james_delve [Edit] [Delete] 24 replies 18:27, 5 May '05
it seems fairly common for people to be celebrating 1000 posts these days, but since its taken me soooo long (nearly a year and a half) i felt as though it was necessary

so....

What has been your favourite year for music?? and why??

im not sure what mine is yet, maybe 1994? or maybe 2004?

i'll tell you later...

    ive decided upon 1994:

    Jeff Buckley - Grace
    Portishead - Dummy
    Weezer - Blue
Drive Like Jehu - Yank Crime
    Soundgarden - Superunknown
    Pavement - Crooked Rain
Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley
    Blur - Parklife
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Orange
Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible
Sunny Day Real Estate - Diary
    Black Flag - Last Show
Stone Roses - The Second Coming
    Dream Theater - Awake
Fu Manchu - No one rides for free
    Kylie Minogue - Kylie Minogue
    REM - Monster
    Therapy? - Troublegum
    Stone Temple Pilots - Purple

plus its the year that Kurt Cobain killed himself.

    YARRRRRRRRR!

REM's Monster was horrible. What's the Frequency Kenneth? Awful. They keep having to lower the price of this at the 2nd hand shop (it's not on my replacement disc list). Soundgarden I dunt get. But otherwise you've listed some good ones. Pavement, of course. Blur. You missed Starlite Walker by Silver Joos. (BTW, I bought American Water and it's not as good. Good, but not as.)

Gotta be either the last twelve months, cos there've been a frightfully ton of great stuff here recently. Or maybe 2001 era when Interpol, BSP, Libs, Strokes, CTC, BRMC were putting out marvelous debuts; plus Dandy's 13 Tales, White Stripes one before Elephant - and so on revitalized the whole alternative scene. Yes, I vote for this period. But the music scene has never been brighter than it is today. I predict people will look back on the first half of this decade in awe of the music coming out now.

          1966

          Pet Sounds- Beach Boys
          Revolution- Q65
          Hitch-Hiker- Bobby and Laurie
          Boom -The sonics
La de Da's- La de Da's
          Rock Sects in- Downliners Sect
Gene Clark and the Gosdin Brothers- Gene Clark
          Extra Extra-Tages
          Save My Soul- Wimple Winch.....

the list could go on, but basically for me it's the point where pop music got as frantic and exciting as it ever would, just before things went a bit flowery and lame.

          • Re: Best Year For Music

I shouldn't really forget the singles released in '66, too

'she's got eyes that tell lies'- him and the others
            'glendora'-Downliners Sect
'You're holding me down'- The Buzz
            'my friend jack'- The Smoke
'I'll keep on holding on'- The Action
'Promise her anything'- Johnny Thompson Quintet
            'good vibrations'- Beach Boys

shit, my memory always fails when I try to come up with lists like this, but there's a shitload of great stuff from that year, honestly....the year of the pounding drums and the screaming vocalists

          beggars banquet
          astral weeks
          forever changes
          notorious byrd brothers
          dusty in memphis
          songs of leonard cohen
          happy sad
          electric ladyland
          saucerful of secrets
          silver apples
          music from big pink
          strictly personal
          wheels of fire
          waiting for the sun
          gris gris
          village green preservation society
          lumpy gravy

          what. a. year.

              Gotta be 1967 doesn't it?

              In recent years... easily 2002.

All I know is that 1664 wasn't a good year for music.

                      2002/2001 were good.

                      Strokes
                      White Stripes best album
                      Vines
                      Interpol
                      Coldplay
                      Libertines

But I also think last year was great for new bands (franz ferdinand, killers, kasabian, razorlight). Not to mention the Libs bril second album.
