I've got 'Appetite for Destruction' on, which for a debut is pretty good.
So best debut album you've ever heard?
dunno if its the best ive ever heard, but its the first that springs to mind
Piper at the gates of dawn
and then definitely maybe or qotsa.
I suspect that for more than fifty percent of bands, their first album is the best thing that they will ever do - if only because of the high number of them who fall by the wayside after a couple of years.
I'll say 'The Scream' by Siouxsie + The Banshees or 'Unknown Pleasures' by Joy Division. Neither record has dated a day.
I'd say that.
Followed closely by the Velvets first record
Roxy Music - Roxy Music
Magazine - Real Life
Fugazi - Fugazi
what? Go fuck yourselves, its awesome.
i said so and everything
yeah, but does it really pwn the first guns and roses album? That takes some beating ;)
it hasn't got Slash on it, so probably not.
or bands with short careers ( 2 albums max )...
I would nominate :
Siouxsie - the scream
Marion - this world and body
Catchers - mute
Delgados - domestiques
Joy Division - unknown pleasure
Mansun - attack of he grey lantern
for the first time in ages..
Call Of The Weasal Clan by Lightyear :)
The Stone Roses
The Blue Album
In one - a portable vaccum!
In two - a minibar!
In three - a holiday weekend!
In four - a jaguar!
In five - a sodastream machine!
In six - a beatamax!
In seven - a rota-shaver, once you try you'll never go back!
I love Lightyear and that album.
Or maybe The Jesus and Mary Chain's "Psychocandy".
Or maybe Ramones. Hmmm...
bjork - debut
j buckley - grace
can't think of anymore right now
i'll be back...
The Stone Roses
Band Of Horses - Everything All The Time
Arcade Fire - Funeral
dEUS - Worst Case Scenario
Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy
Counting Crows - August and Everything After
Six By Seven - The Things We Make
Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes
She went all mental and made nothing of any real worth since, but it's a great debut album! Really!
Still, I think I'll be buying Everything All the Time off your list. I've been meaning to get that for ages!
I think it's a bit wishy-washy. Soz!
(good call on Tori Amos though. I love that woman).
Like you know anything about SubPop
Don't come round here with your indie speak, foo'.
Band Of Horses album: not even in the best ten debuts on Sub Pop. MY OPINION.
Copacetic by Velocity Girl
Love Tara by Eric's Trip
Dreamcake by Jale
Apologies To The Queen Mary by Wolf Parade
Pleasure Forever by Pleasure Forever
Everything All The Time is better than Bleach.
I know the only person who might agree with me on this is Theo, but Bleach is fucking brilliant.
band of horses. it is true.
that Tad is actually pretty shit...
Even if that's true, it's hurtful.
but weed party is amazing!
thats not the first tori amos album.
Biffy Clyro - Blackened Sky
Godspeed - F#A# Infinity
Hella - Hold your horse is
they're probably shit though
it's all about album number 4
And The Verve.
Turn on the Bright Lights
Are You Experienced
Up The Bracket
There are LOADS.
this is where our music taste diverges :)
It was starting to worry me!
The Libertines are fucking shit though! Really!
Out-Hud - S.T.R.E.E.T Dad,
MF DOOM - Operation: Doomsday,
Holy Fuck - Holy Fuck (not LP),
and then the obvious ones like Piper At The Gates of Dawn, Marquee Moon, etc
Glassjaw - Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Silence
Weezer - Blue Album
The Bled - Pass The Flask
All AMAZING debuts.
Them lot made a cracking debut album!
Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine
David Thomas Broughton - Complete Guide to Insuffiency
The Blue Album - Weezer
Dry - PJ Harvey
Slanted and Enchanted - Pavement
Grace - Jeff Buckley
The eighties matchbox b-line disaster-horse of the dog

then Million Dead - A Song To Ruin
Dummy - Portishead
Blue - Weezer
Hour of Bewilderbeast - Badly Drawn Boy
Monolith - Twin Zero
i don't think i'm even joking. i think i wish i was.
most under-rated album ever?
Storm in Heaven-
come on now- the guitar swirls alone wiped everyone of their feet-
Also, Led Zeppelin One was quite decent too- let's focus on debuts by bands that had careers and few more good records-
