't know is a kind-of arty 'recap' movie, and its about £25 which isn't too bad.
Watching them all in one day.. I did that once. I think it cause a brain meltdown :D

i will manage the all in one day thing at one point this week. i just managed to stay awake to watch eight hours of lord of the rings.

Best psychological horror ever = the original vanishing.
Eraserhead: 'subtle' background white noise. You think? It's the first thing I notice, and am aware of it throughout the film. This is A GOOD THING!

Re: Tell me some must-see, "cult" films
John Water's films, especially early 'blue' films - funniest movie scene ever is when Divine, a 400lb transvestite playing the role of a 16 yr old girl, throws her parents into the Christmas tree cos she didn't get the fuck-me pumps she wanted.
Drugstore Cowboy - Matt Dillion and friends are desperate for drugs. And why not?
Pope of Greenwich Village - Some of the best NYC banter you're ever gonna hear.
Party Girl - Parker Posey. Nuff said.

Re: Tell me some must-see, "cult" films
To whoever slagged off donnie darko by saying it was like a bad douglas coupland book i don't think dc has done a bad book (although all of them have their dodgy moments and some are harder to read than others) therefore i love donnie darko. Anyone who likes DD should watch garden state if you haven't already.
Spirited Away - yes
Original Dark Water - yes but very unpleasant
Watership Down (ok i know it's probably crap and not at all cult)
Any David Lynch
Fargo, can't watch it without cringing.
I might print this list out and start watching all the ones I haven't yet seen given i agree with the rest of them.

Re: Tell me some must-see, "cult" films
Has anyone said "JFK" yet? As long as you're willing to disregard it as a historical document it's a masterly piece of filmmaking.
Also "12 Angry Men"... not really cult, but still a low-budget wonder that never gets the critical recognition it deserves.
Re: Tell me some must-see, "cult" films
The Edukators
Dancer In The Dark

Lilya 4-eva
All About Lily Chou Chou (Everybody will adore this film, seriously go check it out, it's a cult bloody masterpiece)

Re: Tell me some must-see, "cult" films
Wow, over 100 posts. I must be popular now. Can I have a DiS gold star?
Re: Tell me some must-see, "cult" films
My mistake. Was Road Warrior (Mad Max 2) which was a stream of terrific mindless violence. The best of the 3 by far.
Pink Flamingos is actually one of the John Waters films I was talking about. Though usually I could give a fuck about ratings, some of you younger DiSers might wanna wait a year or two before corrupting yer moldy minds.
Did anyone already say High Fidelity? For us DiSers, Rob, is sorta a cult hero, eh? Besides, it's Jack Black at his best. How many of us laughed hysterically when he tossed the Britney Spears buyer outta the store or started fighting with that one customer? Fucking ace, that was.
Here are a couple others, too.
Diva. The french subtitles version is best.
Edie - Ciao Manhatten. You should all know your rock 'n roll history. Edie Sedgwick was the world's most famous groupie.
Erotica. There's a Catholic schoolgirl scene worth the price of admission (kinda boring otherwise).
Last Tango in Paris. See it to see it. Marlon Brando in a soft core film. G/F: "Butter? What's he gonna do, make a sandwich?" Me: "I don't think so, babe."
Man Who Fell To Earth. David Bowie as a space invader. Freak fest. Get the uncut version to see the man "well hung with snow white tan."
What's the average age here? These are not family films kids!
Re: Tell me some must-see, "cult" films
strange days! good film. not a great, brain-melting, barrier-smashing film, but A Good Film. juliette lewis is great, ralph fiennes is sleazy, pathetic and actually interesting [as opposed to when he's doing his Ac-Torrr thing] and.... yes. it is good.
dead man is also great. weird and dreamlike and somnambulist [i love that word] and creepy. and iggy pop is in it. it just gets no better than that.

Re: Tell me some must-see, "cult" films
Re: Tell me some must-see, "cult" films
ooh it really singes the nostrils
Re: Tell me some must-see, "cult" films
Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid - The funniest film ever... Steve Martin cut into loads of old film noirs. "Laugh, or I'll blow your lips off"
Darkman - OK, everyone pans this film but I love it. It's Sam Raimi's missing link between Evil Dead and Spider-man. And stop thinking of the awful Darkman TV movies... I mean the Liam Neeson one. Class.
The Princess Bride - Just good
Invasion of the Body Snatchers - The 70s version with Donald Sutherland and Jeff Goldblum. Scary as hell.
Oh, and to save you a couple of hours, don't bother with The Life Aquatic, it's actually shit. Any one who tells you differently is just trying to be "arthouse cool".

Never want to sit through that rape scene ever again but the film itself is a brutal fascinating movie

I don't think I've seen Marathon Man added. Someone on DiS recommended not watching it to a user who was having teeth troubles. I found out why but I think it's a brilliant, thrilling, tense film.

Like, a lesser known English language film, rather than world cinema or something?
Whoever mentioned Theatre of Blood- great choice!
Not technically a film was a BBC Play For Today
but Nuts In May as one of the funniest 'films' I've seen and I suppose could be described as 'cult', along with Life Is Sweet which is also great.
